Energy off the Bench... Ronny Turiaf and Jordan Farmar sparked the Lakers with a savvy, high-energy effort off the bench. Both closed out the game with big plays on their way to the 104-101 preseason victory over Seattle.

I know I've hyped Farmar quite a bit in my Summer League coverage. I had tried to point out the kinds of skills (physical and mental) that will translate to make him into a good pro. Those who didn't have the opportunity to check him out in this offense finally got to see some of things I've yapped about. Of course, it's just preseason and there will still be those who have Tierre Brown-itis...but it should be obvious that he is a different player -- on both ends of the court. There will be some drama this preseason in a lot of areas, but one is just how much will the Lakers play Farmar this season? Stay tuned.

With Andrew Bynum tweaking his ankle in the first half and the Lakers playing it safe, Turiaf got some extended run. He didn't disappoint, including two key scores in the last minute of the game.

The Lakers as a team still had plenty of issues on both ends trying to play together. A few miscued passes and some poor rotations on D are to be expected at this point. Radmanovic and Evans seemed to find some comfort level in the offense. Shammond had a few spots, but clearly wasn't playing at the level of Farmar.

Odom -- -- I think it's probably a bit difficult for Lamar to get into any kind of rhythm with these types of minutes unless he jumps out quickly when he starts his stints. It just seemed like he was about to get warmed up all night. He scored 4 points on 2-5 shooting, had 2 boards, 2 assists and 2 steals in 18 minutes. He made a nice change of direction in transition to draw a foul on Wilcox for FTs, he missed both. He got blocked on a layup attempt. He and Radmanovic switched (you might see a lot of that), then LO drew a clear-out foul on Rashard. He rattled in a fade going from weak to strong across the lane. He grabbed a board, pushed the ball up in traffic and bounced a pass to Radmanovic who had to be fouled. In probably his play of the game, he deflected a pass on D, pushed it up with one man on him and Swift trying to chase him, LO then put on the speed down the lane and finished the layup. Not much to get into regarding Lamar in this game.

Kwame -- -- Kwame looked a little more like the player we saw at the end of last season. Seattle really didn't have anyone who could bang with Kwame in the post and he ended up drawing a number of fouls. He had some nice box outs early on the defensive glass and ended up with 4 boards in 21 minutes to go along with 11 points on 5-7 shooting. He also had a couple of nice assists in the game. He bricked a face-up jumper badly from 16 feet to start. He then set up Radmanovic out of the post with a nice bounce pass for FTs. He overpassed in the lane and turned it over. He got backscreened with no help and gave up an alley-oop. He drew FTs on a nice drive and dish by Vlad Rad, unfortunately he airballed one FT by about two feet. He backed down Sene and scored an easy layup. He powered in an And-1 layup off a transition pass from McKie, he missed the FT. He whipped an interior feed to Turiaf for an And-1. Great, quick read as he saw Farmar cut baseline from the weakside and Kwame quickly zipped a 16-foot pass under the hoop for the And-1 layup. In the second half, he stole the ball in the backcourt, then took an entry feed shortly later, gathered himself, headfaked and hit a jumphook. He drew a couple fouls on Petro who couldn't hang with Kwame. He then overpowered Sene who came in for Petro and scored an easy layup. He dunked off a two-man sequence with Shammond, getting the ball back in the middle of the lane and finishing strong. No fumbles in this one from Kwame.

Smush -- -- He didn't see a whole lot of time in this one, just 6 minutes to be exact to go with his 6 points on 2-2 shooting. He drained a catch-and-shoot three from the wing on his first shot. He and Radmanovic teamed up again off a high pinch post and Smush hit his next catch-and-shoot three. That helped pull us out of a quick hole we had dug for ourselves.

