when i was 16 i worked in a movie theatre and it was great. i got into movies for free and its an easy gig.

Mow/edge lawns, get paper routes, buy/sell baseball cards (do kids still do that???), tell your neighbors that you're down to do some odd jobs for a little bit of cash (eg moving things, sweeping, weeding, washing their car, whatever), etc.

Something else that we used to do to make some bread when we were young was to look for bikes that were in pretty good shape at garage sales or in the Recycler or whatever, buy them, and then paint them, put new pedals and grips on, etc., and resell them.

Try to think of things like that, I'd suggest. When I turned 16, I had already saved up enough doing little stuff like that to buy an old truck off of our neighbor, which made getting a jobby job that much easier.

Maybe offer to help your older or less-computer-savvy neighbors with simple problems they may be having on their systems. Go and get all of the spyware, viruses, etc., off their system for $20 or something.

When I was in high school, I worked part-time at the local YMCA. It was easy as hell. You should call them and find out if they have part-time openings.

When I was 16 I worked in a high school library over summer break. I also taught bass guitar lessions out of my house. 8)

wow!!...teenagers actually want to work??. anyways, busboy at a restaurant is good. thats how i started off. the waiters tip out to the busboys/girls at the end of the night. great way to be multi-tasked also.

Have you tried acting/modeling? 50% to the govt, 10% to an agent and 15% to a blocked trust still probably leaves you some good cash and a jump on a college fund (can tap the trust when you turn 18). There are upfront costs for headshots and SAG initiation fees, but if you can get signed by a reputable agent, you may get 2-3 auditions per week and fairly steady, part-time work. The catch of course is that you cannot dictate or predict the times you'll be working. Have to have a flexible schedule.

Another option is software engineering. It's the kind of thing where you can just hole up, study, and write software until you know what you need to know. Then find off-site work via the internet (CraigsList is great), using the portfolio of work you developed. No one ever has to know how old you are, and you can make ~$50/hr to start for the right languages and problem domains. Again, this is the kind of thing that leans toward the future, rather than just earning gas money in an unskilled job and having to figure out a new career later.

If you do go for the immediate cash (bank teller, retail sales, etc), read Robert Kiyosaki's books so that you can learn how to roll the money into investments that do your working for you, rather than getting stuck in a work/spend cycle.

My first real job (age 15 - this was 1987) was as a bagger at Alpha Beta on the corner of Walnut and Redhill in Tustin. I was not real experienced in what it meant to have a job, and what rights I had, so I worked 2 weeks of 4 to 10 shifts bent over bagging people's groceries without one break. I couldn't take anymore. I quit and got a job working for a family friend at the deli they owned that was on the corner of Walnut and Jeffrey in Irvine. I rode my bike there. I lived in Tustin Meadows (Walnut and Redhill.) That was a decent job, but the best teenage jobs I had were as a telemarketer (Olan Mills, anybody?) and as an employee of Miller's Outpost and Miller's for Kids in the shopping Center at Walnut and Culver. The best jobs are jobs you can find where you can work with cool people. Great co-workers can make a bad job tolerable, and crappy co-workers can make a great job miserable.

I was a lifeguard during the summers of high school. Decent pay, very little output of energy. I swooped up everyone's hours cause it's summer and they wanted to party.

I would suggest finding someone in the real estate industry (loans) who will let you be a jr processor. It's basically a gopher job, but you'll learn the language and southern california is great for real estate.

I also used to have a pool cleaning service during high school.

You can find plenty of under the table jobs at craigslist.org under the gigs section. You can also buy/sell stuff there with no fees, but you should probably ask your folks about that before you start.

If you really want to W O R K and have a job that will kick your butt this summer, but give you good skills for later in life and could blossom into a career that would result in earing more money than you could ever think it would then try construction.

It is hard, hot, dirty, back-breaking awful work. But if you know how to throw a hammer, and pour concrete, lay tile, light electrical, plumbing, roofing, carpentry or finish work, not only will you have a job for life, but if you are smart and driven, you can certianly get your license and open your own business. Then, as a General, you can hire subs to do all of the work, and you just bid the jobs and collect the money. In So-Cal, you might notice that many new homes go for over a Mil, and if you know how to build them, you can make a nice living.

I know it doesn't sound like fun, but if you spend 2-3 summers doing it, you could be on your way.

Either that, or go work in the mall like the rest of your classmates.
