The Future... The difference tonight when Farmar and Bynum were on the court versus off the court was obvious to anyone who attended. They both played impact games on either end of the floor, and they both made the Lakers click. With seven practices and three games under their belts, the Lakers have made some progress. However, that is hardly time enough to get more than the basics down in the offense.

The Grizzlies, again, tried to take advantage of this by partially fronting Bynum at times and also pressuring the passing lanes. Trailing in the fourth, Rambis brought Bynum back and then followed shortly later with Farmar. The rookied imposed his will on both ends of the floor and guided the Lakers to the win.

What we want to see from Bynum in the SPL is growth and progress in his game. He has shown that so far with a much improved performance this year versus last year. I mentioned in previous reports a year ago that some of Bynum's misses would eventually be And-1s when he got stronger and started to play above the rim more. We saw some of that tonight. What Farmar is giving is glimpses of a true Triangle floor general. And also one that has some skills to play on the defensive end, as well. So many of the things he does on the floor will translate to the next level. He's certainly the best rookie guard we have brought in since we've been running the Triangle. It's no wonder a guy like Tex, who has seen it all, is extremely high on him.

Bynum -- -- First, let's go back to what I mentioned in the past two games about the Lakers running the offense and how that comes to play for Bynum. In the first game against Memphis, Bynum had 7-foot Andreas Glyniadakis partially fronting him in the post to take away the entry pass. He wasn't fronting Bynum all the way, just on his shoulder. When you take something away in the Triangle there are always counters to exploit it (high-lows, corner sequences, etc.). Unfortunately, the team only had a couple practices under their belt, so their spacing and execution in the first game was horrible. Bynum consequently only got a couple post touches and couldn't exploit the Memphis interior (instead, he hustled in transition to get his points). In the next game, we saw the spacing improve, more defenders playing behind Bynum and he was able to work the post a little and put together a decent offensive game against McCoy. Tonight, we came back to the match up with Glyniadakis, but this time with more knowledge of how to get Bynum the ball. "We had some time to watch some tape," Rambis said. "Show guys some of the things they can do to counter the defense of the Grizzlies." Bynum delivered with 24 points on 8-11 shooting and 8-15 from the line in 32 minutes. He could have gone for 30 had he hit a few more FTs or had he gotten the ball in the last 7 minutes of the game. The production was impressive, but more impressive were the legit bigman post plays he was making. He combined some genuine power moves with his finesse game.

He started with a miss of a jumper to beat the shot clock. He went up high for an inbounds pass then hit a short turnaround. He contested a shot from the weakside on one end, then battled in a crowd to grab an offensive board on the other end and draw FTs. He got beat on the D end, getting on his heels when the Memphis bigman made a quick spin move and attack, but Bynum went at him on the very next play, attacking from the high post and drawing more FTs. In the second quarter, he swiped a rebound away from a Memphis player and dunked. He took the ball in the post, pivoted, then shot in the chest of the defender to draw more FTs. He boxed out and fought with Alexander Johnson for a board and drew more FTs. He was fouled again on a strong post move and drew FTs. He took a post entry feed, spun on the baseline and powered an And-1 two-handed dunk over the D. This was a particularly impressive play, using his strengths properly to his advantage to both play above the rim and overpower the defender. This is something that you didn't see in his first year. He and Farmar ran the weakside pinch post, Bynum got a return feed, spun on the defender and hit the short jumper at the rim (his go-to move). He had 14 points at the half in 15:28 of action.

In the third quarter, Bynum again showed his improved transition skills getting out on the break in a hurry and finishing an alley-oop from Farmar. He was fouled on a dish from Farmar for a couple more FTs. Bynum again imposed his size and strength on his defender with a power dropstep and dunk over his man (another highlight play that got the crowd going). He scored a layup, pulling down a high entry pass above everyone and putting it in. After resting, Bynum came in with 7:18 left in the game. He had 22 points in 24 minutes of playing time at this point. He didn't get any post opportunites during this stretch before finally earning a couple FTs on a high-low sequence with with 59 seconds left. He hit both clutch free throws to give the Lakers the lead. Had he gotten more touches in that stretch, as mentioned, he could have gotten to 30.