Radmanovic -- -- Vlad Rad's shooting was off (1-8 from the floor, 1-3 from three and just 3-6 from the line), but he tried to show some of his mobility by attacking a bit more. He finished with 6 points, 4 boards and 3 assists in 17 minutes. One thing you might have noticed was how well he moved the ball. He's not the type of player to stall the offense. If he does have a shot or is not going to attack, he will quickly make a pass. He didn't give Luke much run for his money as the starting SF at this point, but it's early still. On the first defensive possession, he reached in the post against Wilcox and fouled him. He missed open three top of the arc. He attacked in transition and drew FTs against Wilcox, made one FT. Nice help D to deflect a pass for a turnover. Strong cut out of the Tri and he drew FTs when Kwame found him, he made one. He found Smush for back-to-back threes, one off a high pinch post handoff, the other on a swing pass. He took Lewis off the dribble and dished under the hoop for Kwame who drew the FTs. He kept an offensive board alive off a missed FT for another possession (he nearly had another one earlier). Lamar then found him in the corner and Vlad drilled the three. He missed a jumper from the top of the key. He didn't attack off a nice dish from McKie, then he had the ball slapped away. He kept another offensive board alive for a Laker possession. He bricked a turnaround against the shotclock, hitting the top off the board. He missed a layup on a nice attack, putting it on the floor through some traffic. He missed a jumper popping out behind a screen from LO. He missed an open wing three. We got the ball back and then Radmanovic was promptly swatted on a layup attempt. Horrible entry post pass and it was stolen (that kind of pass seems to be typical for players getting used to the Tri), Vlad then fouled in transition. Nice job running the floor and LO found him with a bounce pass for FTs. Hopefully, his shot will fall in the next one.

Evans -- -- Another solid effort by Evans, this time covering Ray Allen for a bit early on. He played 13 minutes and shot 1-3 for 5 points. He had 1 board, 1 assist and 1 turnover. He missed a putback dunk, but nice hustle. Caught on double screen and gave up layup to Allen. He missed a short baseline jumper. He busted out in transition on his next possession and got clobbered for two FTs, he made both. Back in, late in the game, Evans showed some more fourth-quarter shooting with a three on the wing.

Walton -- -- Looking a little leaner and possibly quicker on D out there, Luke put together a very good game. He scored 10 points in 20 minutes on 5-8 shooting and grabbed 3 boards, dished 3 assists and came up with 2 steals. He played tough on both ends of the court. With Luke and Farmar both on the court at the same time, the team should be able to work the ball for some good looks and closer scores. The ball movement and fluidity of the offense looked smooth with nothing really compromised in this one on the D end. He even stuck with Damien Wilkins on a few defensive plays. He zipped a nice pass under the hoop to Cook, but Cook pulled it out instead of going up strong. He hit a pop out baseline jumper. He missed a turnaround jumper from the midpost. He scored in transition, using his body well to fend off the defender. He swished a baseline jumper standing on the three line. He swiped the ball from his man with some quick hands, then fed Pinnock for a breakaway dunk. Good D on Wilkens to force an airball. Just as Stu is saying it's a bad fast break (as it was overloaded with two men on one side, Cook in the middle and no one on the other side), Walton cut to the overload then sent a pass to Cook under the hoop for a layup. Luke set up Turiaf for FTs after working the two-man game with Farmar. He picked his man in the corner for a steal, then threw an outlet to Farmar for the breakaway dunk. He cut across the lane, took the entry feed from Cook and sank one of his fades from a few feet away. He attacked, pulled it back and then hit another fade, this time from about 12 feet at the elbow. Late in the game, he got caught in the air trying to shoot with a man on him after our offense fell apart and we blew a key possession. Nice game overall, however.

McKie -- -- Well, there was a McKie sighting in this game. A long one. He played 22 minutes and scored 1 points on 0-1 shooting. He and Shammond had the same impact on the game, which wasn't much. On the first sub of the night, McKie came in for Evans. He missed a jumper from the top of the arc. Starting the second half, he attacked off the dribble with the clock low and drew FTs from Allen, he made one. He may be a vet presence and serviceable defensively, but I think these appear to be the kind of minutes we will get from him.

