Kevin Ding -

Quote:
It was Jan. 4, 2004, and the most memorable Clippers moment in the entirety of this intra-city “rivalry” occurred during a timeout at Staples Center.

The bright red fabric was held aloft, like a flag symbolizing hope for a better future. The thing was practically dancing because of the way its owner was turning it to and fro, reveling in the beat of the music and feeding off the roars from the crowd.

It was a designated Clippers home game against the Lakers – the only game in four meetings the Clippers would win in a season that would end with the Lakers in the NBA Finals and the Clippers at 28-54 – and everyone knew the implication.

On the back of the red Clippers jersey this fan was showcasing to everyone, looking as official as could be, was No. 8 … and “BRYANT” above it.

Six months later, the dream almost came true. Bryant tiptoed through the final hours still considering the Clippers’ free-agent contract offer before re-signing with the Lakers.

“I could see myself playing for the Clippers,” he said then. “Ultimately, it was in my heart to be a Laker. But it was a tough decision.”

The Clippers gave a big bag of the money earmarked for Bryant instead to Cuttino Mobley a year later. And when the Lakers play the Clippers tonight, the guy wearing the No. 8 red jersey will be Brian Skinner.

Inspiring stuff.

Until the Clippers establish any sort of sustained competitiveness, this “rivalry” will remain a charade. The Lakers get less – not more – fired up to face the Clippers. Beyond Lamar Odom’s psychological hang-ups over being set free by the Clippers in 2003, there are no subplots to draw fans in, either.

I tried to find some button on Bryant to push Tuesday that would kindle some sentiment regarding the Clippers.

Recalling Bryant’s wish from the not-so-distant past that the Lakers acquire his friend Baron Davis, I asked if Bryant had talked to Davis as he was deciding in July to join the Clippers (although ultimately not joining Elton Brand).

“I was excited for him,” Bryant said. “I know how much he loves it here. This is home for him. But when he and I talk, we just talk about other stuff – movies, music, fun stuff.”

Bryant was legitimately impressed by the Clippers’ push for him in 2004, with Elgin Baylor certainly a major cog in the operation. In light of Baylor being officially cast off by the Clippers this season and disputing the circumstances of his power getting played, I asked Bryant how involved Baylor was in courting him.

“I don’t know, I don’t remember and you’re not pulling me into that (stuff),” Bryant said brightly. “How about that? I’m not going for it. I’ll pass on the bait.”

When I laughingly tried to spin it into a simple question about how good the Clippers might’ve become with him, Bryant said: “No te entiendo” – Spanish for “I don’t understand you” – to make certain he wouldn’t have to talk about any of it anymore.

Bryant is not one for lingering on past events in any case, but in this case he truly has no reason to guess for a second that he might’ve chosen wrong.

The Lakers beat the Clippers by 37 points last March for one of their four victories in four tries against the Clippers. It was the worst beating in the history of the series … until the Lakers won by 38 a week ago in Davis’ home debut.

Four years ago, this is what Baylor said after Bryant decided not to jump ship: “We had every reason to believe our chances were just as good as the Lakers’ chances.”

There is no reason to believe anymore. Wouldn’t you agree, Elg?

Please. That's so unrealistic.

Realistic prediction:

Lakers 310

Clippers 92

The Clippers will be slightly better defensively now that Camby is back...but it's really not going to make a difference. I expect the Lakers to be a little rusty and slow in the 1st quarter but then pick it up afterwards.

Typical set up game for a letdown. Laker teams in the old days would kill this team by mid of qtr 3. Laker team prior to last year would play down and lose to this team. The Clipps will be much better tonight than last week, this will be a good character test to see how mature this team is at this juncture.

Take care of business Lakers, take care of business....

the Lakers teams of the good ole days didn't have to face Stern's controlled officials who are instructed to shade their calls to make things appear more competitive and pump up the excitement of the nba.

Yeah, it's hard not to be concerned with the refs after coming off that last game. Anyway, the key is keeping Baron Davis in check--we weren't able to shake the Clippers until we slowed him down. Thornton scored most of his points in garbage time of the last one too, so I can imagine he'll try to be more aggressive. You don't want to come out flat tonight considering the upcoming schedule.

I think we could see more managing of Pau and Kobe's minutes tonight, trying to keep them nice and fresh for Houston this weekend. Pau's been playing a little more than Phil would like, Sasha is ready to play now and Walton ahs only been getting 4.5 minutes a game. Look for Mihm to get a lot of minutes tonight int he 4th quarter if we are rolling the Clipps again.

Agreed.

Gotta keep them rested for a game in 4 days, especially when it's likely that the starters will have almost played 2 hours worth of basketball in the last 2 weeks.

Since the game is scheduled to start at 7:30, no, it shouldn't have started by now.
