Battle Tested... When you get a young team like this into as many overtime games as we have had already, it's only going to help this team in the playoffs. These minutes are valuable for guys like Bynum and our bench. Character is often tested when you are in the trenches and must find a way to survive.

After a thumping in Miami on Christmas day, the Lakers with an even thinner lineup and Kobe overcoming the groin injury managed to put a good fight and overcome the veteran Heat 124-118 in the extra session. The Lakers had some sequences of just sensational passing and quick read and reacts on the offensive end at times in this game. They also knocked down their threes at a high click, going 14-25 from behind the arc. At the end of the night, the Lakers had seven players score in double digits.

Staples Center was a bit chippy at times with the calls by the refs...not sure whether it was some inconsistency in the calls or the grumbling over the calls Wade gets that had the crowd so irked. Perhaps, those who were there can chime in. Staples even gave Shaq a round of scorn when he was on the scoreboard. So much for the Shaq-Kobe event this year as Shaq watched both of the games from the sideline.

Kobe -- -- Some great D by Kobe on Wade at times tonight, especially as the game grew tighter in regulation and overtime. When he played Wade for the perimeter shot, we had success. That allowed him to sag off and take angles on penetration, and he was still able to recover on some jumpers well enough to force misses. That's how you play him. Somehow, he managed to stay out of foul trouble, only getting 2 despite the match up. And, somehow, he managed not to get to the freethrow line...only taking three in the game. Two of those came on a key switch in overtime when the Heat tried to put GP on Kobe out of a timeout instead of Wade or Posey. It backfired as Kobe got to the line on a double stiff arm from GP. Kobe gave an excellent two-way game and did a great job setting up teammates throughout the night. He finished with 25 points on 11-24 shooting (0-2 from three, 3-3 from the line), 8 assists with only 1 turnover, 1 block and 4 boards. He came off the weakside screen, pumpfaked a few times then hit a fading FT jumper. He flipped a pass to Ronny trailing the break for a throwdown. He attacked the baseline, was hit about three times before he finally got clobbered on the left block and managed to hit an And-1, he made the FT. He worked out of the low post, faking the handoff to the cutter, losing both defenders badly, turning and hitting the short jumper. He missed a couple of jumpers after returning from a rest. He attacked down the lane, took contact falling out of bounds with no call just after he kicked out a pass. He sealed his man under the hoop and Luke found him for a layup. He missed a three from the top of the key. Wow, amazing ref inconsistency when Kobe got into the paint, took contact on a big and went down without a whistle as he missed what should have been an And-1. On the next possession, he slipped his way through defenders, turned and hit a baseline jumper. Kobe attacked, took some contact with no call and missed (the crowd started to get ticked at this point). He attacked from the top of the key to his right and banked high over Zo. He attacked and kicked out to Smush who beat the clock with a three. Kobe picked up a tech griping to the officials about the calls. He attacked and kicked to Vlad for a three at the end of the third. He attacked the lane, took a hit on his left arm and lost the ball with no call. He missed a pull-up jumper. He tied up Wade on a drive for a jumpball (unheard of, lol). After winning the jumpball, he splashed wing jumper over a double team on the other end. A second miracle, he drew a clear-out foul on Wade as he attacked to his right. He missed a jumper and went down when Posey walked under him. He pumped a couple times on Posey then swished a wing jumper. He missed a wing jumper over Wade and wanted the arm foul. He then fouled Wade on a jumper on the other end. He missed a baseline turnaround. With under a minute left, the shotclock low, Kobe attacked the lane and hit a tough runner at the FT line with defenders around him while avoiding a player trying to take a charge. On the last shot of regulation, he slid to his left to avoid a charge in the lane, took contact and no whistle and held his arms up as the clock expired (normally, they blow a whistle either way on that one but since it was the last play of the game, no way they were going to call that one).

Overtime: He got stripped by Wade for a score the other way, he had a smirk of disbelief that no foul was called. He drained a wing jumper over Wade on the next possession. He hit Cook for a three from the sideline. He scored a layup, spinning in air to get contact with the bigman after working off of Luke who had the ball in the post. Out of a timeout, the Heat switched GP onto Kobe and he was quickly whistled for a handcheck foul on the perimeter (looked like both hands, too), Kobe knocked down both with 37 seconds left despite looking winded to give the Lakers a 3-point lead. Those were his second and third FTs of the game. Great stop on Wade, forcing a pass out with some help from Bynum and Smush stole the ball.

