My mom was added to my sister's FamilyShare plan a month ago. Now she'd like to end it without paying a penalty. Is this possible?

Verizon is the worst, followed closely by Sprint. You can cancel but they charge you a $150-$200 cancellation fee.

If you don't want to pay an ETF. You have two choices:

You can either sub-lease your phone at a place like www.celltrade.com
or
Get Verizon to cancel YOU, so they're breaking the contract, not you, by following the instructions at http://roaminghack.blogspot.com/

Check with Verizon... they usually give you a trial window... although, it's usually between 14 - 21 days.
