Scouting Report
Dallas is one of the best teams in the league and a big reason is because they are such a good first quarter team. Dallas is 9-2 when they score 30 or more points in the first quarter (they were 22-3 in this category last season) Josh Howard may be the fastest starter among the Mavs so the first goal tonight is to compete and win the first quarter.
Dallas starts Devin Harris and former Laker Eddie Jones at the guard spots, Josh Howard and Dirk Nowitzki at the forwards, and Eric Dampier at the center position. Harris is a fast point guard who has improved his perimeter shot but is still more of a threat to drive. Jones is a 3 point threat and is moving really well without the ball. We need to make sure we are ready for his backcuts in the half court. Howard is a good all-around player with a solid mid-range game and an improved 3 point shot. However, he is still more of a threat as a cutter/driver/slasher. He is also their best defender. Nowitzki is the reigning MVP of the league and is a 3 point shooter with a quick release. He has multiple moves in the post but prefers the turnaround jumper. They like to isolate him at the top of the key and one of their most dangerous plays is a pick and pop where he sets the screen with his back to the baseline and then pops for the 3. Dampier does a good job of getting early seals in the low post but his biggest contribution might be on the offensive boards. With so many other offensive weapons on the floor he takes advantage of the defense ignoring him to focus on the other guys.
Dallas’ bench features two veterans who provide instant offense. Jason Terry and Jerry Stackhouse have an extremely green light to shoot. Juwan Howard, Devean George and Trenton Hassell also give veteran experience off the bench. One of the pleasant surprises for the Mavs this season has been the play of Brandon Bass. He has a big body and a banger’s mentality. We need to box him out. They will run some isolations for him and an occasional post up opportunity.
Defensively, the Mavs will mix it up with a 2-3 zone defense sometimes (the call is fist up) and even a 2-2-1 press (“22”). Their main players are really offensive minded so we cannot let them off the hook by settling for quick jump shots.
Offensively, their main sets are the same as last season along with the same calls for special actions. For example, they may call a play and if Coach Johnson tugs on his ear (or says “EAR”) it means he wants the play to end with an isolation at the top. They are big time play repeaters. If a play works, they will keep running it till the defense shows they can stop it. For example, in a recent game they ran the same play 6 straight times to start the fourth quarter. We know they will run a multitude of screen and rolls/pops including one of their main sets which features two pick and rolls in the same play (“Horns Up- Horns Out – a high screen and rol with the ball being swung to the wing for a wing screen and roll) They are also effective with their transition screen and rolls, whether one or two guys set the screens. (Drag and Double Drag).
Dallas finally got healthy a few weeks ago and went on a seven game win streak. This is a veteran team and they are playing solid on both ends of the floor. There is no panic with this team. We must bring the energy from the opening tip or we could be in big trouble before we break a sweat but if we execute our offense and get back on defense we should be in good shape.

Notes
The Lakers lost last season’s series with the Mavericks 1-3 for the first time since the 1986-87 season and only the second time ever (1983-84). This will be the 115th overall meeting between the two franchises with the Lakers holding an 87-27 series advantage. In their most recent meeting March 11 at STAPLES Center, the Lakers lost 72-108, the team’s worst home loss in Los Angeles era history and their sixth worst defeat since overall since moving from Minneapolis prior to the start of the 1960-61 season. The Lakers are 5-5 against the Mavericks in their last 10 games. In their last 10 games in Dallas, the Lakers are 4-6 and have lost their last 3 in a row at American Airlines Center. At Staples Center, the Lakers are 12-3 all-time against the Mavericks....[/b] _________________ The only thing standing between me and greatness, is me. |

Nice game thread and scouting report minorbravo!
Sounds like defensive communication and ball movement on the offensive end are the keys tonight. Hopefully LO's defense on Dirk is as good as Phil claims it to be, that would make everything alot easier for the Lakers. Kobe should have his way with EJ on both ends, and the interesting matchup will be Fisher vs Harris. Harris is no slouch on d, so Fish will have his work cut out for him on both ends.
Howard vs Walton could be the biggest matchup of the night. With Luke in the middle of a slump, Howard could make this a very long night at the 3 spot. Lets hope Luke can stay in front of him . I'm guessing we will see Kobe and possibly Lamar play a few minutes at the 3 to help out. _________________ "It's just a job. Grass grows, birds fly, waves pound the sand. Out of this Texas Two Step, This is the one I thought we'd loose. After the 2nd half debacle at San Antonio, they'll need a strong showing from start to finish tonight to win. Kobe plays great at Dallas but I don't expect 60+.
I'm going to be optimistic
Lakers 104

Since Eddie isn't really doing much offensively for the Mavs, maybe it will be possible for Luke to matchup with him and Kobe to guard Howard? _________________ "It's just a job. Grass grows, birds fly, waves pound the sand. I beat people up."-The Greatest |

When we get 99 or more points,I believe our record is a perfect 13-0...
When we have 6 or more guys score in double figures,we are also 13-0 to the best of my recollection....
So.....Score 99 or more, and get 6 guys in double figures, seems to be the "magic" solution....
Kobe 12 for 25,2 of 5 from 3 point land, and 11 of 12 from the line for a sweet 37..... with 6 dimes to lead the way....
Now if we get another 5 guys scoring 10 to 15 points, thats the ticket...
Lakers..... 105
Mav's...... 101 |

If Lakers beat Dallas on the road tonight it's easily the best win of the year considering the circumstances. _________________ 1) DO WHATEVER IT TAKES

We must keep Dallas off the offensive glass to win this game. This is a must win game for us. _________________ Kobe Bryant has brought the Lakers three championships, 4 Finals, carried an absolutely pathetic team to the playoffs in a loaded Western Conference and has given us countless thrills and memories.