Walton -- -- Luke gave the Lakers a double-double with 10 boards, 10 points and 6 assists in 35 minutes. He was hampered with some foul issues throughout the game, putting him onto the bench at a couple of points. Again, he did a great job of playmaking for guys and was setting up teammates for some high-quality shots right under the basket. He shot 4-12 form the floor and just 2-5 from the line and had a tough time on a few finishes, a couple where he probably should have gotten to the line. With Wade on him early, the Lakers looked to Luke. He missed a layup on one of his first attempts and wanted the foul. He lost Wade on an up-and-under move and scored easily off the glass. Wade went for a steal, missed and Luke scored an easy layup. Luke drew a Heat foul crashing the offensive glass, he made one FT. He posted up Wade, spun and left Wade nailed to the floor and scored a layup. He picked up his second foul late in the first quarter and had to sit. Nice work off the dribble with guys rushing at him from behind and in front, he whipped a pass under the hoop to Cook for a layup. He posted up, spun, and missed layup when he got hammered from behind, knocking him out of bounds with no call. He took an entry pass and a lot of contact when Wade went for a steal with no call. He missed a fade. He attacked in transition and drew FTs, he made one. He took the ball in the low post and eventually wrapped a bounce pass around his man to Kobe under the hoop for a layup. He powered through DWade under the hoop after Turiaf tipped him the ball and he scored an And-1 layup, he missed the FT. Luke picked up back-to-back fouls midway through the third and had to sit with his fourth. He threw a soft perimeter pass to Kobe that was picked off for a dunk the other way. He then missed a corner three. He got rejected as he attacked the rim (close play on whether it was a foul, clean block or even goaltending). In OT, he took a post feed, found Kobe on the Tri cut under the hoop and he scored a layup.

Smush -- 8) 8) -- Smush had the long ball dropping again...good thing, because he couldn't connect on anything in front of the stripe. He also came up with another late-game steal on the defensive end. "Dwyane Wade penetrates and tries to dish it out to either corner, and I just gave him a little head fake like I was going to go double him and I got back to the shooter," Smush said in the Times. Jason Williams and GP were pretty much non factors most of the night. Smush had 17 points on 5-14 shooting (5-7 from three), 4 assists, 5 boards and 2 steals in a team-high 44:14. He took a long jumper early in the set and missed (Phil didn't like that one). He missed another early offense jumper. He swished a wing three on a kickout from Kobe. He swished a three from the corner. He swished a long three from the top of the key. He missed a three at the half time buzzer. He missed a layup and a FT jumper, both badly to start the second half. He swished a wing three on a kickout from Ronny. He picked a man from behind, took it down court, left waaay to early and front-rimmed a layup (luckily we got the ball back and scored). He drained a catch-and-shoot wing three on a kickout from Kobe and smiled as he went down court. Smush got robbed on an And-1, having it erased by a charge call, when Kapono was still moving to get underneath him after Smush left his feet, he was in disbelief along with Staples. He attacked from the wing and fed Vlad under the hoop for a layup. He attacked and kicked to Sasha for a three. He attacked the lane and got swatted by Zo. He went after a loose rebound, tried to save it inbounds but it went to a Heat player, who passed to another in the lane for a score to tie the game at 110. Clutch steal as he dropped to the level of the ball on a Wade kickout to snag it. After the Lakers passed the ball around, Smush was fouled with 16 seconds left leading by three, he sank both clutch FTs (and the Orlando misses were then referenced by TNT). He had some tough luck trying to track down a couple of key boards along the baseline, but another quality game by Smush on both ends. Said Phil in the Times: "He's been playing really well. He stepped in and took that pass at the right time, an appropriate steal, again, at the end of the game."

Cook -- -- Superb game by Cook. He had to give us some run at the C spot because of foul trouble by both Turiaf and Bynum. So, we ran some of that Cook/Vlad bigman lineup that hurt us earlier in the season...but what could we do? They held down the fort on the defensive end and spread the floor on the offensive end, mostly due to Cook. He ended up leading the Lakers with a +10. Cook had it going from the perimeter, sinking 10-16 shots (4-6 from three) for 25 points, he grabbed 10 boards (4 offensive), dished 4 assists and blocked 3 shots in 35 minutes. He had a couple errors in this one and didn't finish strong on a couple of plays, but he was a key to this win. He sank a wing three to start the game, working off the weak side double screen. He worked the two-man game with Kobe next time down and sank another three. He pulled down an offensive board against the zone and hit a short jumper in the lane. Wow, amazing passing sequence that went from Smush to Kobe to Luke to Ronny and finally Cook in a matter of seconds for a dunk in the lane. Instead of going up strong on an interior feed from Luke, he faded and rattled out a jumper. He scored a layup when Luke whipped a pass to him under the hoop in transition. He drained a wing three from the left side. Smush tracked down a loose ball and fed Cook under the hoop for a layup. Cook scored 17 points on 7-10 shooting to lead the Lakers at the half. He drained a wing jumper off an inbounds to open the second half. Great rejection under the hoop to save a basket, then on the other end he knocked down an elbow jumper off a feed from Evans. He missed a point-blank layup (should have thrown it down). He missed an open wing jumper. He missed an open three to start overtime. He splashed a sideline three with a man challenging him on his next attempt when Kobe found him. He had a swing pass picked off for a steal. After pulling down a defensive board, he was fouled and made a late FT. Comparing this game to the Christmas day match up, Cook said, "I thought we just showed a lot more energy. We weren't as lethargic, especially on the defensive end. We kept Dwyane Wade out of the lane, so he couldn't pick us apart. Everybody was making shots, everybody was having fun."

