NEVER have I had to fast forward through anything remotely as much as I had to with that movie. And even still I was bored out of my skull for long spans.

I understand that in its time the effects must have been amazing, but really did they have to linger on each scene for such an agonizingly long amount of time? It felt like the movie was saying "here's a badass effect you've never seen! LOOK AT IT! LOOK AT IT! do you like it? huh? I DON'T CARE! keep looking at it! gaze in AWE at my mindbendingly astounding glory!!!"

It's a shame because you fast forwarded through the best film ever made. But it's precisely why that film could never be a hit today (it was a hit when it was released). Today's audience can't sit still and become absorbed into a film. The attention spans are too short. Where are the Spartan warriors? Why aren't any of these characters having sex? Will someone blow something up already??

2001 is about who and what we are in the universe. It's about how we evolved, what that meant, how we've created what we have and what the future may hold. Those special effects you mentioned are 40 years old and make films today look like a joke. There's a reason the pace is slow. That used to be acceptable before audiences demanded a cut every 3 seconds.

Scary Movie is overrated. I saw a screening of that movie and knew it was going to be a hit because of the reaction from the audience, but you could see the bathroom humor type jokes a mile away so I didn't find it as amusing. Unfortunately it's spawned a bunch of sequels and inspired other similar type movies like Epic Movie, Superhero Movie, Date Movie, and now the upcoming Disaster Movie. The attention span of the viewers must be really short if they already have a parody of this summer's movies coming out soon before the summer is even over.

Ocho, not all audiences today have short attention spans. 2001 was made way before my time, and it's easily one of the my top 25 favorite films for the reasons you mentioned. But I simply love all films made by Stanley Kubrick, with possibly the exception of Eyes Wide Shut.

By the way, did you ever like Barry Lyndon? I think that's easily one of his most underrated films.

it's not that nobody today can enjoy a film like that but it can't on a large scale. It wouldn't be a hit today like it was then.

For instance, the average shot length in 1969 when 2001 was a hit was 22.5 seconds. To be fair that year was a bit of a spike. But the years before and after, films had an average shot length of 11.5 and 13.5 respectively. The average shot length in 2007? 2.5 seconds. The quickest in history. Films today simply can't or don't allow themselves to settle down and tell a story. It's all in the cuts. Make it as fast paced and hyperactive as possible. The attention spans today of most people find anything that takes its time to be "boring" or "slow". I'm always dumbfounded when people fault a film for being slow without giving any consideration to the fact that some films are supposed to be slow. It's understandably unnatural in this day and age. Everything is quick and easy.

Barry Lyndon is a wonderful film. There's another one that is VERY slow paced but simply gorgeous and engrossing. I would revisit Eyes Wide Shut if I were you. It's a masterpiece. It does take time to digest. I think you'll see what I mean upon second viewing.

I watched it a few times... Pepto couldn't help me digest that.

Which is why I watched it several times.... I have tremendous respect for Kubrick. However, this film, didn't do it for me. Usually I like slow, thought-provoking movies... Don't know why this one didn't work for me.

Maybe it was the ending. Something about the way the movie was wrapped up so quickly and how it ended just seemed odd.

There are a lot of hot, nude women in that film. I don't need any Pepto for that.

There are alot of hot, nude women in porn too... Keeps me from having to wade through 2 hours of slow dialog to see it.

If you go to see Eyes Wide Shut to be sexually aroused you'll be disappointed.

Glad I'm not the only one who thought it was a good movie. 2001 I appreciate, but it's not the be-all-end-all, imho.

It's actually a pretty good movie if you fastforward about an hour.

It's about that time for me to revisit the film. I haven't seen it in some years, and I wouldn't mind giving it another chance. With some of his other films, I've almost worn out my DVDs of them. For example, Dr. Strangelove never gets old, and the humor remains fresh upon each viewing.

For some reason, I found Titanic to be very entertaining. I wouldn't exactly put it in my top 25 favorite films of all time, but for entertainment purposes, I wasn't as bored as others seem to be with it. In fact, when viewing it, the film seemed to zip along rather quickly and didn't feel "as long" sitting there.

Have you read the books?
I haven't. I'm just wondering, because as a stand-alone (have not read the books) film, it is the most epic thriller up till this point in time.

Pretty Woman
Forest Gump
Dark Knight
Juno

Annie Hall (I think it's funny and smart, but like Sex and the City, I don't ever buy that ugly guys and girls are getting laid, especially casually, by so many good looking people. Maybe that's just New York though....)

Saving Private Ryan
Full Metal Jacket (once you get past training camp it goes downhill)
Lord of the Rings (never read the books and still thought it was predictable, cheesy and done-before).
