PostPosted: Tue Aug 08, 2006 2:36 pm    Post subject: Looking for New Phone/PDA

Hey guys, my cell phone has about had it so I've started looking into new phones and wanted to see if there were any recommendations.

I still am under contract with Cingular, and considering most of the people I talk to are also, it makes sense for me to stay with them, so my major requirement is service by Cingular.

Other things I am looking for include:
- Good phone reception, first and foremost
- Good battery life
- Bluetooth enabled
- Ability to do some basic web surfing
- Ability to synch with Outlook - most specifically Outlook contacts
- a QWERTY keyboard would be preferable

My ideal phone would be the Motorola Q, but it's CDMA, so not serviced by Cingular. I've also looked at the Treo's, but frankly the Palm OS scares me a bit. I've heard that you need to download and pay for basic apps, like synching with Outlook.

Right now I'm leaning towards the Cingular 8125: http://reviews.cnet.com/Cingular_8125/4505-6452_7-31732999.html?tag=pop

Anyone have any thoughts on these phones or any other recommendations?

Well I just bought the SLVR L7 yesterday, and so far absolutely LOVE it. I wanted to go with the Razr, but since most of my friends already have it, I decided to try and be a little "different' and go with the L7, no regrets yet, but it's only been a day.

1. Reception is great thus far
2. Battery life is TBD
3. It is bluetooth enabled
4. Unsure about the outlook question
5. It has ITunes, store up to 100 songs. Not that good, but since I only want to use it for workouts, it's a nice fit for me.
6. Good price, $100 after 2 year agreement with Cingular, I don't remember the regular price w/o the contract though.

I wish I could give a better review, but haven't had it for long obviously. But overally it seems like a great phone, looks amazing, has some solid bells and whistles, I recommend it.

Good luck.

Blackberry 8700 is the best phone ever. Meets all the needs you listed above and I got mine for free when I signed a 2 year agreement with cingular (I did it thru amazon but I don't know if they offer it anymore).

As far as web surfing... I'm writing this post from my blackberry.

Here you go:

Everything you need to know about the 8125. I think it's a great phone,
but now I kind of want to sell it because I can't just leave it lying around
when I play ball.

all I have to say is my cingular 8125 is the bomb... the pull out keyboard is such a great feature. I'll never go back to a PDA "cell phone" without one. While obviously I can't type as fast as a normal keyboard... I can type with my thumbs solidly fast. Also the battery life on it is solid for all the stuff and features it has.... and wifi is the bomb.

Thanks for all the recommendations and resources guys. The more I research, the more the 8125 looks like it fits what I am looking for. I'm gonna go play with one first, but looks like the right choice!

Posting on a blackberry 7130C. Same basic machine, just smaller with the suretype keyboard. I'm now faster on suretype than qwerty, and i like the smaller size better.

Either way, for a stable phone and e-mail platform, nothing touches the crackberry. I have friends who have treos, q's and the 8125, and all i hear about are problems (both windows and palm os are problematic, especially with other software). Yeah, they not have some bells and whistles, but blackberries are just bulletproof.
