Quote: | Carbone won a bronze medal at the Olympic Sports Festival and parlayed that into a "real job" as the Philadelphia 76ers' strength and conditioning coach before hooking up with Bryant after his junior year in high school. They spent 6-8 hours a day preparing Bryant for the NBA, and it became clear that Bryant's drive and Carbone's guidance made for a good team. Carbone became Bryant's personal trainer for nine years - both are Orange County residents - until Carbone last season became the Lakers' strength and conditioning coach.
So Carbone is behind the scenes for all of the Lakers with Chip Schaefer, the director of athletic performance and player development. They have increased Andrew Bynum's bench press almost 50 percent (to 230 pounds) and improved Sasha Vujacic's speed and strength so much over the summer that Coach Phil Jackson could hardly believe in training camp that this was the same kid everyone had bad-mouthed to him.
Despite those rapid gains, Carbone's advice to young Lakers players has been the same as what he told Bryant 11 years ago: "Don't think now. Think four years from now and how strong you'll be if you train like this consistently."
Is it coincidence that in Bryant's fourth NBA season he became a champion? |
Makes me a bit more optimistic for the future... |