Bynum pulled down 7 boards in the game and had 1 block. He ripped a few boards out of other players hands tonight, which was nice to see. He had one swat taken away when Douthit was whistled for a foul, and he also altered a number of shots. He showed some nice hustle in the fourth to grab an offensive board and call timeout before falling out of bounds. Excellent game...it's what you want to see. "He's a work in progress," Rambis said after the game, "but he will get better."

Farmar -- -- The Lakers got a steal. Period. He's only 19, but he's baller. I don't know what kind of impact he will have next year or how many minutes he will play under Phil, but two years from now? He's going to get a lot of minutes. Rambis had mentioned that they were going to tweak his shot a little this offseason and Farmar mentioned that he is also going to hit the weight room. He's only going to improve, but what they got right now looks very, very good. "He has a high basketball IQ," Rambis said. Mitch says that they aren't going to depend on anything from him. Rambis will give the same company line, but he also added, "When it comes down to it, if you outplay those in front of you, you are going to get time." Will Phil play him? Who knows for sure, but Farmar is definitely the kind of player and rookie that Phil will love. Quietly, I'm sure they're talking about making sure Farmar sees some quality action next season. "I have high expectations for myself," Farmar said. "Higher than any GM or any fan."

Tonight, was just another great performance to combine with his previous stretches of excellent SPL ball. Smush Parker was on hand to check out his teammates and was mobbed at times by autograph seekers. What a difference a year makes. I was hoping to see Farmar battle Lowry in the first Memphis match up, but Lowry hadn't inked his deal yet. Tonight, we saw the two go head to head at times. Farmar cetainly outplayed him, but that can happen any given night. But still, you look for glimpses...bits and pieces of skills to see what a player has in him. We had one such glimpse on a play when Farmar cut the lane off for Lowry by using his lateral speed and making him back the ball out on one defensive sequence. Very nice. I want to see more, please. Farmar fouled Lowry on his first possession against him and gave up penetration, but that was the last we saw of that for the rest of the game. Farmar deflected an entry pass, hustled to the sideline and threw it off his man for a Laker possession. We also saw Farmar make some clutch defensive stands. He contested a three, jumping off his own man to force a brick off the backboard with a minute left. Shortly later, he helped his man into a double dribble call. He also got a piece of a final three pointer, using his hops to get up and graze the ball as it left his man's hands. It's nice to see Farmar play on both sides of the court and this was something he stressed after the game. He talked about showing leadership and communicating on D and said he takes pride in working hard on that end of the court. One of his personal goals is to improve his defensive skills. "Anytime you can take someone out defensively and be a great one on one defender, that helps the team," Farmar said.

Offensively, Farmar just fits the Tri. He had 7 points in the first half and 3 assists (though he was credited with just 2). He also made several passes that led to FTs for others. Farmar attacked the lane on the first possession and drew FTs. He dunked on a breakaway. He hit Wafer for a jumper on the break. He was called for a charge on a pass off. He created a jumper for Slaughter. He zipped a no look feed from the wing three spot to Green who cut weakside and it drew FTs. He worked a high-post weakside sequence to Bynum for a score. The offense stalled on one set with clock low and Farmar promptly exploded past his man for an And-1 layup.

In the second half, he throttled it up a bit more as he had done in the previous games. He flew out of the backcourt receiving an outlet behind the D, pushed it up and lobbed to Bynum for a dunk. He faked a three, attacked the baseline and then fed Bynum for FTs. He pushed up the break and while Bynum was calling for a lob on one side, Farmar fed the other lane for a layup. He threw a perfect high-entry pass to Bynum who outreached everyone and scored easily. He hit a fade over his man from the wing. He attacked, put the breaks on to lose his man who went flying by in the air and then Farmar hit a short bank. (That play had the crowd going.) He also had another near highlight, spinning and going behind his back on a pass that would have led to a dunk if Farmar's man wasn't whistled for a foul. In the fourth, Farmar swished a long two. He hit a pull-up catch-and-shoot three in transition.

