Depends on:

1. Swell direction
2. Swell period
3. Swell size
4. Wind direction
5. Wind speed
6. Day of the week

Santa Monica because I appreciate the beauty and brightness of the greenish/brownish, luminous turds that float around the area.

Dont forget: Tide conditions.

I think Chef was referring more to what beach to "chill"...and in that case Hermosa is a GREAT call.

Surfing-wise....we all know the drill: Surfline.com...check the conditions or call a friend in the area.

BTW, I was in Pacific Beach (San Diego) for the 4th. Over half a million people on the beach for the holiday (total mob scene)....yet, in the water near tower 23, AT MOST, only 30 people in the line-up surfing. I had a blast.

Rode a 9'2" all weekend...long board paradise. Knee to waist high Waikiki-"wanna-be"-sets all day. Pretty much any wave you wanted, you rode.

I forgot how much warmer the water is in in SD as well.

BTW the best beach to chill and "chase skirts" is anywhere from El Porto in Manhatten beach to the Pier in Hermosa....as Chef said: Good Call.

Best beach crowd and less tourist traffic.

("Inland Empire-East LA" beach guy/family...head to the Santa Monica Pier)

I used to live in Venice beach and surf there during the winter and spring. I'm still alive, so the water isn't as bad as people say it is.

Or try to understand Rockin' Fig on the KROQ surf report.

I don't know what I'd do with out surfline though. And to be honest, I like Sunset Beach (HB). First off, it's my beach, I walk there, there's no crowd and although they're not as substantial as further south, towards the cliffs or the pier, they're doable. Secondly, did I mention I can walk there?

FRIDAY:

Weak surf overall. Small mix of SSW/SW swells manage 1-2/3ft surf for exposures, while good breaks pull in plus sets on the right tide as NW wind swell crosses through giving good sandbars peaky waves.

Conditions: Light E/SE winds 0-5kt early, then WSW 10-14kt over the afternoon. Enjoy the warm water!

Laguna Beach. Damn, I wish they still had the stands next to the Bball courts there. I remember B-Scott ballin there all the time. Now it's just rejects like Sean Rooks. Damn Shame.

Just got back from Zuma beach actually, it was alright, the waves were pretty small but there were a few larger ones. It got very windy and cold around the afternoon, but overall it was pretty good.

Maibu/Zuma!! Less crowds than Santa Monica or Venice Beach meaning less litter on the shores or in the water. Also, Zuma has less fat Shamu-like women blocking out all the sun as well than the competition. I guess if you really dig pro beach volleyball tournaments, Hermosa wins hands down but I don't follow that sport.

I have family in Redondo so I hang out there a lot. Has a small town charm about it, "Mom and Pop" type of restaurants, and it's still pretty clean.

Yup...when nothing is really going on swell-wise, I pack up the 9'2" and roll down there. It's fun--a zoo--but fun.

When it's doing, these are my favorite 3 spots in Southern California:

Blacks (Boom!)

The Point (Backdoor/Pipe on a good size, long period SSE)

Big Rock (Mind-bending barrels)

And right there:

Silver Strand (a little overrated, but still e-p-i-c when it's on)
