Quote:
"That was a great class," said Kobe Bryant, like O'Neal drafted out of high school before that was widely accepted. "A lot of great players came out of that draft. I don't think people are fully aware of the talent that came out of that draft."

The 1996 draft produced five players who were All-Stars this year. Four of them (Steve Nash, Allen Iverson, Ray Allen and Bryant) were All-NBA last season. Iverson and Nash have won MVP awards, and Nash and Bryant are among the leading candidates this season.

Need scoring? Try Bryant or Iverson. Nobody's more skilled at running an offense than Nash. For 3-point shooting, you can't do much better than Allen or Peja Stojakovic.

The NBA's two leading scorers are '96ers, and Nash tops the league in assists. Marcus Camby, taken behind Iverson with the second pick, was leading the league in rebounding early in the season before getting slowed by injuries.

some cool insight into the Lakers' acquisition of Kobe: (good 'ol Jerry West )

Quote:
How Bryant ended up going so low out of Lower Merion High School in Pennsylvania remains a bit of a mystery. Asked recently how 12 teams could have passed on him, Bryant joked that West must have been responsible. The former Lakers executive acquired Bryant's rights by sending Vlade Divac to the Charlotte Hornets.

"I think Jerry West might have had something to do with that," Bryant said. "He was kind of putting out, 'Oh no, don't draft that kid. I saw him work out. He's not that good."

Still, Bryant would have been gone long before that if John Nash had his way.

Nash was New Jersey's general manger and said the Nets planned to take Bryant with the eighth pick. In fact, he says he and then-Nets coach John Calipari told Bryant and his family of their plans at dinner the night before the draft.

But Nash says Bryant called the next afternoon to tell the Nets he wasn't interested in playing for them, probably because he knew where he could end up instead.

"As I recall, we got this phone call somewhere in the vicinity at 2 in the afternoon," Nash said. "By 6, it was apparent to us as to what had happened."

Not willing to take a chance of Calipari's first draft turning into a mess, the Nets instead took Villanova guard Kerry Kittles, the other player they had been interested in. But Nash, who would scout both players on trips to Philadelphia, said he wanted to go with Bryant anyway.

"I was a Kobe guy and I told John not to change his decision," Nash said.

Bryant has helped the Lakers win three titles and he leads the league in scoring this season. Kittles battled injuries throughout much of his seven seasons in New Jersey.

Quote:
But with a core group currently dominating the league, and players such as Marbury and No. 6 pick Antoine Walker among those who previously have been All-Stars, the class of '96 has reached a level that Bryant isn't sure will be seen again soon.

"I don't know. Maybe not for a while," Bryant said. "Our draft has bred a lot of successful NBA players, a lot of star players. And I'm proud to be a part of that, as we all are. It's not a friendly rivalry, but it's something to be proud of."

It is the best. Simple as that. It's got so many All-Stars and former All-Stars. Tons of quality stars. And even MORE starter quality players. That class is ridiculous. [/code]

Ahhhh, youth.

The Championships and finals appearance absolutely dwarf anything from '96 (in which Bryant is the ONLY one to win rings).

'84 is the best ever; and it ain't close.

Has it really been TEN years? Wow. I remember as an undergrad at LMU, walking into then-rookies Kobe, Fish and Travis freaking Knight on campus while they were ogling and trolling for co-eds. Good times.

All in all, I think Logo did an OK job with that rookie class. Someone refresh my memory: was Knight picked up off waivers that year? Or was it via trade?

Agreed. We have to compare them when everything is said and done. Will Nash and Iverson win another MVP? Will Kobe get more rings? There's a thread I've read somewhere in the Lounge that says class of 96 is starting to fade.

But as of present, class of 84 has to be on top. followed by 96 which has been great.

Knight was drafted by Chicago and immediately cut. The Lakers then picked him up. Knight went on to become one of the NBA All-Time Overpaid players.

It is true that the 84 class has more championships; Olajuwon and Jordan, however, the 96 class was a deeper draft. And, if your argument is based on how many championships a class won -- heck, the class of 87 has more NBA championships than the class of 84 which includes Pippen, Horace Grant, Kenny Smith and David Robinson.

Exactly. 84 is a better draft Top players wise. But 96' has so many guys. WAY deeper.

Strange that you left off a certain player from that '87 draft. Another one with rings.

"With the 87th pick in the 1987 NBA draft, the Chicago Bulls select - Jack Haley, UCLA"

As evidenced from the 10 rds listed above depth didn't suck in '84, either, besides - depth don't win in this league.

You can look at it this way :

The greatest player of all time,
The greatest assist man of all time,
One of the 3-5 best centers of all time,
and One of the 3-4 greatest PF's of all time
came out of that one draft.

Alvin Robertson, Jerome Kersey, Sam Perkins, and Otis Thorpe were also pretty damn good players as well from that draft.

The 1996 draft was great, but here are the greats as history will note them from that draft :

Allen Iverson
Kobe Bryant

Here are the potential greats from that draft :

Jermaine O'Neal
Ray Allen
Steve Nash

No, Stephon won't be considered among the elite 20 years from now. Y'all can say Marcus Camby, Antoine Walker, Peja, etc., but 20 years from now nobody's gonna know what they did. Even Ray Allen may fall into that category. Only Iverson and Bryant are going to be mentioned in the same breath as Hakeem, Jordan, Barkley, and Stockton.

The 1984 draft hands-down.

If it is by # of titles, just take whatever Horry's draft was and it is over.

You wanna go with '84 - Cool. But when you examine the '84 draft, you're looking at players who have completed their careers. How did that draft class look after 10 years? What were their accomplishments as of 1994? Jordan had 3 rings. Hakeem hadn't been to the finals yet (though he would win the first of back-to-backs at the end of the year.) Barkley had just taken his first and only trip to the finals. Stockton was close, but he hadn't broken Magic's record yet. A lot can change in 12 years. The true comparison cannot happen until the '96 players finish their careers.

I would venture to say that if you give the '96 class 12 more years to play, the greatest player of all-time will no longer belong to the class of '84.

Any way you look at it, it's a fun argument.

Someone refresh my memory: was Knight picked up off waivers that year? Or was it via trade?

Knight was drafted by Chicago and immediately cut. The Lakers then picked him up. Knight went on to become one of the NBA All-Time Overpaid players.

Yet ANOTHER outstanding achievement from the 96 class. 96 pwns.

Ahhhh, youth.

'84:

Dream
Jordan
Sir Charles
Stockton

The Championships and finals appearance absolutely dwarf anything from '96 (in which Bryant is the ONLY one to win rings).

'84 is the best ever; and it ain't close.

Haha you said it before I did.

As soon as I saw "96 was the best ever" from a poster or two my mind
went right to that draft (although for some reason I was thinking of it
as 1985 - I think I'm confusing NFL on that one with Jim Kelly, Marino,
Elway etc)...

Anyhow, right now ya gotta give it to the 1984.

But as someone pointed out, it's not over yet for alot of those guys.

Gotta wait it out and see who finishes with some more rings and All-Star
quality years.

I know that '84 was a great year. It WAS the best draft ever. Until '96.

I stand by that. From top to bottom, '96.

Actually I don't think the class of 96 was too special. It was just a couple of players

WRONG. You are forgetting Derek Fisher, Samaki Walker, Malik Rose, and Jerome Williams

Also, there are a few others that WENT to the FInals in that class:

Iverson, Camby(NY 99), Kittles(NJ), Erick Dampier(Indiana), Roy Rogers(NJ), Shandon Anderson twice(Jazz)