Then Farmar hit the key basket of the game. Remember, the first time these teams played, neither Farmar nor Bynum saw the ball in the closing minutes as we had a couple turnovers by Douthit and other players trying to score. With 34 second left, the coaches drew up a play to get Farmar to work off the two-man game. Farmar took his man off the screen, but didn't like what he saw. He waited for the big to come over and reset the screen. He made a subtle fake to his right and as his man looked for the coming screen, Farmar exploded past him to the left and hit a layup. "I was going to dunk it," he said afterwards. "I should have dunked it." Farmar finished with a smooth 21 points on 7-10 shooting and 6 assists (only given 5) in 31 minutes.

Pinnock -- -- Rambis said he was pleased with the job Pinnock has done so far. He mentioned that it is hard for any SG coming out of college to get used to handling the ball in the backcourt as part of the Lakers two-guard front. Pinnock had a bad turnover in crunch time. With 20 seconds left in the game, he was pushing the ball up court against pressure. Instead of holding up and looking for some open space to run the clock, he zipped a pass high and out of bounds for a turnover. Farmar looked pissed. I'm sure Pinnock was with that one. Pinnock finished with 8 points in 26 minutes on 4-10 shooting. Including the late-game mistake, had 4 turnovers on the night. Rambis stressed again and again after the game that the team has had only 7 practices, so there will be a lot of mistakes.

Pinnock did his damage on the offensive end in the second half. He didn't score in the first half in 9 minutes and on only 1 shot attempt. In the third, he attacked from the wing and scored a layup. He got tapped on a short jumper. He took an outlet and attacked in transition for a score. Out of the weave, he attacked off the dribble and hit an And-1 off the glass. Douthit lobbed to Pinnock on the break for a dunk. Pinnock also had 6 boards on the night.

Slaughter -- -- He showed some hustle tonight, erasing a layup attempt on transition D with a swat. He tracking down an offensive board with some good hustle. He dunked on a breakaway. He drew FTs on a battle under the rim. He passed out of the post to a teammate on the baseline for a score. He set up another teammate with an interior feed that led to an And-1. He scored of Alexander Johnson down low. He showed his range again, knocking down a jumper from the top of the key. He finished with 7 points on 3-8 shooting and 7 boards in 28 minutes.

Wafer -- -- He didn't play in the first quarter. He made a nice drive and pass in the offense (need to see that more). He got stripped while looking up and exposing the ball as he was about to make a swing pass. He attacked down the lane and got tapped on the finish. He drilled a jumper for his only points of the first half. In the third, he threw a soft perimeter pass that was picked off, then he compounded his mistake by giving a soft And-1 foul on the breakaway. In the fourth, with the floor spread, he attacked to his right down the middle of the lane and drew FTs. He attacked in transition, this time to his left and drew more FTs. He finished with 6 points on 1-5 shooting for the night.

Green -- -- Not a good night for Green, which included getting yelled at by Rambis for a transition D mistake. He did have one highlight play that didn't count. He followed a shot that got goaltended off the rim, Green soared in and jammed back in the goaltend. He was fouled on a breakaway and threw up two bricks from the line. He missed a layup then got swatted. He went 0-5 for 1 point on the game and missed his only perimeter jumper, a three. Meanwhile, he didn't have the success against Warrick he did in the first game as Warrick scored 24 on the night.

Douthit -- -- He didn't score but had some nice defensive plays throughout the game, including pulling the chair on his man in the post to draw a travel. He also had a great hedge on a screen and recovered to his man to thwart one offensive sequence. He stepped around his man to poke a post feed away. He poked another ball loose for a steal on the perimeter, then pushed it up and lobbed to Pinnock to tie the game. He worked a high-low sequence to Bynum to help Bynum draw FTs. He led all Lakers with 8 boards and didn't score on 4 attempts.

