Heard it on SportsCenter. Ric Bucher stating Phil and the Lakers were taking a long look at him during a workout when in the Orlando area.

Did a search on this before posting. Please delete if old news

Lakers archaeologists seem to be collecting a lot of fossils these days.
Aaron McKie, Vlade Divac and now possibly Penny Hardaway.
Perhaps they plan to open up a new museum in El Segundo.

Penny would work fine in a limited role.

Agreed.

They mentioned some deadline about non guaranteed contracts coming up and that allows these little manuevers. Anyone know more about that or how or who we would get rid of to free up a spot?

Realgm.com yesterday reported Penny being close to signing with Seattle. They said he had been very impressive in workouts. If the Knee is healthy ,he might be able to surprise a lot of ppl. His talent and skill level was not the reason he fell off.

One of those 10-day contracts could be offered to former All-Star Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway, who worked out for Sonics coach Bob Hill on Dec. 18 and impressed club officials with his conditioning and mobility. He is nearly five years removed from microfracture surgery on his right knee and has been impressive in workouts in Houston.

If we are going to cut a man and replace him, it should be for a big man, not a guard.

It seems Seattle signed some dude named Andre Brown.

Not so sure what effect this has on Penny but I would welcome him to L.A.

In a "limited role" that is.

Go Lakers!

Hmmm...my guess is he would play the same amount of minutes as Shammond and McKie. Oh, oops.

So they chose Andrew Brown instead , maybe they felt they needed more size and rebounding. Penny is still available. Id give him a shot in a workout and see how he looks up close. If some off the old Penny is still there ,sign him to a 10 day contract.

We should have a free spot because of Mihm's spot. Esp, since management seemed a bit perturbed about Devin Green leaving. I wouldn't be surprised if Plan A was to trade McKie and other expiring contracts for an upgrade in talent, but it seemed like bringing in Green was a backup plan. A healthy Penny could help fill in a similar role - 3rd guard off the bench at the 1 and 2, competing with Sasha for burn.

quick question! do we have a roster spot?

if you know the answer, it's nonsense to talk about signing 1 up.

Old Penny memories. I used to cheer for Penny when he was Knick and a Sun. He was one of my favorite players in the 90's. Check out the video.

I wouldn't mind the addition. We're not asking for an impact player but rather a veteran who has seen some things. Also I don't think that's a bad back up for Kobe if you ask me.

Course it hinges on whether he is truly healthy.

Penny's a REAL smart player.
If he's healthy, he could be a nice little addition.

Last I saw him play, he still had a nice post game, a pretty good looking J and of course, he could handle and pass very well. With his IQ, court vision and ball skills, he could fit into the T farily easily, I would imagine. We could ALWAYS use more smart veterens.

Plus, with the way the triangle is, you don't need a lot of athleticism to play in it. It's a great system for older players. How many years did it add to Shaw's career???

If it came down to McKie or Hardaway, I'd go with Lil Pen.

I just wonder if he's actually play.

Jim Jackson part II???

The Lakers don't have a roster spot at the moment, so I doubt it would happen.

If the Lakers were to sign someone to a 10 day or for the rest of the season, it would probably be after the trading deadline. They'll probably hold on to McKie until then, but once it passes, they could just buy him out to free up a spot if no trades are made.

Penny would allow Kobe to play minutes on the wing, while also allowing Odom to remain at 4 and in attack mode himself.

Would definitely welcome the move.

Penny wouldn't see any minutes. He'd be clueless in the triangle, couldn't possibly learn it in a minute, and Phil doesn't play guys who are clueless in his system.

Perhaps this off-season when he'll have a chance to participate in training camp, but to sign him now would be pointless.

Overrated, underachiever, washed up 5 years ago, pass.

OTHO a typical Mitch move so I say it gets done next week.

poor penny - we already wasted our mle this year...lol

but i really have trouble seeing where the playing time will come from.

could that mean that vlad is on the way out ?
penhy's probably not quick enough to play guard, but he's big enough to play small forward.

maybe we're moving some guys for a big man and that's how the roster spot will be created ?

kind of odd, but other than pottentialy health issues, penny's a great fit.

fine with me. this team needs veterans. (and no, shammond is not a veteran...).
