Quote:
The next off-season will not be a big one for the Lakers in free agency. (They can always make it big with a trade or two, but that's much more speculative and unpredictable, so we'll stick to the facts of free agency here.)

The Lakers' payroll is already at $58.4 million next season. The salary cap has not been determined, but it will be somewhere between $50 million and $55 million, meaning they will again have only the mid-level exception as their main spending tool. (Given annually to teams over the salary cap, it allows them to sign a player for about $30 million over five seasons.)

Radmanovic will make $6 million and Kwame Brown will make $9 million next season, so, in a sense, they are the reasons there is no free-agency money.

Brian Grant, Chris Mihm and Aaron McKie will indeed be off the books next season.

Grant Hill would probably join the Lakers for their mid-level exception, but I don't see any teams offering him that much money over that many seasons. And I don't really see Hill finishing his career as a point guard, although I see what direction you're heading with your question (he would be a veteran guard playing in Phil Jackson's triangle offense at the end of his career, just like Ron Harper and Brian Shaw).

And, no, Kevin Garnett is not coming to the Lakers any time soon. Such a concept would cost them Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum, and that simply won't happen, even if they lose their next 20 games. (OK, maybe by that point, they'd entertain just about anything.)

Sure sounds like something that REALLY COULD HAPPEN (makes sense too!) The Lakers need a vet guard in the worse way that can actually still play. If Grant Hill is available for the money the Lakers can offer... Man just do it MITCH!!!!

Hill has been relatively healthy the last couple of years. He would be a great player in the triangle, hitting midrange Js all night. Smart and a good passer too.

Grant Hill is the perfect triangle player, initiator, all of that.

You want your Scottie Pippen, you got him in G. Hill.

Yes, I would offer him the full MLE in the offseason, and give him as many years as he wants.

Ration his minutes, give him about 12-15 games off in the regular season...because you want a cat like Grant in the playoffs.

Think of the versatility! Grant, LO, Luke and Farmar are all great passers! Grant has great handles. Grant has the midrange, and can keep you honest with the three.

Acquiring even an old, oft-injured Grant Hill makes us a heavy championship contender. Book it.

He is healthy this season, so Id give him a 1 year Mid-Level offer.

Some strange reason, players seem to be healthy their contract years. Vlade, Mckie and our MLE curse makes me shy away from this. I'd give Jalen Rose a buzz before Hill.

i repsect him to death with everything he's been through, and his determination to come back.
now that zo has a ring, there isn't a single player in the league i'd like to see get a ring more than hill.

i've allways thought he could be a good mle target for us. he's really had little to no problems with his ankle in the last couple of years.

the only question is can we dump vlad.
i can't see us investing in hill unless we're able to move vlad for a big or prefferably a guard. obviously an overpaid one though...

Rose? com'on now...

Grant Hill at least can still play. He has a high basketball IQ and can do the intangibles (hustle, on court leadership) basically be a good role player...I could see this happening..but no more than 1 year contract...he's probably got 2-3 years left in him playing 25 minutes...Kobe lit him up a couple nights ago...

On contract next season:

5 Andrew Bynum, Kwame Brown, Ronny Turiaf
4 Lamar Odom, Brian Cook
3 Vladimir Radmanovic, Maurice Evans
2 Kobe Bryant, Sasha Vujacic
1 Jordan Farmar

To sign: Luke Walton (3), 2007 #1 pick and possibly #2 pick and maybe Smush Parker (1).

That puts the Lakers at 14 players. I don't think they'll use their MLE and if they do it won't be on a 4th SF. It will probably be a PG aquired through trade or whatever.

Grant Hill? MLE? Are you kidding?

Good guy, deserves all respect in the world. $2MM per year for two seasons - max

I read that the other day too. It sounds like idle speculation, rather than whispered interest from within the Laker inner sanctum. I've always felt that Hill would be an outstanding tri player, perhaps the closest thing to a perfect tri fit of any NBA player. His health seems better.

Salary-wise, I'm not sure if the Lakers would be all that aggressive. Mitch has two of his own free agents that will be looking for pay increases (Smush and Luke), with the latter desiring MLE numbers as well. If you added all of them together (Luke, Hill, Smush) you're adding $14 million or so to salaries.

Nevertheless, if I was named Mitch Kupchak, I'd do two things this summer:

1. Go after Grant Hill.

2. Get my name changed.

They would have to trade Radman if they want Hill. No way the Lakers should have two MLE's plus Luke playing the same position.

That said, Hill is an intriguing idea given how his skills mesh with the triangle. Phil might salivate over this one, but I'd be wary of the injury history.

I suspect the Magic will offer him a couple of seasons around what Sam Cassell makes, slightly above the MLE. They have a young competitive team, but every young team needs a veteran with Playoff experience. He wouldn't have to displace his family. The Magic have the inside track. If they decided not to re-sign him, he would be a good MLE candidate, but I doubt he moves if the ownership knows what they are doing. If he leaves, he might be headed to San Antonio. He seems to be a friend of Tim Duncan.

I always loved Hill's game when he wasn't playing the Lakers. I hope his injury plagued season's don't keep him out of the HOF.

Grant Hill. MLE money. Fine. The team needs veteran leadership, and Hill can still play.

No way, with the Laker curse of the MLE he'd probably break his leg as soon as he signed.

Ron Harper and Brian Shaw seemed to workout okay in MLE moves. Even GP wasn't bad.
