Kill the Headlights, Throw it in Neutral... The Lakers survived a bit of offensive coasting in the last 3 minutes trying to run down the clock, and they managed to pull out the 99-95 win over the Nets. The game featured some oddities like the lights going out early and KCal biffing the tape delay by not showing the last 14 seconds with the Lakers up by 3 points and New Jersey with the ball.

In case you missed it, Vince Carter missed a three to tie the game. Kobe secured the board and hit a free throw to ice it.

Another strong performance by the bench, who chipped in with 42 points. Bynum and Evans were key in the prior game on both ends. Again, they stepped up and covered for Kwame and Luke. Throw in some great play by Jordan Farmar (who outplayed fellow rookie Marcus Williams), and you've got another nice road win.

Early on, the Lakers were giving up too many easy hoops, many of which came off of turnovers and poor transition D. The Nets capitalized on 19 turnovers, coverting them to 29 points on the night.

Kobe -- -- Kobe has been fighting off an upper upper respiratory infection, and it has shown a little in the past couple of games with his energy. Tonight, he looked to set up others quite a bit and the offense seemed to flow well. He went for a season-high 11 assists, scored 21 points on 4-13 shooting (11-12 from the line), and he pulled down 6 boards in 40 minutes. He did a good job setting up his bigman all night. Whether it was for Cook or Vlad on the perimeter or getting some good looks for Bynum and Kwame in the paint. Early on, he attacked, drew the D, then threw a no-look pass behind his head to where Cook stationed himself at the three line for a score. He missed a wing jumper on his first attempt more than 8 minutes into the game. He worked a tough two-man sequence with Bynum out of tight space in the corner and hit Bynum for a layup. He scored his first points in transition, knocking down an open three. He drained a wing jumper standing on the three line. He drew some "ooh's" from the crowd with a dribbling exhibition to draw the D, then kicked it to Vlad for the three. He attacked and fed Vlad under the hoop for FTs. He missed a wing jumper, then drained a long wing three in semi-transition on his next attempt. He hit Luke with a return feed on an inbounds after drawing two defenders and Luke dunked. He attacked the baseline and drew contact under the hoop for two FTs. He crossed over Carter, attacked, drew contact and hit a couple FTs. He had 12 points at the half. He ran the two-man with Cook and set him up for a three. He hit Smush on the break for a layup. He threw a high entry to Kwame, who scored easily over the help defenders. He drew a whistle for a phantom foul on Carter. He picked up his fourth foul with a minute left in the third and had to sit. He had an adventure in ball handling, getting into the lane, losing it several times, only to come out with it and still be hounded by two defenders, he then drew FTs on a shot attempt and made both. He drew an easy call on a strip attempt with 1 second on the shot clock and made both FTs. He hit a late FT when fouled after grabbing a board.

Walton -- -- The more athletic players in Davis and Jefferson have given Luke some problems in the past game. Evans has done a much better job defensively against them. (Reminds me of the Rick Fox/Devean George combo, in that regard). Luke scored just 4 points on 2-6 shooting, grabbed 6 boards and had 1 assist in 24:44 of action. He posted up and hit his fade on the baseline. He was letting Jefferson get too much penetration early, causing fouls to help defenders and Phil sat him for Evans. Good hustle to pull down an offensive board in traffic and reset the offense. He threw away a pass on a drive. He dunked off a return feed from Kobe under the hoop. He missed a baseline jumper.

Smush -- -- Solid minutes from Smush. He and Farmar combined for 23 points and 6 assists at the PG spot tonight. Smush scored 13 of those on 5-11 shooting (2-4 from three) and dished 1 assist in 28:45 of action. The Lakers have held it together at PG spot in the last couple of games. (Kidd had 16 points and 9 assists, which is right near his career averages). Smush drained a long three after we cycled through the offense on our first possession. He fed Drew in transition for a score. He split the double off a Kwame screen (rarely see Smush do that), then drew contact in the lane and got the And-1 to drop, he made the FT. He got jobbed by the officials on a strip on Carter. He attacked Kidd to start the second half and hit a floater over him. He hit a three over a bigman who mismatched against him. He scored a layup in transition.

Kwame -- -- The PG and C spots are key for the Lakers as we've really had to live off some tag-teaming. Drew and Kwame combined for 18 points on 8-11 shooting. Kwame scored 8 of those on 4-5 shooting, but he only managed 2 boards in his 20:23. The Lakers didn't get hurt quite as bad as the previous game by Kwame not shotblocking, but Drew definitely anchored the paint better again. Early on Kwame threw back down a missed layup with authority. Out of a timeout, the Lakers set up a nice misdirection play, they ball reversed to Kwame as he sealed his man and scored a layup. He attacked quickly on a spin and banked in an And-1, he the airballed the FT by at least two feet (one of the worst airballs I've seen from the line). He scored a layup off a high entry feed from Kobe. He was called for a weak blocking foul against Carter, as it looked like he beat him to the spot.