Cook -- -- Cook had a strong offensive quarter in the fourth, but was also a bit of a liability in the post on the other end. He put up some good numbers, though, in 23 minutes. He scored a team-high 16 points on 7-10 shooting (2-2 from three) and he pulled down 6 boards. He had trouble in the post with Collison, who scored 20 points in 24 minutes. Cook drilled a quick catch-and-shoot three from the wing on his first attempt of the game. Sloppy footwork in the high post and he got a travel call. Good D on Colison on one sequence when tried to post Cook up and Brian forced a three-second call. He faked the shot, worked down along the baseline, headfaked and scored a layup. He drained a three from the top of the arc. He hit Farmar going back door, the D collapsed, Farmar gave him a return feed and Cook sank the 12-footer. He scored a layup on the break as Luke found him with a pretty pass. Collison scored a layup in the post as Cook got into bad position. Cook then got an And-1 facial by Wilkens in transition on the next play. He faked, took a dribble to get some space and hit the 20-footer. He got beat badly again in the post by Collison on the next play. On the other end, Cook for some reason faked like he was going to cut to the ball on a standard pressure-release cut in the Tri, Walton then threw it where he thought Cook was going and it went right to the defender for a dunk the other way. He drained an open three from the top of the key off a pick and pop with Farmar. Farmar and Cook botched a backcourt sequence as Farmar got doubled and threw the ball to where Cook had been and it went out of bounds. Great game offensively, but he still had issues with his interior D.

Farmar -- -- After the game, Farmar said the biggest adjustment right now is not knowing how much he will play from night to night. Keep battling, playing games like this, and he better get some minutes. Jordan finished with 10 points on 4-9 shooting and 5 assists with 1 turnover in 19 minutes. He was called for a couple of fouls and also came up with a 2 steals. He was very slippery on screens tonight. Watch how well he plays screens compared to the other guards. On his first defensive test of the night he put on some great D, smothering his man on a drive and turnaround, forcing a brick. Farmar missed a wing jumper. He attacked strong, kicked it out, went to the corner where he got it back and drilled the three. He ran the screen-roll with Turiaf, set him up with a beautiful no-look return feed for a dunk. Then, he promptly stole the inbounds pass cutting through traffic to intercept it. He missed a jumper trying to beat the shotclock. Great backdoor cut from the weakside, the kind of off-the-ball play which makes him such a good Tri PG, Kwame found him for an And-1 layup that he had to flip over his head (Jordan made the FT). Nice behind-the-back feed to Turiaf off a screen, which led to FTs by Green as Turiaf made the next pass. He missed a heave at the first-half buzzer. He came in to start the fourth and finished out the game. He missed a three, not getting completely balanced before shooting. Great backdoor cut, he got the pass, drew the D, then went behind his back to Cook for an open 12-footer. He missed a layup with his lefthand that he should have had. Nice two-man game with Luke, and Luke set up Turiaf for FTs. Great help D, coming from behind to steal the ball, he then quickly found Turiaf bolting down court for the And-1 score. Farmar then busted out on the break when Walton picked his man and Farmar threw down for the lead. He picked up a perimeter foul, getting too tight on his man at midcourt. He worked off the two-man with Cook, brought the ball back to the weakside where he found Evans for a wing three. After the offense stalled, Farmar got the ball back, glanced at the clock and then quickly worked the two-man game with Cook who hit an open three. Shortly later, Farmar worked it again, this time instead of feeding Cook, Farmar exploded to the hoop and scooped a floater high over Swift for the score. Ball game. I don't see any reason why he shouldn't continue to bring it and this is why Mike and I think he'll probably end up the starter next year. Jordan will be trying to make the case on a nightly basis until it happens.

Bynum -- -- It looked like the Lakers played it safe with Bynum who tweaked his ankle a little in the first staff. Prior to that he had a couple moments and might have put together a double digit game. He came in for Kwame at the 3:40 mark of the first and played 10 minutes, scoring 6 points on 2-2 shooting and grabbing a couple boards. He altered a jumpshot in the paint shortly after entering the game. He got caught in the air on a head fake by Watson and we gave up a layup. He forced Swift into a brick in the post. He got called for a moving pick on an inbounds play. He got good position in the lane, worked for better position, banged and was fouled at the front of the rim, he drilled both FTs. He ran over a screener under the hoop for a foul. He nearly made a nice interior bounce pass to Cook, but it was picked off. He sealed Swift well as Swift tried to go for a steal, Drew caught the entry feed, turned and stretched for a throwdown. He scored an easy layup under the hoop (he probably should have hammered it home), but he came down the court limping. They pulled him out with what was called a mild ankle sprain, something that he probably would have played on if it wasn't the preseason.

