Walton Finds His Game on Trip
By Mike Bresnahan, Times Staff Writer
March 12, 2006

Whenever Laker Coach Phil Jackson looks down the bench, he sees Devean George, Sasha Vujacic, Jim Jackson and a bunch of rookies.

And Luke Walton.

A forgotten piece for most of the season, Walton has risen with the rest of the team, choosing a worthy time to rediscover his all-around game and logging 54 minutes in the Lakers' two biggest road victories of the season.

He had gone 30 games without scoring in double figures and his outside shot had been amiss until he scored 13 points and took 10 rebounds Friday against San Antonio. Walton also reclaimed some of his creative flair with four assists Wednesday against New Orleans.

"I think I'm just more relaxed out there," he said. "When I started playing bad out there earlier in the season, I started pressing and thinking about stuff all the time instead of just playing. I've been playing this game since I was 8 years old — quit thinking so much about it. The last couple games, I felt comfortable out there helping the team win."

Capsule Preview: Seattle at L.A. Lakers

When: 12:30 p.m. today at Staples Center

TV/Radio: Ch. 4/KJR (950 AM)

Records: Seattle 24-38, Lakers 33-30

Bottom line: Ray Allen wanted to eclipse the 15,000-point barrier at home on Friday, but perhaps it's fitting that he reaches the milestone in Seattle's first nationally televised broadcast game of the season. He needs three points to get to 15,000 and 20 to pass Mike Mitchell for 96th place on the NBA's all-time scoring list. If Seattle loses four games, it will guarantee the third losing season in the past four years. MVP candidate Kobe Bryant leads the league in scoring and became the youngest player in NBA history to reach 16,000 points on March 3. Bryant (27 years and 192 days) edged out Wilt Chamberlain (27 years and 196 days).

Bryant winning respect, if not a lot of friends

FRANK HUGHES; The News Tribune
Published: March 12th, 2006 01:00 AM

Perhaps the best testimony to the exceptional standing of Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant is that any recent conversation regarding him centers on his play.

In the past, of course, Bryant’s name was saddled with baggage that seemingly could not be accrued by anybody less than 40 and not in a rock band, particularly a person raised in the affluent suburbs of Philadelphia and in Italy

But Bryant defied that logic, and whenever his name came up it was accompanied by references to the sexual assault charges alleged by a woman in Vail, Colo. Or by his volatile relationship with Shaquille O’Neal. Or his uneasy relationship with Phil Jackson. Or his relationship with his wife, Vanessa. Or his dogged pursuit of the greatness of Michael Jordan.

His game was rarely analyzed without an asterisk, Bryant being one of the most controversial personalities in pop culture if for no other reason than his personality has chafed on such a large number of people – particularly those who know him.

But Bryant’s game has evolved, or perhaps the perception of Bryant’s game has evolved, to the point basketball purists are grudgingly laying aside their analysis of his character and appreciating what he achieves on the court.

SuperSonics-Lakers Preview

GAME: Seattle SuperSonics (24-38 ) at Los Angeles Lakers (33-30).

TIME: Sunday, 3:30 p.m. EST.

The Los Angeles Lakers took advantage of a tired opponent to notch an impressive win their last time out. They now look to capitalize on a favorable portion of the schedule when they host the Seattle SuperSonics.

Kobe Bryant scored 13 of his 29 points in the second quarter as the Lakers pulled away en route to a 100-92 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night.

Bryant started slowly, but made 5-of-10 shots in the second period as Los Angeles held San Antonio to 4-for-16 shooting from the floor to build a 51-37 lead that it never relinquished. The Spurs were playing for a second straight night after returning to San Antonio at 3:30 a.m. Friday.

``That's the attrition of the schedule in this league,'' Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. ``Playing back-to-backs like that (on consecutive nights) can throw a team off. The Spurs are a strong team with a deep bench, so this is still a good win for us and probably tough for them to digest.''

