It’s time to re-think (Reconsider) the Shammond’s signing.

It’s time to re-think the Shammond’s signing.

I’m not happy because of the debacle of the TEAM USA, but it’s something to think about because people always thinking the NBA players are better than the rest of the world. People were asking how a player that spent his time playing in Europe can help the Lakers.

They’re of course talking about Shammond. This guy was the point guard of the great Barcelona team sharing the back court with the excellent Juan Carlos Navarro (the best European player IMO), playing with a guy like Basile.

I remember others asking who in the French team is better than Turiaf. Like every NBA player has to be better than any non-us player.

I think that apart from Dirk, Ginobilli or Gasol, no NBA play has dominated the World Championships. Nash, the two-time NBA MVP, wasn’t there this time. But the last time he played the Olympics in 2000, Makan Djoumassi (French defensive minded player) shot him down easily. Tony Parker, who is a great all-star point guard in the NBA, was dominated 3 years ago but Bullieri (Italian point guard).

Thos exemplas are goods ones in order to put things into perspectives. The rest of the world is evolving and improving, TEAM USA has to be really ready to beat the Argentines, Spain’s, Serbia’s, Greece, etc. It’s funny how every European specialist was sure that the team USA was going to get beat.

I’m a laker fan, so I do believe that Kobe would have helped this team to win it all in Japan, because he is a true player, he is a killer and has experience to play both ends of the floor.

But as a European (even though I was born in Haiti), I’m kind of proud to Europe bring two teams to the finals.

So, guys, Shammond was a very good player in Europe (Spain = great league; Euroleague= very competitive; Barcelona = European top 4). I now believe that he will help us a lot this year.

He was also the MVP, right?

I really hope that your optimism comes through

I actually do believe Shammond is better than anyone here is giving him credit for, and that fans will be pleasantly surprised by him.

People just bich and complain when they don't know someone's current game, as though if they're not familiar with it, it must mean the player sucks. Our self-importance is typical American and it's what gives us a bad reputation around the world. After all, how many times on LG.net alone has someone said, "well, if he hasn't played in the NBA the last few years, he's a piece of crap. Dam that Mitch for wasting the LLE on him!" The pathetic part is that the comment is usually preceded by a question about the player's current game, which clearly means the poster doesn't even know his game but has already concluded he sucks just because he's been playing in Europe.

Shammond can hit 3, finish decently, and run a team. However, his D is still as bad as it was in his first NBA stint. He has the tools to be a defender, but will he give himself up as a defender, or will he worry about offense first and foremost?

The difference is the style of play that Europe employs versus the NBA. In the NBA, it is about big names. Wade gets to the free throw line while sitting on the bench. The Jordan rules. Run and gun versus disciplined and trained professionals.

The NBA players could do that, but the difference between NBA basketball and international basketball makes it so NBA players can't easily dominate in the worlds, but also international players can't dominate in the NBA the way they do internationally.

There is also this idea running through a lot of people's minds that the NBA is the top basketball league in the world, the end-all be-all for professional basketball. This is true, but only in the USA. Just like MLS is just one of many soccer leagues and FIFA rules over all, the NBA is just one of many, and FIBA should hold the same grasp as FIFA does. That will never fly, as NBA owners and Stern don't want to ever answer to someone else, but if they truly want to dominate the world in basketball the way Brazil does in fútbol, then the NBA needs to do a better job of working with FIFA, rather than just tossing some peanuts at them every four years.

Until we actually see Williams play, we can't say one way or the other... all we can do is trust that Laker Management made the right decision (unless you actually watched him play in Europe).

The difference is the officiating. The NBA ia alot more physical. You need your PG to be a good defender also. Euros are not there defensively. Unless your name is Dwanye Wade you are not going to get the same calls the Euros get.

But unlike soccer, the World Championships is not considered the 'ultimate' goal for American ball players,.. a NBA Title is. That the difference; in the soccer world, the ultimate goal is to win the World Cup.... that's not true in basketball, at least from an American ball player point of view...

Americans never react to a win in the World Championships like this:

Quote:
Greece Celebrates
ATHENS, Greece -- Thousands of Greeks gathered in the streets, waved flags and honked car horns to celebrate the 101-95 upset victory over the United States.

"This is the biggest thing we've ever done," former Greek star Panayiotis Fasoulas said. "The Americans are the most talented players but we have a better team. Right now we're the best in the world. ... Beating the U.S. is more important than the final."

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis cut short scheduled meetings to watch the end of the game and expressed gratitude to the Greek team.

"I wonder if a 'thank you' is enough, but I feel the need to say it twice over to [coach] Panagiotis Yannakis and his guys," Karamanlis said in a statement.

Chanting "Lift the Cup," fans waved Greece's blue-and-white flags, blared car horns as midday parties sprang up in Athens and Thessaloniki, Greece's second-largest city.

Traffic information screens flashed the final score, as motorists abandoned their cars to join celebrating crowds. Teenagers set off firecrackers and waved flags on mo-peds as they headed to the center of Athens.

-- The Associated Press

But we will do that for an NBA Championship. The WBC is not a priority in this country... at least not right now.

Hats off the Greece.... they were the better team today.

BTW... we'll be coming for that ass in 08!!!!

That was sort of my point, though I did not emphasize it, nor did I make it clear. If the NBA players want to dominate world competition, they need to become more involved with FIBA, and train their players to be able to play the international game.

If the NBA, its owners, its players, and fans, don't care about world competition or celebrating it, then these same results will continue for a long time to come.

Not so sure about that... even Kobe said today's Eurpoean B-Ball is a physical game.

Quote:
European game is now more physical than the NBA, believe it or not, they let a lot of fouls go these days in international ball,.. hand checking and bumping in the lane....

I would think he will be a first guard option off the bench, and generally those guys are thought of as more instant offense players than lock down players.

Our PG defense will be frustrating to watch again this year

You know, the Euro leauge is a LOT more physical than it used to be- those Zebra's really let a lot contact go under the basket and they don't have the stupid hand check rule. They call the travel a lot more, and I actually like that, but it is not the pansy league anymore at all.

Those new players are a lot bigger than they used to be. I just got done watching Ronny battle with that Baby Shaq guy from Greece- that KID IS MASSIVE!- freaking 6'11, 320 lbs, and about as wide as an ox.

Then expect these same results. The only reason the NBA got involved in the first place was to increase their marketing audience. If not for that, we would still be sending college players. The Worlds and Olympics will always be secondary to the NBA title.

I don't think that the NBA is more physical at all then Euro basketball. In europe you have a lot of hard fouls. it's tough to play here in Europe.

Why is the meat of the post title in quotation marks, as though it was uttered by someone that mattered. I click it expecting to see who in the Laker FO is having second thoughts and there is no link, just some marginally knowledgeable fan offering his opinion. What is the deal with the misleading titles lately?

Sounds like Laker Management got this one right, like they did with Smush. Can't wait until camp opens... I'm very curious to see how the roster and the depth charts look, especially at the PG spot.

The freaking guy is built like a mini-Karl Malone, he has MASSIVE GUNS. I really find it hard to believe that a guy who is that buffed out- he must hit the gym everyday to keep his muscle mass up like that- would have poor defensive habbits. He must be a hard worker, he was the the MVP of their playoff series. Guys like that must be able to play some D- at least he should be an upgrade over Smush.

I am hoping that he has shed his bad habbits over there in Europe. It appears that he really found his game, all of that playing time in pressure situations has got to help him.

I am not un-happy with this signing, I just would have rather gotten Banks who is already a proven NBA defender.