Everyone Else -- -- Michael Fey scored 7 points on 3-4 shooting. He had a nice throwdown following up a miss. He also powered in a reverse layup and scored an And-1 on an interior feed from Slaughter. Nile Murray shot a poor 2-8. Nick Horvath got the start and was horrible in the offense. He had 5 turnovers and scored 2 points on 1-4 shooting. He did have a couple of nice moves he failed to finish on, but clearly the chemistry in the offense was suffering when he was out there.

[NOTE: I won't be able to cover the next game, but I will attend the following one. -db]

MB - There will be a long, dry summer of no Laker news and far too many pipe dreams.

I'm not going to fight the traffic coming home tomorrow. That sounds miserable. But, I'll get to the next game for LG.

Every time someone calls Farmar "Jordan" I think of MJ. He either needs a nickname or we need to call him Farmar.

Why do you think Farmar seems to be so comfortable in the triangle? It takes some players a few years to pick up, and it seems like he has a good handle on it already. Is it similar to what Howland was using at UCLA orare we just not used to seeing a smart point guard on the Lakers?

Thanks DB! Farmar is turning a few heads, including Smush:

"Smush Parker was on hand to check out his teammates and was mobbed at times by autograph seekers." Translates into, "can this guy really take my spot."

Then Rambis drops his bombshell: "When it comes down to it, if you outplay those in front of you, you are going to get time." This is good for the Lakers. Smush in my mind is clearly the starter, but to have a promising player (although a rook) behind him is promising. Makes me wonder if Sasha is regulated to having "Steve Kerr" type duties mainly.

Great to read that Bynum and Farmar are doing well...

^^^Combination of both.

UCLA Coach Howland stressed fundamentals to the core. He benched players or yanked them from starting for not setting proper screens or cuts. While the half-court offense looked plodding and heavily PG-dominant, in many ways it was the by-product of cuts and off-the ball movement. The PG was meant to watch plays develop and only initiate the O to get the best possible open shot.

Add to that the fact that Jordan has always been known for being a heads-up PG with court sense, PLUS the fact that Ben frequently sued him as a 2G to get him to play off the ball and confuse opposing guards on coverage. While his shooting can be streaky, he did have the stamina and athleticism to m be effective as a 2G in strecthes during college.

Whether intended or not, Howland's game plans made Jordan uniquely capable of adapting to the tri.

If, if, IF!!!! Jordan can show contineud progress and adapatabiltiy to NBA-level play, can you imagine in three years what the Jordan-Bynum tandem, playing alongside KOBE, will be like?

DB -

Simply stellar. You have a gift for putting the game together for those of us who live too far to go. Thanks so much. *sigh* It's so nice to have BB news in summertime. I feel better already!

I'm SO excited about Farmar. There is a future for the Lakers here, you can just see it unfolding. With hard work and a couple more seasons under their belt Bynum and Farmar will be so much fun to watch. I love it that they have some chemistry. Right on!

How big of a range does Bynum have in his game? Can he step out and hit the 15 footer?

The focus for Andrew right now is learning how to play with his back to the basket.

Thanks DB! To echo some of the other posters here, you provide a great service to those of us exiled too far away to be able to attend the games. I love reading your in-depth game reports. I always feel like I was at the game after reading them, you paint such a clear picture. Thanks for all your hard work on our behalf. It is MUCH appreciated!

Great news about the developing chemistry between Farmar and Andrew. I remember being very impressed with Jordan when I watched the UCLA/LSU championship game. Glad to hear he's picking up the triangle so quickly.

Encina: I watched him during pre-game shoot around of Game 2 of the PHX/Lakers series and also pregame of one of their regular season games. He is pretty consistent from both sides of the key (freethrow-line extended). He also was shooting some 3 pointers and while not he's not consistent with them yet, I was surprised at how many he did make. Looks like he's trying to extend his range. He was working with Rambis, taking passes and doing turn-around jumpers from both sides of the key (freethrow-line extended) and he hit most of them. Very smooth and fluid movements. I'd almost say graceful. Hope that helped answer your question!
