"Armageddon in Retrospect"... it's a collection of unpublished nonfiction and fiction. I'm pretty excited about it.
Anyone else going to pick one up?
Quote: | "When Kurt Vonnegut died in April 2007, the world lost a wry commentator on the human condition. Thanks to this collection of unpublished fiction and nonfiction, Vonnegut's voice returns full force. Introduced by his son, these writings dwell on war and peace, especially the firebombing of Dresden, Germany. The volume opens with a poignant 1945 letter from Pfc. Kurt Vonnegut Jr. to his father in Indianapolis, presenting a vivid portrait of his harrowing escape from that city. The fiction, full of his characteristic humor, includes stories about time travel and the impossibility of peace in the world ('Great Day') and, in the title piece, a kind of mock Paradise Lost, Dr. Lucifer Mephisto teaches his charges about the insidious nature of evil and the impossibility of good ever triumphing. In his final speech, Vonnegut lets go some of his zingers (jazz is 'safe sex of the highest order') and does what he always did best, tell the truth through jokes: 'And how should we behave during the Apocalypse? We should be unusually kind to one another, certainly. But we should also stop being so serious. Jokes help a lot. And get a dog, if you don't already have one.' So it goes." I wonder what observation either might make about the fact that this thread has only 4 posts while howard stern is two pages and going... _________________ “We must always take sides. Hey, don't knock Stern!
I really enjoy Vonnegut. I have read several books of his, a few short stories, and have Player Piano sitting on my night stand waiting to be read next. But the reason I did not partake in this thread is because I was afraid that this was a hoax, because it was posted on April Fool's Day.
Also, something about mike_dee's post and the description of the book did not sit well with me. I am not sure what it is, but it kept me from posting. _________________ Courage doesn't always roar.

^ I would never post something fake, Encina!
So far, I've only read his letter back home after the Dresden fire bombings. Pretty cool stuff.
My favorite Vonnegut line is "a semicolon is a hermaphroditic transvestite." _________________ MTFBWYA |

Good Man!
Maybe sombody else should have been reading Vonnegut instead of, say, "My Pet Goat"? (actually "The Pet Goat", for you trivia buffs) _________________ “We must always take sides. Yes, but Vonnegut believed his work, and that of many others, was inspired by an upbringing in middle America, not moving there later and attempting to seem "Local"
