DETROIT - Authorities filed a runaway juvenile petition against a Michigan teenager who flew to the Middle East to be with a man she met on the MySpace.com Internet site.

The paperwork was filed Monday in Tuscola County Family Court against Katherine Lester of Gilford, said Kyle Jaskula, the court administrator.

At a hearing Monday, Judge W. Wallace Kent Jr. ordered Lester to give up her passport and undergo counseling. He did not rule on the validity of the petition.

If the judge finds that Lester was a runaway, she could be placed under court supervision until she turns 18. Such supervision usually means she would be monitored by a probation officer and made to undergo counseling, Jaskula said. Further hearings have not been scheduled.

Prosecutor Mark Reene said his office filed the petition out of concern for Lester's safety after talking to her family and the sheriff's office.

Lester, who turns 17 on Wednesday, was en route to a Tel Aviv,
Israel, airport when she was intercepted in Amman, Jordan, by U.S. authorities who seized her passport and put her on a flight back to the United States.

She was traveling to be with Abdullah Jimzawi, a 20-year-old high school dropout who lives with his parents in Jericho,
West Bank. They met through MySpace.com, a social networking Web site whose popularity with teenagers has raised concerns among U.S. authorities, with scattered accounts of sexual predators targeting minors on the site.

Jimzawi, in a recent interview with The Associated Press, said he loves the girl and the two planned to marry. She was to convert to Islam, he said.

Lester has not spoken to reporters since returning to the United States on June 9. A message left Tuesday with her father seeking comment was not immediately returned.

Reene said that in court, Lester had a positive attitude and appeared to be receptive to the efforts to help her. Counselors will explain to her the impact of leaving the country and talk about the different culture she would face in the West Bank, Reene said.

"There are so many things she needs to fully understand," he said. "We want to take every available step to inform her, give her the opportunity to make the best decision."

Dude, back in like '97 when I was a freshman in high school, all young and stupid and desperate to get laid, I met this chick online who lived in the valley. I had my mom drive me to a mall to meet her. I told my mom I was gonna meet my friends there to watch a movie. When I saw the girl I almost vomited. She looked like Bam-Bam Bigelow with a blonde wig on. I had her buy my pretzels though, then I ran for my life after I excused myself to go the restroom. I actually dashed out of the restroom right past her. She just stood there and watched. Oh man it was horrifying.

I agree that myspace has its benefits. I think is a great way for troops to communicate with their families, or musicians posting there information. But these little paris hilton wannabes that put on heavy eyeliner and take the pictures of the side of their face just use the service as some kind of "self promotion" kind of thing. Whatever information they post about themselves is probably 85 % false. Im not a troop, im not a musician (not yet). My self esteem is sufficient enought were i dont have to showoff pictures of me in my sisters pants with some cheap tribal tattoo. If i want to keep in contact with my friends, I USE A GOD DAMNED PHONE!!

This is near where I live and heard this story. Don't blame MySpace or the Internet for this problem. Blame the parents.

One, the parents got her a passport so she could go to Canada. Did they notice her age?

She said she was going to Canada with some friends. Did the parents ever talk to the parents?

She had her parents drop her off at the train station. They did, and then just left her there without waiting for the other family.

My favorite part of the whole matter is the quote from her parents:

"Shawn Lester told The Saginaw News that her daughter has "never given me a day's trouble. ... I just don't understand with all these new laws protecting America how a 16-year-old kid could get out of the country." She said her daughter never had a boyfriend and seemed to be content with that."

Thank you, Shawn. You just admitted to the world how big of an effin idiot you are!

WOW^^^, thats terrible. granted it starts at home. but I will say this, there are to MANY oppurtunities to try your luck as a kid nowadays. especially with the internet and places like myspace.

why do you think they have elementary schools with grades from 1st to 5th or 6th. and junior highs from 6 to 8th or 9th. and then hig schools up until 12 grade. they seperate these kids for the most part. because of age, because of difference in mentality, maturity levels, etc.

now on myspace. a 14 year old, overly developed very cute little girl, can post her Pic, in a G-string, and put 21 yrs old as her age. and guess who's going to come hollering? Other little boys, and full grown men(predators, and just average full grown dudes that want a quick peek at a piece of tail). would you like your little sister, your daughter, etc running a soft porn site without your knowledge? probably not.

The crazy part about myspace, is that what used to just be highschool roomers. are now roomers known worldwide. thats worldwide embarrassment for the party involved. Thats a problem in itself. thats school pranks, that are supposed to stay local. that can get out, and turn into a chain email, clowing your kids, and full grown adults. its funny to you and me at times. but we have no clue how the person on the other end is filling. with there picture/videos of them being circulated thru out the planet.

Myspace is a great idea, dont get me wrong. but believe me, its more trouble then its a good thing. most people who have myspace, already have MSN/AOL/or Yahoo messengers to keep intouch with friends. you can send any file you want. usually when you have the internet at your home. they give you free webspace, to make your own page. similar to myspace, so you can post family/friend photos. the only difference, is that they use to monitor that stuff a lot more. but on myspace. its all out craziness.

i will say this, if myspace was going when I was 15. I would have 6 kids by 7 different mothers(i know the count is off, just for exaggeration). why? because I would have open access to contact and talk to these women. and guess what else. I would have a few older women, i mean A lot older. and my parents raised me right. but thats just how kids do it. kids usually try to test you, and go as far as they possibly can, before boundaries are set. and myspace has no boundaries. not only can i sneak and talk to some chick at midnight, about sex. I can see pics of her naked body. just to get things cranked up a nother notch. sorry folks. this is not a good look for the kids. not at all. Kids are not mature enough to know what to do with freedom like that. quiet as kept neither are adults under 26.

and another thing, for those on myspace that are there to hook up with people. remember something. if you put someone in your top 8, and they disappear and the new person you're with is now in your top 8. if they saw your page before you guys hooked up. they know who was there and if they're smart, they would realize that their probably nothing more then just another #.

a lot of married folks go on myspace to cheat, i lot married folks go on myspace and end up having what you would call emotional relationships with other people. which is just as bad as cheating. why do people do these things? because the internet is a place where you can hide behind a screen name usually. or make a new persona for yourself. if in real life, you're somewhat dull. you think, "hey let me get on myspace, and make a new name for myself. I'm now known as "Felicia aka The freak of the week".

its a classic case of what would happen if there were no laws, and no one would say anything to you if you did something unethical. how crazy would people truly act? you could only imagine. and that imagining happens on myspace. just look on there. you see older men and women with these crazy screen names, with wild comments. as well as kids trying to be grown and sex at 14 years of age.

like another poster said. for Bands(music/ fan type sites). its great. If you need to find a missing person.. great. but personal pages need to go.
