It must be a nightmare for a future All-Star player to slip past your late first round into the second. How many G.M.s would take Gilbert Arenas in the first round if they knew how good he would be? It must not be easy to draft if Carlos Boozer or Michael Redd can slide into the second round. Even the pros make mistakes. _________________ "Darkness cannot drive out darkness. Trenton Hassell is not a bad second round pick, he was picked right before Gilbert back in 2001! Mehmet Okur was also a second round pick from 01 as well as Earl Watson & Bobby Simmons- 2001 was a damn deep draft!
Don't forget Luke- he was our second round pick in '03.
Anderson Varejao went in the second round to the cavs in 2004 and Duhon was the bulls '04 second round pick.
I think that the steal of second round steals behind Boozer & Gilbert could well end up being Ronny Turiaf- great pick by mitch in the second round. _________________ R.I.P. Doc Buss |

If Alando Tucker slips to the second he could be a steal. _________________ [Insert ignorant or naive statement from poster here.] |

That's why our second round pick via Charlotte is so important this year:
1) Deep draft, someone talented will likely be overlooked;
2) Some overseas player may have contract buyout issues that cannot be satisfied by the mandated first round salary range. A second round pick allows you to keep him overseas to develop further until the end of the contract, and allows you to utilize the MLE to spring him free if he's wanted earlier than the contract termination date. |

Luke Walton and Ronny Turiaf aren't looking bad at this point. _________________ "Darkness cannot drive out darkness. Only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that." ~~Martin Luther King Jr.~~ |

Which is why late in the 2nd round this year we go back to GU and take Ravio... _________________ “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” ― Elie Wiesel |

Boozer and Rashard Lewis were pretty obvious steals as soon as it happened though. They were pretty well known, and I thought both were steals when they were drafted. I was right.
I also thought Arenas would end up being a steal, the way he played in college. Their guards always do well in the pros, though I obviously never expected him to be an all-star.
Ellis was actually on my radar last year, and I was upset when we didn't take him for Von. Then I heard about Von's shooting and defense and though "ok, Mitch made the right choice." Now I'm back to being disappointed, but we can't fault him there. Wafer was the better triangle fit and still a good athlete.
I don't see anybody like that falling to round 2 this year though...unless a guy like Mustafa Shakur declares and drops. |

My bad... I thought he was an early 2nd rounder, he was actually a real late first rounder (28th) _________________ www.lakersbrasil.com

Are you suggesting Miss Longoria didn't have a first round pick and had to settle for Tony? _________________ "Darkness cannot drive out darkness. Only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that." ~~Martin Luther King Jr.~~ |

I hear you on that one- I did not want Ellis though, I thought that we shoulda taken Blatche- athletic, 6'11" has handles, can hit an outside shot. Maybe too perimeter oriented, but IT WAS THE SECOND ROUND.
I guess 2 out of 3 (Bynum & Turiaf) ain't bad- especially considering it was Mitch.
I did like the Wafer pick at the time because he seemed to be very competitive and had a nasty streak which we needed. Too bad he did not pan out for us. But you are right, if you are gonna take a guard, take Ellis. _________________ R.I.P. Doc Buss |
