What happened to this guy. We drafted him and he went straight to the D league.

He looked very good in his first SPL. He played in Europe for a couple of seasons. He went to the NBADL. He's tabbed as a backup center. The Summer he was drafted, he was 219#. Last Summer he was 239#. He's not quite ready yet. We may see him next Summer. He was a late second rounder, so he wasn't expected to stick on the NBA level. The Lakers don't really need him with Kwame and Bynum at backup center.

At 6'10 235#, he might be more suited to being a backup PF. When he was drafted, the Lakers didn't have Mihm, Kwame, Bynum or Turiaf. Karl Malone was old and doubtful for the season. The Lakers needed size at the time. After trading Shaq, the Lakers were counting on Brian Grant to help fill the void left by Shaq. Douthit was looking forward to being signed after the SPL. The plan was to add Vlade as the starter, and to trade for a young backup center, who could develop into a starting center. Brian Grant could spend time backing up center and PF. Douthit was a possible backup C/F. The current Lakers probably don't need Marcus Douthit, but there is always uncertainty about injuries and trades. Douthit may yet find a home with the Lakers.

Showed solid D potential in his first go round in the SPL, but no O.

After a year in the Euroleagues, the D was gone and the O was mediocre.

Put him in a one on one tryout against Turiaf and he would get absolutely slaughtered.

Turiaf is on the team. Douthit is not. The Lakers already made a choice.

Douthit may never make it in the NBA, but a pick in the mid-fifties overall is more of a stab in the dark. He's a project that may never occupy a roster spot.