Bynum -- -- Drew got into some foul trouble that limited his game and made for some choppy minutes. However, he tightened it up and played nearly all of the last 17 minutes of this game. These minutes are valuable, going up against a veteran club and playing the entire crunch time. He even drained a couple of overtime FTs. Bynum finished with 11 points on 4-7 shooting (3-3 from the line, he shooting 73 percent from the line), 8 boards (4 offensive), and 2 assists in 27:53 of action. He picked up his first foul on Wade penetration 3 minutes into the game. He posted up Zo and drew a foul on his first touch. He drop-stepped Zo on the same offensive stand and missed a decent look on the baseline. He picked up his second foul with 7:30 left in the first when Zo got the ball in the post, he had to sit. Instead of flashing to the strong-side post, he spun back to the hoop, and dunked a lob pass from Vlad. He drew the D in the post, then kicked out to an open Sasha for the three. He took a feed from Sasha in the lane and banked in an easy one over defenders. Nice look under the hoop, finding Evans who scored an And-1. After Turiaf came in for a short stint and picked up his third foul, Bynum picked up his third foul on Wade penetration on the next play and had to sit. He challenged penetration and it ignited the break. He picked up his fourth foul two minutes into the second half while stepping out on a screen. He gathered a miss by Vlad and dunked it back in. Mo hit him with a bounce pass and Drew threwdown while fouled by Walker, he made the FT. Good hustle for a loose ball out on the perimeter and we regained possession. He grabbed a Kobe miss away from Zo, missed the putback and then missed a tip attempt (good effort). In overtime, after pulling down a board on one end, he trailed the play, took a pass from Luke in the lane and drew a foul, he made both with 3:11 left. Great help D with under 30 seconds left, coming over to help Kobe on Wade and forcing a kickout, which Smush stole. Bynum didn't have a block in this one, but he ranks No. 3 in the league in blocks per 48 minutes.

Turiaf -- -- Ronny couldn't stay out of foul trouble in this one, which definitely hurt since he defends the screen-roll well. He played just 10:35 had tallied five fouls in that time, some off the DWade penetration. He scored 2 points on his only attempt, grabbed 1 board and had a couple of assists with 1 block. He hit Cook with the extra pass in the lane for a dunk, then he shoved Cook in the head afterward. He trailed the break, took a flip pass from Kobe and dunked. He picked up back-to-back fouls against DWhistle's penetration late in the first quarter and had to sit. He came in for one play, got called for a foul on Wade and had to sit. Nice tip of an offensive board to Luke who scored an And-1.

Radmanovic -- -- Some real up and down minutes from Vlad in this one. Some of it poor offensive execution, so solid execution and some just bricking of jumpers. In the end, he scratched out 11 points on 4-10 shooting (2-3 from three), 3 boards and 1 assist with 2 turnovers. With our bigmen and Luke getting into foul trouble, we definitely needed something from him. Walker lit him for a few scores. Bad offensive execution on back-to-back plays, one resulting in a loose-ball turnover as he attacked into a crowd, the other a charge. He drew FTs on the defensive glass and made one. Great read and pass, lobbing to Bynum from the opposite wing for an alley-oop dunk. He got stripped trying to attack in the post. He missed a wing jumper. He blocked Walker's drive attempt. He missed a wide open wing jumper. He knocked down a three from the top off the key off a pass from Kobe. He scored a layup off a drive and dish from Smush. He hit a three on a drive and kick from Kobe at the end of the third. Walker hit some threes and posted him up for a jumphook. Vlad faked the three, attacked and missed a layup, but Bynum cleaned it up. He attacked from the wing and banked in a runner.

