As soon as I saw "96 was the best ever" from a poster or two my mind
went right to that draft (although for some reason I was thinking of it
as 1985 - I think I'm confusing NFL on that one with Jim Kelly, Marino,
Elway etc)...
Anyhow, right now ya gotta give it to the 1984.

That was actually the '83 NFL draft. But you're right, it was the year of the QB, with 6 taken in the 1st round.
1 Elway to Baltimore
7 Todd Blackledge to KC
14 Jim Kelly to Buffalo
15 Tony Eason to NE
24 Ken O'Brien to NYJets
27 Dan Marino to the Dolphins
Speaking of deep drafts, the 83 NFL draft was loaded with talent.
Eric Dickerson
Curt Warner (RB from Penn St)
Billy Ray Smith
Jimbo Covert
Willie Gault
Joey Browner
Gil Byrd
Jim Jeffcoat
Dave Rimington
Don Mosebar
Darrell Green
All in just the first round |

The only way to rate the quality of a draft is looking at depth. 4 greats in one draft doesn't beat 10 all-star players plus several good players. Any owner of an NBA team would prefer the 96 draft to the 84 because the chances of getting a cornerstone or a serviceable player is higher.
96>84, not in terms of producing greats, although that will be arguable in 10 years, but in terms of overall quality of players available. Another way to look at it is to produce a 14 man roster from each draft year. 96's team would win in a 7 game series.

haha, pretty funny to see all those stars 10 years ago. anyone notice that Stephon Marbury had the same funky haircut that Smush has now? (maybe its a NY thing?) Short hair J'Oneal & Nash look pretty funny too. and daaamn, Kobe's physique has come a long way! |

Exactly. Way to go, Dude. (bad pun intended ) _________________ Stephon Marbury on Kobe: "He's the only person on 'dis earth that can do 'dat. He guards people, like shuts 'em down. Then, to do 'dat on 'da offensive end. It's like 'Damn, I can't score on him AND he about to bust my ass." |