Smush Parker scored 18 points and Lamar Odom had 13 points, nine assists and eight rebounds, and also helped limit Tim Duncan to 12 points. Luke Walton came off the bench and had 13 points and 10 boards as the Lakers outrebounded the Spurs 51-41.

Lakers try to extend winning streak against Sonics
Last Update: 3/12/2006 12:18:36 PM

On Friday, All-Star guard Kobe Bryant finished with 29 points as the Lakers handed the defending world champion San Antonio Spurs a 100-92 loss at the AT&T Center.

Smush Parker ended with 18 points, Luke Walton netted 13 and grabbed 10 boards and Lamar Odom scored 13 points, pulled down eight rebounds and dished out nine assists in the win over the Spurs for the Lakers, who have won four of their last five games overall.

The Lakers are 17-12 as the host this season.

Seattle is fresh off of going 3-2 on a five-game homestand. Ray Allen had a game-high 38 points and dished out five assists to lead the SuperSonics to a 107-96 victory over Kevin Garnett and the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday at KeyArena.

Rashard Lewis ended with 15 points and eight rebounds, Earl Watson netted 12 points and handed out 10 assists and Chris Wilcox scored 11 in the win over Minnesota for the SuperSonics, who have won two of their last three games overall.

The Sonics are a dismal 9-22 as the visitor this season. They have lost two straight and nine of their last 10 on the road.

Lakers look primed for a stretch run
Jackson won't predict a big finish, but he likes the offense's execution in recent games.

By KEVIN DING
The Orange County Register

EL SEGUNDO – The Lakers appear primed for their best stretch of the season - Coach Phil Jackson senses it, too, but isn't secure enough yet to "predict it" - and most of the progress has come in sharp execution of the triangle offense.

"That's really where they're developing as a basketball team the past couple weeks," Jackson said Saturday. "It has helped us out considerably."

Said Kobe Bryant: "We gain confidence and trust in the system the more we see results, the more it works for us."

So after shredding the NBA's best defense in San Antonio, it would seem the Lakers are set up to storm through Seattle this afternoon; the SuperSonics are last in the league in points allowed and second-to-last in field-goal defense.

But if the Lakers do storm through Seattle, it will be another substantial step for them, Jackson said.

SuperSonics 120, Lakers 113

03/12/2006

By KEN PETERS / Associated Press

Rashard Lewis scored 26 points, Ray Allen had 19 points to pass a career milestone and added 10 rebounds, and the Seattle SuperSonics beat the Los Angeles Lakers 120-113 Sunday.

Kobe Bryant scored 22 points on 8-of-29 shooting for Los Angeles, and he missed three long jumpers in a row in the closing seconds as the Lakers tried to catch up.

Allen passed the 15,000-point plateau with a 3-pointer in the second quarter. In his 10th NBA season, Allen became the 97th player in league history to reach the milestone.

Chris Wilcox added 21 points for Seattle and each Sonics starter scored in double figures. Johan Petro scored 13 points, Luke Ridnour had 12, and reserve Earl Watson chipped in with 14 points and eight assists.

Lamar Odom had 21 points and six assists for Los Angeles, and Chris Mihm scored 20 points before landing awkwardly, hurting his right ankle and leaving the game with 49 seconds remaining and Seattle ahead 117-112.

Luke Walton helped the Lakers close the gap in the fourth quarter by scoring 10 of his 17 points. He finished the game 7-of-7 from the floor.

Seattle was up 89-85 heading into the final quarter and extended the lead to 104-94 on Watson's 3-pointer with 6:27 remaining.

The Lakers led 41-36 early in the second quarter, but the Sonics came back to take their biggest lead of the half on Ridnour's layup 5 seconds before halftime.

The Sonics built their lead to 67-55 on Ridnour's 3-pointer early in the third quarter, but the Lakers came back to catch them at 74-all on Brian Cook's jumper midway through the period.

Bryant missed five shots and didn't score in the first quarter.