Evans -- -- Mo was again in the thick of things, and once again stepped up with some game. He tied his career high of 4 assists in this game, possibly showing a bit more comfort in the offense. He scored 12 points in 26 minutes on 4-7 shooting and grabbed 3 boards. He played a long, 16-minute stretch between the third and fourth quarters when Luke got into some foul trouble. He missed a turnaround jumper on his first attempt. He got backdoored by Wade for a reverse layup. He took a Bynum feed and hit with his left on the other side of the rim for an And-1, he made the FT. He passed on a three, took a dribble to his left, then knocked the three down. He posted up and hit Cook flashing to the elbow for a jumper. He faked, attacked to his left and hit a pull-up baseline jumper. With Kobe about to check in for him, Mo attacked the lane, drew a whistle and scored an And-1 layup showing a bit of athleticism to get the shot up, he missed the FT. He hit Andrew with a bounce pass under the hoop for an And-1 dunk. He faced up in the post and knocked down the midrange jumper.

Farmar -- -- Early in the fourth he threw a long outlet bounce pass that was picked off. Phil called a timeout and yanked him for Smush. That made it a short night for Farmar, playing just 9 minutes in which he scored 5 points on 2-5 shooting. He faked the shot, took a dribble after his man did a fly by and swished the wing jumper. He missed a three on his next attempt. Farmar showed some nice skills attacking off the weakside, getting contact and then banking an And-1 over a help defender with his left, he made the FT. He got blocked on the baseline, when he didn't go for the floater of the help D.

Vujacic -- -- Short minutes, but quality minutes from Sasha. With Smush playing decent and no good match up SG for Sasha, he was limited to just 10 minutes. He scored 6 points, sinking both three attempts he took. He knocked down a three on his first attempt when Bynum kicked out to him from the top of the key. Nice feed to Bynum, pulling up at the FT line and whipping it to him on the low block for a layup. He got one of those new-ball bounces with the old ball when he got a three to rattle around the rim before settling in, he had a grin on his face returning to the other end.

Phil -- -- Man, Phil had his hands full with the foul trouble to the front court. The Lakers were forced to hold down the fort with a Cook/Vlad bigman combo when Turiaf and Bynum each had three fouls early, and then later in the third. Somehow, we survived and Phil even went with Bynum for the critical minutes... Kapono was on Kobe and Wade on Luke defensively early in the game. The Lakers went to Luke on a number of possessions... Miami shot 55 percent, the Lakers 52 percent at the half. The Lakers were 8-12 from the three line and had 19 assists in the first half, passing the ball extremely well... The Lakers had just 11 turnovers on the night (Miami, however, capitalized on them for 16 points as some lead to easy baskets)... Even though Phil probably wishes we didn't have to put in the extra minutes, these overtime games are building some character. He liked how the team responded after losing a late game edge. "They said, `Well, let's get it in overtime,' and they did," Phil said. "They went out and got that game in overtime, which was a good effort, I thought, against a team that knows how to play down the stretch pretty well."... The team has a challenge against San Antonio and Dallas in the next two. "We have a very difficult week," Phil said. "We know we've got our challenge on the road. Tonight's game obviously was extremely important. We got off to the right start."...

Jack Coon -- -- On Jan. 14 Jack passed away. He was 90 years old and a Laker fan since moving to L.A. in 1960. He and his son used to watch Laker games together, some of his son's fondest memories. His son, Larry Coon, has a passion for the Lakers and the game that is known by most NBA fans who frequent sites like these. I wanted to pass on my condolences to Larry and his family, as well as pay tribute in some small fashion to a fan and father. My thoughts are with you, Larry.

Sorry for the delay. I had a birthday party, putting the kids to bed, watching two hours of 24, and an overtime Laker game to fit in tonight. Yikes.

thanks, DB... the game is really over only when you post your comments... but the kids (and 24) are the first priority...
the triangle was effective tonight... but what i found definitely impressing is kobe's d... the best player in the game is also the best defensive player...

Thanks. I'm still a little wired. Just a busy day.

Kobe's D in the second half was top notch. You've got to always play Wade for the shot, even to the point of giving up some good looks at jumpers. For Kobe to get the tie-up, the clear-out foul and help cause that turnover on the key drive...those are big plays... Then, he's got to carry the team on the other end. Got to love it when he gives you some of the best two-way play around.

Nice to see Smush continue draining them from distance. I also like to see him get multiple steals in games...the Lakers are 13-2 when he gets at least 2 in a contest.

When Cook just lets the offense create his scoring opportunities, he tends to have success out there as a scorer. It's games you see him trying to create shots for himself where he gets in trouble. His rebounding and shot blocking were much needed w/ Turiaf and Bynum in foul trouble. LA is 3-0 in the games he hits for at least 15 points.

