West hit a Grand Slam this week and the off-season is still young. Jerry, please come home.

That wasn't why West made that trade. He was clearing cap space to sign Shaq. If Shaq isn't part of the equation, West doesn't make that trade.

I'd rate Houston as the winner in this trade, with an asterisk. If you look at the trade as Battier for Gay, it's a wash. Houston got a proven player who can help them now, and Memphis got a prospect. However, Houston also unloaded Stromile Swift, who was an overpaid bust. Advantage Houston.

The asterisk comes from the fact that Memphis will doubtlessly try to trade Swift. If West could unload Swift for another prospect or a good draft choice, then this changes to Advantage Memphis. It seems like there's always some sucker out there who will overpay for an underachieving big man, even if Isiah is probably out of the market this year.

It will take some fancy footwork for West to keep Memphis in the playoffs this coming year. The team has a bloated payroll and is bleeding cash. This could be a team on the way down.

Well said. Talent-wise, West got the better end of the deal, but unless Gay pays major dividends, it's not that lopsided of a trade.

Also mentioned before is the fact that Houston wants to win NOW. Even though TMac has been hurt, the Rockets are still hoping that he and Yao (who blew up this year) will lead them to the promise land. And having a reliable swingman who can play D and shoot will supplement that.

Huge steal.

That being said - I don't think the Grizzlies are going to be immediately better with this move.

Gay is young and will need 1-2 years to really learn how to win. Stro is just stupid.

In terms of value though - excellent trade. West owned the Rockets on this one.

Battier is a perfect player for JVG's system, so I think it was a good move for the Rockets. Gay's potential could pay off for the Griz as well. Good trade, in my opinion.

Kobe decided to be a Laker. Arn, who was his agent at the time brought Kobe to the Lakers for a private workout. West was very impressed with Kobe. Kobe was going to be a Laker whether or not Shaq joined the team.

Exactly, as West also had a plan B of bringing in Mutumbo and possibly Dale Davis had Shaq not signed with us. Kobe was going to be a Laker regaurdless.

But yes the trading of Vlade did help in clearing cap space, it was a by product.

Perhaps Kobe wanted to be a Laker, but his rights belonged to the Hornets. Charlotte was not required to trade him to us.

Anyway, that's beside the point. The prior poster argued that Divac-for-Kobe was a risky trade. It wasn't.