Cook -- -- Cook got the start and hit the boards to tie a career-high 11 rebounds in 17 minutes. He pulled down a number of early offensive rebounds at the start of the game that helped the Lakers to get off to a good start. I thought they should have milked Cook's hand a little bit more at times in this game as he looked to be trouble for the Nets any time he got the rock. He scored 11 points on 4-7 shooting (3-4 from downtown). He had some poor challenges of shots under the hoop, and that is something you need to keep an eye on in a Kwame-Cook front court combo. He posted up, drop-stepped and banked working off the left block. He drained a three off a no-look feed from Kobe who drew Cook's man. He worked the two-man game and knocked down a long wing three with ease. He drained another three working the two-man with Kobe. He traveled on the perimeter trying to attack off the dribble. Poor transition D, not matching up with a man who was next to him and giving up a lob.

Radmanovic -- -- He had a couple little errors in the offense, but Phil really seemed to be encouraging him and letting him play through some issues. I'd like to see him cut to the hoop a little more versus hanging out on the three line when his man leaves him. Other than that, he has been stringing together some good games. Vlad scored 8 points on 2-6 shooting, grabbed 5 boards and had 1 steal in 25 minutes. He missed an open three and a drive on his first two attempts. He hit a little jumphook in the lane off an interior feed from Bynum. He swished an open corner three on a drive and kick from Kobe. Kobe set him up again under the hoop this time for FTs, he made both. He missed an attempt with a lot of contact at the end of the third trying to beat the buzzer. He faked a standard Tri cut and Bynum threw it out of bounds expecting him to keep cutting. Good crash on the glass to draw a foul on Carter and earn two FTs, he made one. He stole a Kidd kickout jumping into a passing lane late in the game.

Bynum -- -- Back-to-back strong games, especially in crunch time. Drew used his height decently against the smaller Nets. We still have some serious issues in working the ball to him when he gets partially fronted. You can clear out the backside to throw it over the D. You can flash to the FT line to do that and hit him with a high-low. Or you can let him seal as you ball reverse to the corner and hit him quickly with an entry feed. All of those are the bread and butter in our triangle when teams front. We mostly settled for trying to go over the top of the D. Bynum scored 10 points on 4-6 shooting, grabbed 6 boards, dished 4 assists and blocked 3 shots in 25 minutes. He did have 5 turnovers and 5 fouls. A couple of those turnovers seemed like questionable calls by the officials and Drew was getting a lot of contact from defenders. Bynum scored a layup off a two-man sequence with Kobe. He hit Vlad with an interior feed after running the two-man game and Vlad scored. He contested a drive by Carter on one end, then finished the break on the other. Easy assist to Evans who came off the weakside Tri screen and hit an open 10-footer in the lane. Great help D when the Lakers got scrambled and had Farmar on the bigman, Drew rejected the shot behind him and the Lakers scored on the break. He was fouled on an oop attempt and made one FT. That was all in his first quarter. He swatted penetration, then tied up Moore under the hoop. He posted up, had the ball stripped momentarily, got it back, attacked and drew FTs, he made one. He swatted Kidd who tried to attack Sasha, but then Bynum drew his second foul when Nachbar attacked. To start his second half, he missed a chippie under the hoop on a high entry from Kobe. He missed another chippie under the basket. He took the entry over the D and scored a layup. Careless three-second call on offense (he must have been in there for eight). He slipped a screen on our next set, took the feed, gathered himself and scored at the front of the rim. Phil seems to be gaining more trust in Bynum and his conditioning, giving him some long stints in the second half of the past couple of games. Drew has responded well thoughout that extended run.

Evans -- -- He's played a vital role in the Lakers last two wins. He gives us a better athletic defender to throw against the athletic SFs that Luke can have trouble with. Throw in his midrange and transition game on the offensive end and he gives us some nice punch off the bench in these situations. Phil went to him a little earlier than normal tonight when Luke had some problems. Good to see Mo step in with those starters and throttle our game up without a hitch. Evans scored 12 points off the bench on 4-8 shooting in 26 minutes. He also had 3 boards, 1 assist and 1 block. He knocked down an open 10-footer in the lane, coming off the weakside Tri screen (this is a standard sequence that I'd love to see Vlad and Mo get a few more looks from as they have solid mid range jumpers). He missed a left-handed layup. He drew FTs in the lane and made both. He sank a corner three on his first attempt of the second half after Kobe collapsed the D. He sank another corner three early in the fourth on a Farmar drive and kick. He drained a wing jumper from 19 feet out behind Bynum. Great D in the last 14 seconds hounding Carter and then using the foul to give with 6 seconds left. But, VC got off a decent look on the next inbounds, luckily missing under a little pressure from Luke.