Good to see Sasha find his touch after going scoreless in the last 2 games. He's made 45% of his last 29 three point attempts (which goes back to 12/31 verse Philly).

Evans is really starting to look comfortable. He has recorded as many double figure scoring games in the past 10 days as he had in November and December combined. His midrange game off the bench diversifies the Laker attack.

On a side note, the Lakers have turned the ball over a lot less since Kwame went down at 13.4 per since his injury. They'd commit the 4th fewest TO's in the league if that was their mark for the season....they were at the bottom of the NBA seven games ago (either worst or right after Orlando)...now 5 teams turn it over more than them.

One of the more inconsistantly referee'd games I have seen in a long time. It was almost a full out assault and battery against the Lakers while the Heat had get out of jail free cards. It is games like this that make fans cry conspiracy when it comes to officiating.

Life after Laker games are not complete until the DB overview arrives?!?!

Some overall observations
** Phil is actively coaching and calling TOs, instead of letting his team learn by itself on the court. Good to see

** If Vlad and/or Cook are hitting their shots, they might be able to survive at times since it would force their bigs (in this case, Zo) to defend on the perimeter while opening the lane

** It's still amazing seeing the type of fouls that DWade receives, while Kobe gets butchered w/o any fouls called?!?!

** It was good to see Luke do his thang on the court w/his passes

** Enjoyed Phil's strategy of having Luke posting up DWade to make his spend energy on defense. Which is why it is important that Smush continually attacks to make the opposing team's PG work on both sides of the court

What did Luke do to the refs that they refuse to give him a call? He got hammered more than once and even sent to the floor without a whistle. TNT said the crowd was getting a little "antsy" due to the ref calls. Let em have it.

Evans is looking like mini-Marion out there. Twitchy, explosive leaper/rebounder, strong mid-range game/inconsistent from 3, and he releases his shot while he's still on the way up.

Nice pick up

I feel the Lakers would have easily won this game if it weren't for two things:

1 - Securing defensive rebounds. The Lakers seem to have this problem every single night. Too many teams are having too many second-chance (and even third- and fourth-chance) points. Hopefully Odom's return will help fix this.

Doesn't it seem that our ball handlers are better rebounders than our big men?

2 - The complete disparity between free throws taken and free throws given up. Some of our young bigs make stupid mistakes. Sasha sometimes gives up the foul too easily. It can't all be blamed on the refs.

Last night could have been blamed on the refs. The officiating was horrendously inconsistent. As Steve Kerr noted, "Wade gets nicked and he goes to the free throw line. The Lakers get banged around and they get nothing."

But it wasn't even that, it was all the call reversals that seemed to always go against the Lakers.

I don't like blaming officials but sometimes it seems that they don't know what they are doing. The Wizards' game, the Kings' game, last night. The Lakers are always knocked around and they get no calls, but other teams are rewarded for faking and flopping. Is this the league's idea of parity?

And my condolences to the Coon family. Larry, I am a big fan of yours, and you being here tells me you were brought up right. Best wishes for you and your family.

Thanks for the outstanding recap DB!!

I had a feeling that once the chance of Webber actually signing went in the toilet, Cook would have a great game last night. 25/10 with Snaq courtside is sweet. 8)

I was fortunate enough to be at the game last night and its been one of the best games I've been to lately. But what Kerr said was correct, every nick to Wade was a foul. That first one called on Ronny or Andrew(can't remember) was bogus. Wade was on the floor and then they call the foul. The refs were terrible last night. It was only in the second half when they started calling stuff for the Lakers. All in all, its a win and thats what counts.

i went to the game too....

-the refs are as horrible as advertised(i felt like i was in MIA)
-i boo'd more than i cheered (thats a shame)
-when they showed lil jon on the screen an usher went and stood in front of him(blocking the camera). lil jon tapped the usher and pointed up to the screen (like man you are blocking my face time....lol then he got up and put his arm around the usher and swayed back and forth.
-the crowd wasnt very loud last night until the end of the 4th and OT
-the biggest non-call was Luke's, I came home and fast forwarded the game just to see that play.
-staples center play of the game was Kobes pass to Turiaf
-carls jr star of the game was B.Cook
-im not sure if they showed this on TV but Shaq didnt come out with the team he came out by himself alittle bit later. not sure if he was expecting a grand entrance. during the game he was shown on the screen and was boo'd intensely. he put his hand up to his ear(like i cant hear you or thats all you got?) what an ass

Great Win though......Hurry back L.O.!!!
r.i.p. Mr Coon
thanks DB... you are the Jack Bauer of LG

My condolences to the Coon's. Nothing that can be said will make it better, I just pray you (and your family) have the strength and courage to get through this.
