It's beautiful IMO when somebody gets up there and really sings it well, I'm not usually one for nationalistic fervor but I always really liked the star spangled banner as a song, beautiful poignant lyrics. When somebody sings it really well like Whitney Houston did and others have, it can't help but bring tears to my eyes.

Marvin Gaye's rendition was an original take on the song but I thought the timing and rhythm on the song was awful. The song had no musical compass aside from the lyrics. The idea was right but the execution needed some work.
The story goes that Gaye was trying to back out and trying to get them to have Luther Vandross take his place. He was in a dark place and was bingeing on coke and didn't want to do it.
Whitney Houston's rendition was incredible. _________________ You are under no obligation to remain the same person you were a year ago, a month ago, or even a day ago. You are here to create yourself, continuously. - Richard Feynman

Personally, I love that we stand for national anthems at sporting events, whether it's the USA, my home country of Canada or other. Especially when the fans sing along in the stands. That gives me chills.
The Whitney Houston Super Bowl anthem has to be one of the greatest US anthem performances I've seen. I love hearing the English soccer fans sing God Save The Queen and I even loved hearing Ronan Tynan's singing of God Bless America at New York Yankees playoff games. (And I'm not a Yankees fan!).
However, one of the greatest anthem experiences I've ever seen happened in Edmonton during the Stanley Cup playoffs in 2006. The singer starts the anthem off and then just raises mic because the crowd was singing in unison so loudly they didn't need to be lead by him.
If you care to check it out, here it is:
I get goosebumps and teary each and every time I see or hear that. Truly amazing!

Oh Canada is a love song. It's an ok tune but lacks depth.
Star Spangled Banner is a story, a monologue about the ever-present struggle between right and wrong. It's a masterpiece. _________________

Britain is never wrong.
Star Spangled Banner
O! say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
O! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust.'
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
O Canada
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada,
We stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
And since there would be no Canada or United States without England/Great Britain how about.....
God the Save the Queen (or King)
God save our gracious Queen,1
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen:
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us:
God save the Queen.
O Lord, our God, arise,
Scatter her enemies,
And make them fall.
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save us all.
Thy choicest gifts in store,
On her be pleased to pour;
Long may she reign:
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice
God save the Queen. _________________ Proud Tottenham Hotspur Football and Los Angeles Lakers Supporter

I don't think the anthem should be sung at all before sporting events _________________ At the risk of seeming ridiculous, let me say that the true revolutionary is guided by a great feeling of love. It is impossible to think of a genuine revolutionary lacking this quality
Some people only watch the Superbowl for commercials and halftime. I'm sure there are people out there that enjoy watching the star spangle banner performance.

My wife is one of them... she wants to know who is singing in advance and is so attentive until it's over; then she settles in for her Superbowl nap until halftime.

I like the way Cleveland sings the National Anthem. It's sung by the crowd. That's the way it was back in the day. Place your hand over your heart and sing.
I say forget the anthem and do this instead.LINK _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.
