Sad. The guy was awesome. Would have been one of the all time great closers. Thanks, Jim Tracy.

(Of course, there's always hope he comes back, but it probably won't be with the Dodgers.)

Gagne May Face Back Surgery

Quote:

Eric Gagne could be facing back surgery that would end his season and, with free agency pending, possibly his career-long affiliation with the Dodgers.

An MRI showed as many as two herniated disks in the relief pitcher's lower back, which could be corrected by surgery. Gagne remained at St. Vincent Medical Center on Thursday. Dr. Robert Watkins, spine surgeon and co-director of the Los Angeles Spine Surgery Institute at St. Vincent, is expected to make a decision on surgery as early as today...

This is really sad, if indeed his run with the Dodgers is over. As a closer, he was truly special. There have been a lot of great closers over the years ā€“ Eck, Lee Smith, Trevor Hoffman, Rivera, Rod Beck, Rollie Fingers, John Franco, Goose, Henke, Mesa, Rob Nen, Percival, Righetti, Worrell ā€“ but there was just something about the flair that Gagne has. The change of speeds, the velocity, the ridiculous movement. Hard to believe this is the same guy who struggled as a starter and was almost traded before being moved to the bullpen, where he not only found his niche, but truly dominated.

Iā€™m glad I got to see him pitch ā€“ in person and on TV - on several occasions.

I saw him pitch once in person... that was this season in his first game back. But he was the only reason that I watched Dodger games on TV for years. He coulda been the best closer of this generation.
