|
|
The San Francisco 49ers have signed three of their low-round selections from this year's draft, all in the sixth or seventh rounds, to four-year contracts.
The three deals are the first accords in the 2006 draft class for San Francisco, which had nine selections overall, including a pair of first-rounders, tight end Vernon Davis of Maryland and North Carolina State defensive end/linebacker Manny Lawson.
Tight end Delanie Walker of Central Missouri State and defensive end Melvin Oliver of LSU, both taken in the sixth round, signed contracts worth $1.71 million and $1.695 million, respectively. Seventh-round safety Vickiel Vaughn of Arkansas received a contract worth $1.64 million.
All three players received minimum base salaries for the four years of their contracts and all three deals include a possible "escalator," which could increase their base salary for 2009. Walker got a signing bonus of $102,000, Oliver of $85,280 and Vaughn of $33,534.
Of the three rookies, Walker might be the most interesting, in large part because of his versatility. A wide receiver in college, Walker has great size (6-feet-1, 236 pounds) and the 49ers coaches envision him being able to full multiple roles. The former Division II standout can play fullback and H-back and this week the team moved him to tight end to get a look at him at that position.
In his final two seasons at Central Missouri State, he caught 109 passes for 1,347 yards and 10 touchdowns, rushed 31 times for 420 yards and three scores, and also returned kickoffs and punts.
Oliver was a two-year starter at LSU, had 20 sacks during his career, and figures to have an opportunity to play quickly in a 49ers defensive line rotation that is thin at end. Vaughn, who never missed a college game, likely will play on special teams.
The 49ers' signings raised to eight the number of choices who have now completed deals from a draft class that had 255 members. Only San Francisco and Chicago, both of which have reached agreements with three picks, have signed more than one choice.

I'm still pissed that the Raiders or the Niners didn't pick Matt Leinart. |

Since L.A. doesnt have a Football team anymore. Ill support other California Football teams. I'm a Niners and Chargers fan. I'm still a Raiders fan though.