Turiaf -- -- Turiaf strugged from the line all night, with a Shaq-like performance. Rambis left him in on the final possession up by one. At this point, Ronny was 1-6. Naturally, he got the inbounds and was fouled. He stepped up and knocked both clutch freebies down. Nicely done. Ronny played his game, bringing energy and effort and some nice finishing around the hoop. He finished with 15 points on 6-8 shooting, 2 boards and 1 block in a team-high 25 minutes. On his first score, he flagged down a speedy interior feed from Kwame and scored an And-1 layup with his off hand. He missed the FT, but got back his own rebound. He dunked of a beautiful two-man game with Farmar. He shuffled his feet in transition for a travel. He scored a layup off an interior feed from Green. Nice double team on Swift with LO to force a turnover. He cut from the weakside and was fouled trying to finish around Swift, he missed both FTs. Nice outlet between defenders to Green who dunked in transition off a steal. He got blocked trying to score over Swift in the post. He charged in transition on the next time down the floor. Nice offensive board, but an even better finish quickly attacking Swift and banking over his outstretched arm. He was fouled off a feed from Luke, and he finally made a FT. He busted out on the break shortly later, took the outlet from Farmar, scored an And-1 and screamed to the crowd, he missed the FT. With a minute left and the Lakers up by 5, Ronny got the ball in the post, dropstepped Swift and powered in a layup. Excellent game by our hustling bigman.

Pinnock -- 8) -- Pinnock scored 2 points on 1-4 shooting in 13 minutes. He also dished a couple of assists, pulled down 2 boards, tallied a steal and blocked a shot...showing some of his well rounded game. He bricked a jumper badly on his first attempt. He busted out and dunked when Luke picked his man and fed Pinnock. Nice attack in transition that probably would have led to a layup if not for an off-the-ball foul. Excellent D on Gelabale on back-to-back possessions, contesting a jumper on one and forcing a tough pass off the dribble on the other. Pinnock missed a runner off the glass. He had a better game than McKie and Wafer, but not quite better than Green in that battle for the roster spot.

Green -- -- The energy and hustle that he always brings was there. The outside shot and D (against a tough match up in Rashard Lewis) was not there. Green still finished with 8 points on 3-6 shooting in just 11 minutes. He also had 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 block. Great hustle to throw back down a missed shot by Farmar and get the crowd going. He faced up at the right elbow, attacked to his left, got contact and hit a 5-footer. Nice extension trying to throwdown, and he drew FTs, making both. He tracked down LO's man from behind and swatted him in the post. He fed Turiaf with an interior feed for a score. He airballed a 15-footer from the sideline. Rashard scored back-to-back baskets on Green, one an And-1. He missed a FT fade on a flash from the weaskside. He missed a wide open jumper from about 18 feet, third miss in a row at the tail end of the third quarter. He then gave up FTs off the ball to Rashard. He knocked a ball loose on help D, busted down court, got the outlet from Turiaf and dunked.

Shammond -- -- It sure seemed like Farmar had a ton more veteran savvy than Shammond did in similar minutes. Of course, Farmar has played in the triangle a bit more than Shammond. But defensively, Farmar still looked like more of a player. Shammond scored 2 points on 1-3 shootin, had 4 assists with 2 turnovers and 1 steal. He'll be better with more time, but the rookie is gunning for him and Smush. Shammond came in midway through the first for Smush and promptly had the ball passed to him by Seattle for a steal. He missed a catch-and-shoot three from the wing. He got caught in the air in the lane, couldn't make an interior feed and gave it up. He tried to pass it again under the hoop and turned it over. He shotput in a wing jumper off a pinch post. He got caught in the air defensively on the perimeter and gave up two FTs to Watson. Nice setup of Kwame off the weakside two-man sequence, he drew the D, then hit Kwame for the two-hand dunk (hopefully, that's the kind of play we will see more of as he gets used to the offense).

Wafer -- -- He threw a pass away in transition, looked like he thought Green was going to go up for an oop. He and Green miscued again on the perimeter on the next play and it led to a dunk on the other end. Nice burst of speed around a wicked screen by LO, Von collapsed the D, found Green who hit Turiaf for a score. He made an aggressive attack in transition and drew FTs, making both.