Farmar -- -- Ever since Marcus Williams had the first half stint, knocking down J's, Farmar has locked down on him. Again, giving him problems in this one. Jordan throttled up his own offensive aggressiveness to start the fourth and get the Lakers off to a strong quarter. He finished the game with 10 points on 4-6 shooting, 5 assists without a turnover and 2 boards in 19 minutes. He pushed out the break and hit Kobe for a three. Nice alley-oop pass to Bynum after attacking on the dribble and it got Drew to the FT line. He ball-faked the defender then hit a three on his first attempt of the second half. He missed his next attempt behind the arc. He dunked off a breakaway. To start the fourth, he knocked down a three from the sideline. He attacked down the lane and kicked it to an open Evans for the three. He swished a baseline jumper, pulling up off the dribble and over a double team. Sweet backdoor lob to Kobe who put it in for a score. Great stint, he left with over 3 minutes left as the Lakers had pulled to a double digit lead. We then decided to try to coast this one in. Jordan led the Lakers with a +11.

Vujacic -- 8) -- Some serviceable minutes from Sasha in the last couple, even against some difficult defensive assignments. Anytime you can get his jumper dropping, he seems to provide some spark. He swished a long wing jumper on his first attempt tonight. That was his only score in 3 attempts. Weak transition D, ball watching as Carter released on Kobe's shot attempt and it resulted in an easy fastbreak layup behind Sasha. He was tapped on a baseline jumper at the end of the first half. He saved a high Farmar pass nicely, but shortly later Sasha would throw one out of bounds himself. Sasha matched up with Eddie House for a few minutes and generally seems to do a good job against him. He got 15 minutes of run tonight.

Phil -- -- Phil has gotten some nice bench production in the past couple of games. He's trusted them and they have stepped up. Perhap, he has gotten some mileage off that near collapse against Houston a few games back... They went zone out of a timeout in the second and gave up a dunk. They didn't do that again... Phil went to a Kwame, Luke, Kobe, Sasha, Smush lineup late in the second to match up with a small Nets lineup... The Lakers gave up 15 points off of 8 turnovers in the first half. They out shot the Nets 47 percent to 39 percent in that half. For the game, we shot 47.9 percent to the Nets 41,7 percent. We shot 12-24 from three... We started the fourth with a Bynum, Vlad, Evans, Sasha, Farmar lineup. He later brought in Kobe for Sasha, but kept everyone else... The Lakers shot their first FTs of the second half with 6:40 in the fourth... The Lakers went into total cruise control with 3 minutes left and nearly gave up the lead. They when to their spread-the-floor iso game and it resulted in some late shotclock chucks that missed the mark...

DB - glad that you are feeling better and you're able to do your usual great work.

I agree that the success and failures of the Lakers can usually be pinpinted at PG & C - like most teams. At C - the Kwame/Bynum has been effective, despite the ups & downs of both players. When one is down, the other is up that provides the promise of great things when they are both going good. Of course, it does bring up the possibility of what happens when both are going bad - I guess the solution would be Turiaff/Cook if that happens.

PG - What do you think about Westphals suggestion that the Lakers' starting lineup would definitely be improved with Evans in the starting line-up - of course, that would mean that Smush would be part of the 2nd team that would definitely be weakened with Evans' promotion - what do you think?

welcome back, DB. Now please don't cough on me.

With Odom out, Phil has played around with the starting line up. Which do you think he should go with until Odom returns? Vlad seems to be better coming off the bench. Cook can be good either way. He does not seem to be different either way (i.e. hits shots, can get a few rebounds, but is still not a strong defender).

The way things are going, is Kwame better as the starting C?

And will Farmar ever overtake Smush for the start?

When Odom returns, the only sure starters are Kobe, Odom, and Walton?

Thanks DB!

Nice homecoming for Andrew!

Three cheers for Cook!

Farmar is looking like a veteran!

Evans for #51 overall was a big steal!

What a strange game. It was an even stranger broadcast.

Farmar had a great game...

He's really fast, and not like a sprinter, but ball-fast (pushing the ball, driving, etc.) I love the kid a ton...he's a winner and you can't teach winner.

DB, it's great to have you back. No Lakers game feels the same without your re-cap and analysis.

This is precisely what I've been thinking about. The triangle is designed to get the ball into the post, yet these Lakers would rather swing the ball to the weakside. Luke and Cookie have been in this offense for 2 years and this will be Kobe's 7th.

