Quote:
ESPN’s mock draft has the Lakers taking USC’s Davon Jefferson at No. 58, saying he has so much talent but “doesn’t know how to use it.”

Jefferson, a 6-foot-8 small forward, averaged 12.1 points and 6.3 rebounds as a freshman last season for the Trojans. He scored in double figures 19 times, including posting 25 points against UCLA and 23 against Oklahoma.

Whoever the Lakers take, with such a young roster, they have the luxury of stashing their draft pick either in Europe or the D-League for a year or two so they can develop more.

Anyone we pick at 58 is gonna be sent to the Pee-wee league. we don't need to develop any more young raw players especially since the Luxury of the pick is bad.

davon jefferson was arguably USCs best player this past season. i went to several of their games and OJ Mayo was decent, but davon showed a lot of potential. he's not really a bruiser, but he had great post moves. when USC hosted kansas i was at the game and mitch was there scouting!

From draftexpress:

Quote:
June 3, 2008 - We discussed during the pre-draft camp just how incredibly out of shape Davon Jefferson looks, and the combine results did nothing to dissuade that notion, as he came out measuring 12% body fat. A guy that clearly looked like one of the best athletes in the NCAA for most of the season seems intent on doing everything humanly possible to tank his draft stock—lifting the 185 bar just twice, running very poorly in the lane agility and ¾ court sprint, and to add insult to injury, measuring out an inch and a half (6-6 ½ in shoes) shorter than he was listed at USC. He showed almost no competitive fire when things mattered at the pre-draft camp. For a player who was never going to impress anyone with his skill level or intangibles, all this combined is probably going to cause him to go undrafted.

Yeah, I think he also had to sit out two years because he couldn't get his grades up to be academically eligible. He just sounds really lazy and not ready to put in any work.

The upside is he has a lot of natural talent, and if he gets any type of work ethic he could be a steal that late in the draft. I would be interested to know if the Lakers have ever had him in for a workout and interview.

He sounds lazy and kind of stupid, but if the Lakers do draft him, I'd put a stipulation in his contract giving him a huge bonus if he shows up to all the teams voluntary work outs and works out with Kobe.

^^That's the thing, is he going to put in the work. I've watched alot of USC games this season and loved Davon athleticism on the floor but he's been benched for disciplinary reasons also. to put it that he wasn't academically eligible mean his work ethic and attitude is poor. Seems like a player once he get some money, that's it. He's going to be content and not want to put in the work, IMO.

From draftexpress.com
Quote:
Strengths: Has an advanced offensive skill level for a high schooler ... Excellent face up game with an automatic 12-15 foot jump shot, and lethal first step which he uses to attack the rim ... He is great in transition, tip dunks, finishes very well ... Intiguing combination of size and athleticism ... At 6-8 he has inside/outside ability ... Knows how to play in the post and with his back to the basket ... Long arms allow him to play bigger than his size ... Good foot work and body control, really excels around the basket ... Tries to dunk everything ... Well developed muscular frame ... Long arms and extremely quick and agile for a player his size ... Excellent rebounder ... Good fundamentals as he boxes out and knows how to use his body and athleticism to his advantage when rebounding ... Nice shot blocker ... Capable of spectacular plays ...

Weaknesses: Has the size, quickness, and athleticism to be a terror on the defensive end but hasn't quite put it all together yet ... Jump shot can be streaky ... Not a threat from the three-point line ... Can get to the rim when he wants because of his size but will have trouble down the road if his ball handling skills don't improve ... Dominates on the high school level, but he's older than a lot of the competition ...

Doesn't some of these sound like Ariza? not to mention that Ariza is a true 6-8" forward...

2nd round promise? That would be odd.

More likely that he had no interest in trying to stay academically eligible for next year. Just hoping to get drafted so he didn't have to go to class anymore. Worst part is if he had just worked hard at basketball for 3 months he probably could have gone in the late first or early second round. As is he might not get drafted. Personally I pass. Maybe give him a summer league invite if he goes undrafted.

I don't think he's going to get drafted at all. And Jefferson had some good games but he was in no way our best player last season. It was clear that Mayo was.

or just maybe he wanted to drop in the draft. if you're not a round 1 pick you're not guaranteed a dime. so ..perhaps he wanted to make sure he could check the lakers out. ya never know. (of course he could just be super lazy)

I hope the Lakers explore trading the 58th pick for a pick next year. Otherwise, the'll probably look to go overseas with the pick. The Lakers don't have a lot of open spots and the ones they do are probably going to be for veteran players, not more young guys.

He's a much better talent than Ariza. Ariza is smaller than 6'8" and doesn't have anywhere near the athleticism and build of Jefferson.

If he had his head on straight he would be an upper middle 1st round pick.

Major league talent with a peewee league brain and attitude.

Ariza was a bigger gamble. There were also issues surrounding him also.

I don't think either Luc or Jefferson is going to make it in the NBA however if I had to pick one, I'd pick the greater talent in Jefferson.

If Luc's light bulb went on the best he would ever be is Bowen-lite. Jefferson has starter ability but it's unlikely after so many second chances imo that he'll ever amount to much.