Rambis -- -- With 9.8 left and the lead by one, we called a timeout. We barely got the ball in to Cook and he was fouled (foul to give). We used another timeout. Leaving Turiaf in the game at this point would have been a regular season mistake? It was a bad decision as he was 1 for 6 at the moment from the line and struggling. So, we inbounds the ball to him. And, wouldn't you know it, he sinks both... Lakers gave up a lot of points in the paint early, too many layups. In the first half they gave up 34 points in the paint and 59% shooting... They were sharing the ball nicely in the first half, with 15 assists and we finished with 29 for the game... The coaches felt there was a big difference in energy by the guys that were out there late in the first half (Farmar, Turiaf, Green). They got some extended run later... Rambis started McKie and Shammond in the second half, instead of Smush and Evans, switching up his starting lineup at halftime again... With 32.4 and up by three, the Lakers called a timeout and botched the possession, turning the ball over on an iso fade attempt by Luke. It led to a score on the other end. Not sure what we were trying to draw up there. Farmar probably should have kept the ball in his hands...

Oh, a DB recap! One of the things I badly missed during this long off-season. Glad to know Jordan was given more minutes this time & Bynum somewhat settling down. Also pleased to learn that Vlad showed activity on both ends. Now if we could only get rid of the injury bug that keeps hitting us.

Thanks DB!

Thanks DB!

Farmar and Turiaf left quite an impression. It's quite likely that both will contribute this season. I liked Cook's performance too. In addition to his offense, he led the Lakers in rebounds with 6.

Thanks DB. And all is right with the world again...

Before last night, I could never have imagined such a thing as a 'poor man's Tierre Brown'... and then I saw Shammond Williams. He appears to be all that Brown wasn't, minus the sweet crossover and with even worse decision making (if that's possible). We can only hope that his fugly shotput, nee jumpshot starts falling, because I have a feeling he's going to see minutes; and I heard yesterday (I think it was Spero Dedes) that Kupchak has been trying to sign this dude since last summer!?! Snake eyes again, Mitch.

Quote:
With Luke and Farmar both on the court at the same time, the team should be able to work the ball for some good looks and closer scores.

Hear, hear. Luke looks ridiculously confident and at ease out there, both on offense and most surprisingly, defense. Picking balls in the post; chasing loose balls; baseball outlet passes; knocking down threes with regularity; and now he's hitting that mid-post turnaround fall-away like he invented it. He's become quadruple the player than he was two years ago.

As for Farmar, while you were more impressed with his 'D' than I was, I've been convinced since draft night that he'll be far and away the best PG Kobe has ever played with (says as much about recent Laker PG history as is does about Farmar though, unfortunately), and he's done nothing in either the SPL or two preseason games to disabuse me of that opinion; he's only reinforced it. Man it's nice to see a real freaking point guard on the floor for this team again! How long has it been? Derek Harper in 98-99?!?

Now if Mitch can just find a way to clear out his scrub (Shammond) for his ace (Farmar), this team might be in business.

Thanks DB. I can't wait to see Farmar whipping those great passes to a cutting Kobe.

Oh yeah, one more thing:

Kwame's explosiveness really seems to have returned; he was getting off the floor very well last night both jumping for rebounds and going to the basket. Now I know part of that was his avoidance of his patented 'fall-away layup', but still, his hops much more resembled his early Washington days last night. I know last year he talked about having a certain unevenness to his leg strength, and fortunately, that appears to have been corrected.

BTW, jeremy snow: I know you've mentioned before that periodically Mitch will return your phone calls. Does he ever respond to your emails?

It was a solid game last night. DB summarized it up pretty well. I think Farmar has the chance to play more minutes than Shammond this year. I didn't like the way SHammond played. He got caught on a lot of jump passing. Something that only really works for Nash. Luke looked really good out there. I think Luke and Farmar is a pretty good tandem out there because they will get the ball to the right places.
Turiaf is another character withing itself. Its like someone said here, its Madsend, but he can play ball. LO looked liked LO and Kwame had flashes of last year.
Overall, I was impressed. Or maybe because I've been Laker deprived all summer long. We'll see.... I am excited about this year though.

He was very slippery on screens tonight. Watch how well he plays screens compared to the other guards.

That was exactly what stood out most to me about Farmar last night. Very impressive.