DB, how big of a priority should this be in PJ's practices/film sessions, especially considering their sizeable defensive issues?

we were outscored in the paint 50-32 tonight. i can understand the low production in paint since we are shooting 50% at the arc, but I expect our centers to put more energy on defending the paint, and speaking of energy, does anyone know why taurif did not play tonight? is he injuried?

Well, you definitely need to monitor Bynum's minutes. You don't want to run him into the ground. Also, Kwame leads the team in +/-, so we seem to play a bit better with him out there. I think Phil needs to stay on top of both him and Bynum to make sure they are always playing with energy. When it's all said and done, it's not who starts but who finishes. Phil will probably keep changing that up depending out how each plays that particular game.

Quote:

And will Farmar ever overtake Smush for the start?

I thought before the season even started that Farmar would not start this season, but would likely start next season. We'll see. Again, you don't want to run him into the ground in his first year. We ran Smush into the ground last year with too many minutes. Plus, Farmar is still learning teams on the fly. It might be better to have him watching from the bench to pick up what is going on in a game before coming out there. I think Phil probably keeps Smush starting all season unless he really goes into a tailspin or has an injury.

I'm not so sure I would put Luke in that group. Phil may want him running the O in the second unit at some point down the line.

Luke makes some great reads at times in the offense and has hit the post men in a few of these ways, but you really need to have most players on the same page for some of these Tri counters. We've got Vlad, Jordan and Mo all new to the team.

I think it will definitely become more of a priority as the season goes along. Last year, it certainly took until the All Star break for some of the more advanced stuff to start clicking. We had to suffer through Kwame trying to pick things up with Mihm on the floor and when Kwame was in the post early on in the season we generally didn't look there.

There may also be some trust factor of whether Bynum is going to seal his man properly or be on the same page. Eventually, that won't be a problem. Don't know if it will be later this season, or perhaps next season when Bynum gets stronger and really starts doing a number on guys with seals and reads in this offense. But it will happen.

We had our hands full with VC and RJ...and to some extent Krstic pulling people out a little when he was in there. But Kwame and Cook certainly weren't challenging shots in the paint when VC and RJ would get in there. Then you had way too many easy points on turnovers or transition breakdowns.

Can't keep a good man down, another stellar write-up DB.

As I froze in my garage watching KCAL's outdated Tape Delay off the antenna, one thought that occured to me is VRad is starting to show signs.

If this guy can continue to round into form over the next few months, he could be very dangerous come playoff time.

If you look at the box score, it was a very balanced effort by the Lakers. Props to Smush and Cookie and VRad and the great rookie Jordan Farmar in particular.

Thanks DB. This team is growing without LO. If they can continue this pace they will be very tough when he returns. This team is deep and talented. Ronny hasn't even played.

These past few games have been a foretaste; we won with Kobe inured, we are winning games on the road with Odom injured. Contributions coming from Farmar, Evans, Bynum; Vlade is getting healthy, good game from Cook and Smush.

Come playoff time, everyone healthy, we can be a solid 10 deep squad. Not ready to win a ring this year, but we could cause more nosie in the playoffs than we did last year.

Have seen the Wiz the past few nights, they could be a big factor in the East this year too.

As for the points in the paint. LA does a bad job at putting a body on other teams bigs when Kwame and Andrew slide over to help. There was about 3 times last night that Moore was wide open for the offensive putback after Andrew left him to come over and contest penetration.

Thanks, DB.

I have to put those last three minutes on Phil though. When Bynum got his fifth with 2:48 left to go, he sent Mikki Moore to the line for the three point play to pull NJ within 10. Before that sequence, the Nets had only scored 9 points all quarter to the Lakers 22.

Then, for some unknown reason, Phil subs Luke for Bynum. Presumably, Phil is thinking he wants to switch everything on the perimeter, but with the Nets' inability to score the entire quarter, and Kidd, Carter, and RJ on the floor, you have to think they're going to take everything to the basket absent a shot blocker. Sure enough, as soon as Bynum leaves, Jefferson goes to the besket for two easy scores, NJ has cut the lead to six, and regained momentum.

I've been talking about Turiaf for weeks now. If you want to take Andrew out right there with his fifth, and Kwame's not fit to return, go to your only other rim guarding presence: Turiaf. As it stood, I would have just left Bynum in. It seemed to turn out right for Phil, as he was able to re-insert Andrew at the end, but ironically, at that point NJ had reached three point shooting mode as they looked to tie; that was the possession when you want all switchables on 'D'.

You're right, they did escape, but they shouldn't have been put in that position by their coach.
