that movie was pretty awful... I just saw the new Rambo... it was a complete piece of crap that shouldn't have ever been allowed into production.

Most movies with Denzel are pretty overrated.

^ I'm not a macho guy... I thought it was a cheese-ball film with cool special effects. I'd rather watch the love story in the travesty also known as "Attack of the Clones." ok, maybe not.

Titanic seemed to be the only big film in a year of mediocre films, which accounts for its $$$.

I will give the filmmakers credit for breaking ground on a new type of film making though.

if it was just the biggest film that year why has no other film come even remotely close to touching it? Star Wars, the biggest franchise of all time had TWO different theatrical runs and still is 160M short. that statement is ridiculous.

if you can't see the difference in quality between Attack of the Clones and Titanic there's not much I can do for you.

I wasn't being serious about the Attack of the Clones thing...

Like I said, no film has come close to touching it primarily because of the paltry competition at the theaters that year. (However, if you adjust the gross for inflation, Titanic lands at No. 6.)

Add to the lack of competition, a rabid female audience - if you remember, there were newspaper articles about how primarily women were going to see Titanic over and over again - and the movie got an extended run in theaters.

Then there's the social fact that people didn't have the home entertainment choices they have now. In 1997, most people still used VHS. Now, most people I know prefer to stay home and watch an HD movie on their 40+ -inch TVs than go to the movies, let alone see a movie 7 or 8 times.

I think Titanic got lucky. It was in the right place at the right time, had enough hype because of its unprecedented production costs.

Put Titanic out in 2008 and it doesn't break the top 3 grossing movies of the year (The Dark Knight, Harry Potter 6, and Iron Man).

Both were superb screenplays. Pulp Fiction is awesome.

Haven't seen it yet. Too damn crowded, but yeah a lot of hype to live up to.

To Kill A Mockingbird

One of the greatest books in the past century...and the movie did it justice. That's hard to do. Great film.

Children of Men

Not sure I've seen a lot of overhype on this. Not enough to be overrated anyway.

Anything by Quentin Tarantino post-Pulp Fiction is pretty overrated.

Anything by M. Night Shyamasucks is absolute garbage post-Sixth Sense.

It was OK but I thought Blood Diamond was better and should have won best picture that year.

Brokeback Mountain, Good Night and Good Luck, A History of Violence, Junebug, The Squid and the Whale, Hustle and Flow, Match Point. Those were oscar nominated films that year that were MUCH better than Crash.

Not sure how you can say Jackie Brown was overrated, I thought that was one of his best films, and it is very under the radar. His work on Sin City was good too, and I wouldn't say Sin City was overrrated.

Personally, I liked the Kill Bills, but I can see how some can say they were overrated... but not Jackie Brown, no way.

How much do you want to bet I can throw a football over that mountain?

- that's the only good line from Napoleon Dynamite.

I never understood all the hype about Saving Private Ryan.

Blade Runner is not so much overrated as it is dated. I never saw it when it came out since I wasn't yet born. I saw it for the first time in 90s, and it looked good. These days, it just looks dated.

Gone with the Wind is overrated today but back in 1939 when it was released?

Well, Ocho, by those same standards, Gone With the Wind would have to be looked at in the same light since it's production values were top for it's day, back in 1939, no?

I'm not a fan of the film at all, but for it's day, I'm sure it deserved all the hype.

for the time yes but it doesn't really hold up i don't think. I understand the comparison between Titanic and GWTW, i just think Titanic is a better film. not to mention GWTW is 4 freaking hours. i don't mind a long movie but GWTW puts me to sleep. Titanic is 3hrs 17 minutes but it flies by.
