Is it simply just too difficult for Phil to give praise?

Does anyone know how the post-game interviews went with Phil after Michael would just light it up?

Last night, Phil could not even bring himself to say that Kobe had a great fourth quarter...or anything really praiseworthy in general.

Has he always been this kind of schmuck? How hard is it to just simply say what is evident on the court....that Kobe just dominates?

Phil has not praised Kobe..he has not even defended Kobe...when he used to (bleep) about Shaq getting hammered all the time...well, Kobe's been hammered a lot, and NO word from Phil about it. What a schmuck.

You know...basketball is a sport....and even at the professional level it seems it should be fun...it would be nice to have a coach not so full of himself.

yada yada yada with his rings bit!

Phil's done plenty of praising about Kobe. It's just Kobe has been having fantastic games on a regular basis that Phil doesn't even bother mentioning it.

That's my take on it.

Agreed, I've heard Phil give Kobe his props this year on plenty of occasions. IE 62 point game, 81 point game, Christmas day game........

no doubt he has difficulty giving praise....he admits in his book that its difficult for him.

i understand where phil's coming from. if there's anyone who probably doesn't need anymore praise...its kobe bryant. kobe's the ish..and everyon'e been telling him that since he was a kid.

phil's attitude is that kobe's a superstar basketball player. lifting up and carrying his weak team in the 4th is his JOB. its what he's SUPPOSED TO DO.

however, i think some praise for doing your job WELL couldn't hurt.

I think Phil is hard on Kobe because Kobe still needs improve his shot selection and distributing to the open man(trusting his teamates). Maybe he thinks that if he praises Kobe, Kobe will diminish the criticism.

I have heard Phil mention how Kobe is hacked, but his tone was somehwnat calm and the same as the one he used when discussing the weaknesses of this team. He is not an animated guy.

I have heard Phil praise Kobe, but again the same subdued tone.

This may be interpreted as not really caring. I'm not sure if he cares or not.

Phil is also a big team guy, and values team success over indivicual success. The culture of this generation of basketball players, where they want to celebrate individual achievements and ignore team achievements, defenitely rubs him the wrong way.

Kobe and Phil have a job to do, which is to get this team to the playoffs and neither needs a pat on the back to understand that. Phil depends on Kobe to do exactly what he has been doing. Phil and Kobe are in an aggressive mindset right know and expect this team to turn the corner and settle in to there roles which have been defined. Kobe's role finisher why should he need praise for doing his job, Lamar's role be aggressive attack more and be the second best player for this team, Kwame defense rebounding and set solid picks, Smush defense limiting mistakes and take the offensive opportunities when they are there. Forget praise give us the results and get the job done, make the playoffs then Phil can praise Kobe on a MVP type season which Phil said he would put Kobe in position for when he took the job because he believed Kobe was still one of the best players in the game and took some undeserved knocks last year.

This isn't about Kobe NEEDING praise.

It's about me having a hard time grasping all things Phil.

Of course, I am a Lakers fan that occasionally posts here....so that and $3.25 will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

So why create this thread? you do know that Phil never gives any praise to any player he even did that to Jordan if you don't know yet...

I wanted to know if anyone knew whether Phil went absolutely nuts with praise over MJ....that's all.

Phil never gets nuts, he's not Rudy T or Ronny... Phil never gets excited when a player makes a clutch shot.

oh...I guess having a front row seat to two of the best hoops stars in NBA history does get kinda dull. Hard to even throw those guys a bone.

I don't think it's a Kobe/Phil thing. It's just Phil. I saw the post game interview and was amazed at how sedate he was when asked about Lamar's fantastic game. I was expecting a little more enthusiasm. It does appear as though Phil has trouble giving praise, but that's just the way Phil is.

I think that's good though.

We need a head coach that isn't intimidated by Kobe Bryant. If you look at things, Phil doesn't really praise anyone much.

To him it's like. Big (bleep) whoop. You guys had a great game. Now come to me when you can actually get me that 10th ring. Then I'll be praising you.

A guy that's seen as much as Phil has doesn't let one game rattle him. Be it in a positive or negative way.

Yep. Hang out with a few Buhhdists and you'll think you're in a room full of Phils. He keeps everything on an even keel....

It just may be his style. Kobe will perform come hell or high water, I'm not worried about him. It's the other player that may require it, at the right time.
Fans tend to think of athletes as super human inside and out, but this is may not the case. There are some very sensitive players in the nba, and we as fans don't find these things out from the media. We get sound bits of information about players, and before you know it, a player is labeled as an a$$hole.
Unfortunately we have a hands off type of coach with a very young team.
