|
|
I'm going to be staying for a week at the Hilton Waikoloa on Oahu. Does anyone have any suggestions on things to do?
Question: Should I rent a car for the entire week?
Question: How easy (or advisable) is it to island hop?
Any tips are appreciated. |

My suggestion: KEEP YOUR DAMN HAWAII VACATION TO YOURSELF!
Nah - seriously - have fun. Can't say much about what to do on Oahu, or whether it's worth it to hop to the other islands, as I've only been to Maui. _________________ I got a fever....and the only prescription is more cowbell.

First, you need to make sure you know exactly where you're staying at. The Hilton Waikoloa is on the Big Island of Hawaii, not on Oahu. The Hilton Hawaiian Village is the one on Oahu - in Waikiki. I'd suggest you have a rental car for the duration of your stay. It's probably cheaper than having to depend on a cab. The Big Island is much more laid back than Oahu - not as much people, no freeways, no public bus system. Definately go island hoping. A lot of people go to Hawaii, but only stay on the main island, Oahu. I like Oahu, but here's more to Hawaii than just that one island. Maui is cool - definitely check out Maui. |

I hear prostitution is rampant there. Not a suggestion, just saying.
I must be reading too many Lakers999 posts. |

Like underdogg said make sure where your accommodations are at... big difference between the two.
I'm kind of busy now but hit me up if I don't respond after you specify which island you're staying at. I'd be happy to help out. |

If you are staying on Oahu, I recommend getting a car and taking a drive to the North Shore and having lunch at the shrimp truck in Kahuku.

On Oahu there is a great Thai restaraunt named Keo's.
It's down the street from the Nike store. Check it out!
Also if your hotel offers the Day on the Bay trip, it's worth it and you get to see a lot of the island without that "where the hell am I?" feeling.
The atmosphere is laid back and soothing, so try not to be stressed. You don't want to waste the precious Hawaii time.
I've never island hopped. I've either stayed in or Oahu or the Big Island. _________________ Stop crying and start doing.

Cool! What kind of things are you looking at doing?
You can get neighbor island trips for ~$40 one way... as there is a price war going on... used to be >$100 one way Maui is the next most developed... the others are really great for simple, slow paced island life... all of them have their own character and things to do/see... depends on what you want.
Lanny's advice about the shrimp truck is a good one.... also along the way is matsumoto's shave ice... waimea bay, pipeline, haleiwa town... the Polynesian Cultural Center is out there as is Kualoa Ranch... Turtle Bay resort/golf courses are there as well. The north shore is way less crowded and developed than Waikiki.
Ala Moana shopping center is a short jaunt from your hotel... great eating places... was once (long ago) the largest mall in the country. |

Check out Ala Moana Shopping Center for sure. Go hiking in the bamboo forest. You'll see what Hawaii used to be and smell some of the best air around. Look for some passion fruit along the trails. Check out North Shore. Rent some snorkling gear and go to Sharks Cove (near Sunset Beach) or Hanauma Bay. Go to the Sheraton Moana Surfrider Banyan Veranda and watch the sunset while drinking your favorite drink. Don't forget Zippy's for some good grinds, they're usually open 24 hours. L & L plate lunch on Liliha, get the Chili mix-plate. You can rent kayaks in Waikiki for about $10. Or go to the Windward side and go boogey boarding. Sandy's is great, but watch out for rip currents.
Go to Kau'ai if you want for a couple days to see the true beauty of Hawaii.
If you go to the Big Island rent a Harley and just ride. Check out the volcano at night. Lots to do and see in the Big Island. If you like driving or riding that is the place to be.
Oh, and be aware of crime. Property crime is one of the highest in the nation in Hawaii. Guard everything or they'll grow legs. |

I definetely suggest renting a car and going to the North Shore; too bad the Kahuku Sugar Mill closed down. Also, check out Sea Life Park (if it's still open) and go to Ala Moana. _________________ "Look Dad, I did it". "Look Mommy, I can ride my bike without the training wheels" and so on and so on. What kind of recreational activities do you like?
-Oh eat these donut-like sweet bread called malasadas
-Go to a Luau, it may be hokie, but the food is great, and the women dancers ...the ones at the Polynesian cultural center and at Paradise cove are nice
*Definately island hop if possible...Kuaui is my favirote of the other islands, kayak the Na Pali coast, and maybe take a boat ride out to the forbidden island, or go to the Queens bath. |

And Pizza Kauai right across the street in Hanalei. Just got back a couple weeks ago. Kauai might be the only place in America where you can see homeless surfers wearing long skirts living with their family (wife and kids) in a park on the beach. |

Be prepared for a relaxed pace. Enjoy your time on whatever island you are visiting. It's all good. just got back from Oahu and maui.
maui- do some snorkeling and check out Aloha Mixed plate in Lahaina. You need a car there...we rented one for $26 total including tax.
Oahu...definitely check out PCC, go to the North shore...matsumoto shaved ice is good..I hear.
Go to Zippy's..and Yummy's Korean BBQ- eat Meat Jun. those are good lunch places...
for dinner..check out Chai's island bistro, Kobe Steak house..(of course)
Happy Trails has better horseback rides than Kualoa ranch. but no atv's.
island hopping is fairly easy...but you'll have to buy sunblock after you get there..unless you want to check luggage...we just went for the day. |

Thanks for the tips.
I'd love to do some snorkeling and lots of eating. Maybe check out a luau.
Other than that I want to have very little planned so that I can just chill.
Thanks again. |

You should get to hanauma bay... it's a sanctuary for fishes... they'll swim right up to your face... eating won't be a problem... chillin', now that's what a vacation should be all about (i need a vacation ) .... |

if you're starting on Oahu you definately need a car and head towards the north shore, stop by dole also on your way there. Waimea has great waterfalls, and if it's a day where Waimea is more "bay" than surf... go rock diving.
Pearl Harbor is another must. Gotta stop by there. If you see "shaved ice" in a locals looking area... stop and have some... it'll be well worth it. Beach, sun, and sand it the rest of the way... at the most remote spots you can find. Oahu can definately have the "tourist trap" feel if you don't know where to go.
If you have a military ID... goto K-bay one day and chill at their beaches. _________________ How can I get a copy of a Laker game played on Sunday, March 11, 2001 Sonics/Lakers? If you know PM me please

- HH is nice. My favorite place to stay on Waikiki.
- When you're at the north shore, head over to Giovanni's Shrimp Truck. It's by a gas station, and not by the red shirt shop.
- Shark's Cove is great for kids, and it's incredibly calm.
- Hanauma Bay. I still go there everytime I'm on Oahu. But I go just once. This last time, I saw a turtle, just chilling on the reef, chilling, and eating for a while.
- Ala Moana has one of the best food courts around, even compared to the mainland.
- Go to Buppy's to get really good mochi ice cream, or get them at the local store. Good stuff.
- Maui is great, but dang, I'm getting miffed with traffic there these days. The section between the Maui Ocean Center to Lahaina is horrible. In the afternoons, you could ride a bicycle faster than driving your car. All the timeshares just hoses them. If you want to stay on Maui, stay near Kihe to skip most of the traffic.
- Big Island. I'm thinking of either going there or Maui next year in August or the Big Island for a week. (Probably another week on Oahu just because). I'm heading there to hopefully catch a good Perseids meteor shower for next year. I've only been to the Big Island once, so I'm not sure what there is to do there except at the resorts, flutes, and the Macademia farms. So I'm humming and hawwing to either go back to Maui (I do like Kihe and Lahaina a lot.) or head back to the Big Island to go exploring. Any ideas for interesting things to do on the big island that is toddler friendly? |
