A song that truly represents that era of Top 40 Pop?

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun?
Purple Rain?
Come on Eilieen?
Physical?

Such a tough question to answer.

U2's With or Without You. Probably the only song that doesn't even sound like it's from the 80's

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - Time After Time was a much better song and showed people that she could actually sing
Purple Rain - Pretty much any song off the same album is better
Come on Eilieen - Not in the running
Physical - Ditto

Just about anything from Mike Jackson and Prince....

I think Rolling Stone named Purple Rain the album of the decade....

Given how often it is played on 80s stations or 80s retro playlists, you'd think "Jessie's Girl" was the song of the decade.

C'mon, keep it down to real choices like Blinded With Science.

I'd say U2 or Tears For Fears could take this on the serious tip. I agree that Prince is probably the most credible popular black artist, pop or not.

There are some artists I'd hesitate to include in a popcentric question. Eighties music is forever categorized vapid, tho still loved. The Living Years by Mike/Mechanics is a good song. High Life by Winwood. Pretenders were good, Chain Gang is still a fave. Rock The Casbah.

If you're going just straight 80s pop, early Madonna would be a major factor, her (bleep) from 84-85, especially. "I got Toby Wan, Toby Chan, Charlie (bleep) Chan goin in one ear and Madonna's big D in the other."

Rapper's Delight - although that came out in late 1979... the first big rap hit.

I don't know how one could choose a single song as the best of the 80's. Although I'm not sure I properly understand what you mean by the criteria "a song that truly represents that era of Top 40 pop", I'll choose one that I think fits the bill:

Tears For Fears - Everybody Wants to Rule the World

The tone and the imagery the song projects ooze 80's and the lyrics, to me, are a great representation of the times.
