Last night, when I was watching the game on K-CAL and I'm sure many of you saw, they had one of those TV poll's about whether they should retire Byron Scott's jersey or not and 75% of the Laker fans said "Yes".

So I thought I'd post it on here and see what you all think. Of course, I'm VERY biased (see my avatar), but the realistic part of me feels that it would never happen (since Byron was never an "All-Star" - even though he got snubbed the year he lead the team in ppg). One thing's for sure, Walton is disgracing his number right now.

That being said, make your vote and post your opinions.

Let me just say that I love Byron Scott. He is easily one of my all-time favorite Lakers. However, this is the Lakers we are talking about. I don't think Byron's career parallels the other Laker greats. Nonetheless, Luke needs to change numbers ASAP because he is tainting a former legends jersey.

I'm a huge fan of B.Scott. However, I don't think a role player should have his number retired, or the Lakers would run out of space thanks to the great number of quality role players that they have had.

Of course, it can be argued that Scott was more than a role player, especially when he nearly was leading the team in PPG, but he never even made an All-Star game. That's usually a sign that the player is a role-player on the team.

Nope. I don't think he'll get in there either. If he does, it'll be WAYYYY down the line. I could see Kobe and Shaq getting in before him.

Hmm...if he is a former legend, shouldn't legends have their jerseys retired? And I agree Coop should be up there too.

Probably not,... however we are talking about retiring a number. Without Scott, do the Lakers win 5 titles in 80's (he was on three of those teams)?

No. Look at the players whose numbers are represented up there. Byron was a fine player but he doesn't deserve to have his number placed among them.

Unlike other teams, our wall represents exceptional achievement.

It's the same reason we don't hang division and conference banners.

Definitely not. He was a great player for Showtime, but the players who are up there in Staples represent some of the greatest players in their generation. B-Scott does not fit that description.

No.

Just take a look at which Laker jerseys are hanging in the rafters and ask yourself how Scott compares to them.

He was an integral part of Showtime, but nevertheless, a role player.

That is the Lakers standard.

We are not the Celtics who retire any beloved player from a championship team.

He did lead the team in ppg, 87-88 (2nd of back to back championship years) at 21.7ppg, .527 fg%. This is the same year he got snubbed for the all-star game for Dale Ellis. Reasons stated across the league for this happening was because there were already 3 Lakers on the All-Star team (Magic, Kareem, Worthy).

With that being said, I still don't think it's enough justification.

Hold up Hecto!

He was a role player on a loaded team, Put him on any other team besides the Pistons, and Celtics and dude would have been in someone's rafters.

Do the Lakers win 3 titles in the 2000's without Fox and Horry? Probably not, but their numbers shouldn't be retired either.

But since he was with the Lakers and the standards are incredibly high, he doesn't deserve to have his jersey in the rafters. However, there is still the outside chance that the Miami Heat might retire his jersey

as much I love Byron...I don't think his number should be retired...and this isn't a slight on Byron...but the players with their numbers are retried are phenomenal, beyond great and because there's so few of them up there, that's what makes 'em so special.

i didn't read thru the whole thread so if someone else has stated this, my apologies

it is laker policy to only retire numbers of hall of famers, i do not see bscott ever getting to the hall because quite frankly he is not a hall of fame caliber player

that said he did contribute a lot to the run in the 80's .... i would throw cooper up there before bscott but i do not see bscotts number ever hanging from the rafters at staples ...

I'm with you on this one. George Mikan's should be the next jersey retired by the Lakers.

Former Laker players in HOF

Kareem- retired
Elgin- retired
Wilt- retired
Goodrich- retired
Magic- retired
McAdoo- Not retired (HOF for time with Braves obviously)
Mikan-retired
West- retired
Worthy- retired

As much as I like guys like Coop, Wilkes, and Dynasty and my brother's beloved Byron... it is hard to put them in that class.

Next Laker jerseys to be retired will be 8 and 34, imo.
