Quote:

When it comes to the raw numbers of coaching NBA champions, Phil Jackson has doubled, plus one, Heat coach Pat Riley's total of four. But in the raw coaching category, one supreme-sized judge who has played for both ranks Riley ahead of Jackson.

''I don't want to hurt anybody's feelings, but he's actually been the best coach I've ever had,'' Heat center Shaquille O'Neal said Sunday of Riley.

O'Neal and Jackson were together five seasons with Los Angeles. With Kobe Bryant, they were the main thrusters in the Lakers returning to the stratospheric heights the franchise had not known since the Magic Johnson/Kareem Abdul-Jabbar days under Riley.

''We all know his résumé,'' O'Neal said. ``We all know he knows what he's talking about. When he talks, guys listen. I've heard a lot of horrifying stories about him, but I haven't seen it.

``We haven't had any problems. He'll come at me every now and then, but if he knows that's what it takes to get me going, that's what he'll do.''

O'Neal then described Riley's terse reaction to his performance in Game 5 vs. Detroit. On the flight back to Miami, Riley came to the front of the plane, dropped a couple of curse words on O'Neal and left.

''He's the Italian version of my father. I don't know if he's Italian or not,'' O'Neal said with a smile, likely knowing that Riley is of Irish descent.

``Very straightforward. Whatever he says, he does, backs it up.''

He really seems to have a mental problem. He's far too childish for a man that age.

Here are the 3 greatest ever in my opinion.

1. Red Auerbach
2. Phil Jackson
3. Pat Riley

The Coaches Holy Trinity. The question to answer though is who would be number four. I think those three are obvious choices for the top 3 spots. And they are just head and shoulders above everyone else.

I don't know if Larry Brown in number 4, but I would put him there or at least at the 4-7 spots.

he likes someone because they led him to the eastern conference finals??

what happens when dallas wins the title?

he used to laugh at sacramento and the rest for only hanging division banners or lesser banners than title ones.

he however has gotten caught up with the euphoria of makin it to the finals, but not finishing the job.

if dallas takes 'em down, and im predicting that they will, just too much talent ... but when dallas takes 'em down he will have lowered his standards to the likes of the queens.

and then HE WILL KNOW . . . championships only come through top notch quality organizations . . . like the great one that he left behind.

It's funny that people always get so bent out of shape over such statements. Of course he's going to say that about his current team, coach and players. Especially during the playoffs and Finals. Get over it.

Why don't you get over the comments others make about Shaq?

It doesn't even warrant a comparison. One guy helped him get 3 rings and an equivalent amount of Finals MVP's...after years of being called a choker....and the other got him a Conference Title. It's not an appropriate time to make the comparison IMO....Shaq may have other ways of gauging how good a coach is though.

I'm sure Stan Van Gundy appreciates that comment after Shaq helped screw him out of his job.

I think this dig was more directed at Stan Van Jeremy than the Lakers or Phil, even though obviously Phil is ahead of Riley.

even many of you guys here say you hate PJ. i could see it being a valid comment. Maybe he likes Pats style of dealing w/ players more than Phils layed back zen style. some of you act like jealous ex-girlfriends when you hear a Shaq comment.

Doesn't matter. 3 Titles vs 1 Finals appearance.

PJ is the best. Simple as that.

And while you say some sound like a jealous ex-gf, others sound like a jealous current girlfriend with the way they defend Shaq.
