We already had a thread about this a little while ago, and it doesn't "actually" start spinning the other way at all. Your mind interprets this 2-D image as spinning in 3-D, so it resolves in your brain as having one direction or the other. But there's nothing inherent in the image that prevents the same cues from being interpreted in your brain as spinning in the opposite direction in 3-D, so by focusing (or by going inattentive then paying attention), your brain can switch its default orientation, and suddenly the image is interpreted as spinning the other way. Spend a little time practicing, and you can do it at will (as I can).
BTW, here's another article on the same illusion from Steven Novella, who explains it very well:
http://www.theness.com/neurologicablog/?p=27
A quote from the article:
Quote: | The image is not objectively “spinning” in one direction or the other. It is a two-dimensional image that is simply shifting back and forth. But our brains did not evolve to interpret two-dimensional representations of the world but the actual three-dimensional world. So our visual processing assumes we are looking at a 3-D image and is uses clues to interpret it as such. Or, without adequate clues it may just arbitrarily decide a best fit - spinning clockwise or counterclockwise. And once this fit is chosen, the illusion is complete - we see a 3-D spinning image. |

I actually found a way to make it spin the oppossite direction on my command.... what I do is I like at the bottom of the picture then steer my eyes to under the picture then look up and look down. Every time I look up and look down to the bottom of the pic then to just under the pic back to the bottom of the pic, it switches rotation. _________________ LakersGround's Terms of Service

I was in the zone earlier man...
I tried blinking my eyes rapidly after staring at her extended foot (the one bouncing off the ground) and the shadow....
Every other time I blinked she'd change directions....
Can't seem to find that groove I was in though... _________________ 16 and counting.... |

By the way the man in the beans looks a lot like Joel Meyers..... LOL!!!

According to LarryCoon's article, there's no way an optical illusion can test your brain functionality
And you never answered my question. Where the (bleep) is he?!?!?!?! _________________ Double rings > Double rainbow |
