Defensive Matchups

Bynum --> Brown
Gasol --> Wallace
Radmanovic --> Prince
Bryant --> Iverson
Fisher --> Hamilton

Give Kobe the assignment of chasing Iverson and making life hard for him, I think Fisher should be quick enough to chase Hamilton through those screens and draw those moving screen violations

[7:30 PM PST; ESPN & FSN West]

Did you just use Fisher and quick in the same sentence?

No way. put Fish on iverson. He can body him up. Kobe did an excellent job on hamilton last season. Pau's got to be disciplined on Sheed. He can't let him start hitting open 3s. If he catches fire look out, because when he's zoned in he doesn't miss.

I'm more worried about Detroit Bench players than their starters.

Maybe we should focus on shutting down the other guys and not letting them get open looks, and make Iverson beat us by himself and take like 25-30 shots. Over the years guys like Prince, Rasheed, and Hamilton has killed us with timely shooting.

I think we should put Bynum on Sheed. His length will bother him. Fish will guard AI. He did a great job on him last year in the playoffs. Kobe will take on the challenge of chasing Rip down and making it difficult for him to get open shots.

Bryant and Ariza can contain Iverson. The only threat is Tayshaun Prince, he could very easily hang 30 on the Lakers, with Radmanovic on him. But will his 30 points beat us? The guy that absolutely can't get hot is Rasheed Wallace.

Fisher has two chances of guarding Hamilton, slim and none.

No way, sheed is always in the perimeter so Bynum would have to get out there to defend him. Leave sheed to Gasol and Bynum in the zone, plus, if youre talking about lenght, i think that gasol will bother sheed better than bynum.
In other matchups, i will put Farmar guarding Iverson, itll be a good test and he may learn a lot. Ariza with his lenght and athletism can guard Prince and Kobe will have the hard task to chase Hamilton.
Or if you want Kobe to defend Iverson, you can play Sasha at the PG position. He is taller than Farmar and Fisher, and a good defender to bother Hamilton.

The defensive match-ups should be as follows:

Fish/AI: All Fish has to do is funnel AI into the jaws of the twin towers, and for all of Fish’s defensive flaws, he is good at executing that defensive strategy. I don’t like the idea of Fish chasing Hamilton. Besides, Hamilton would easily be able to shoot over Fish.

Kobe/Rip: Kobe has always done a good job on Rip, and he should have an even easier time of it because Detroit doesn’t run as many plays for Hamilton now that AI is on the team. I don’t mind Kobe guarding AI, but that should be saved for the 4th quarter.

Vlad/Prince: I think this is a good match-up for Vlad. Prince isn’t used to being guarded by a player who’s just as tall as him. It will be important for Vlad to stay locked in tonight, which has been a problem over the last couple of games, because Prince has been Detroit’s best player thus far this season.

Pau/Rasheed: I know some would like Drew on Rasheed, but Pau has done a good job of guarding perimeter-oriented bigs over the last two games (Dirk, West). Sheed is easier to guard on the perimeter than both those guys although he does have a better post game. It will be important for Pau to not shade over too much on guard penetration especially when Sheed is sitting behind the 3-pt line. The Warriors got burned last night at the end of the game because they gave Sheed too much room on the perimeter.

Drew/Kwame: Guarding Kwame will allow Drew to play free safety, and that plays right into the Lakers hands. Drew can feel free to protect the paint without worrying about Kwame scoring too much. Even if Detroit is able to create plays for Kwame with Drew helping out on D, it’s always a dicey proposition as to whether Kwame will catch the ball much less finish around the hoop.

As another poster mentioned, I think the bench is going to be the Lakers biggest concern. Farmar and Sasha are going to have their hands full with Bynum and Stuckey, who’s supposed to make his return tonight. Lamar is going to have to make sure that he’s not outmuscled by Maxiell. Finally, whichever big (Pau or Drew) plays with the 2nd unit has to make sure to keep Johnson off the offensive glass. Ariza is going to be the x-factor IMO since he has a height, length and speed advantage over Afflalo. Plus, he’ll probably be spending a lot of time guarding Prince as well.

Tonight might be a good night to have Sasha close the game in place of Fish especially if it's close in the 4th.

Pau did a fine job against Dirk and West, and even though Sheed is a better post threat, he's always been a reluctant post scorer. Even if Sheed does venture into the paint, he's going to have some problems getting good looks over Pau's length. With regards to Sheed's perimeter game, he's much less mobile than Dirk or West, so Pau just has to make sure he stays close enough to challenge the shot because Sheed really isn't a threat off the dribble the way Dirk and West are...

We better not lose or else our record won't seem so special after tonight.

If :

Detroit Beats the Lakers
Utah Beats the Bobcats
Boston Beats the Nuggets
Suns Beat the Kings
Knicks beat the Thunder
Blazers Beat the Hornets
Rockets Beat the Spurs

1. Celtics 9-1
2. Lakers 7-1
3. Cavs 7-2 0.5 Games Behind
4. Jazz 7-2 0.5 Games Behind
5. Pistons 7-2 0.5 Games Behind
6. Atl 6-1 0.5 Games Behind
7. Suns 7-3 1.0 Games Behind
8. Knicks 6-3 1.5 Games Behind
9. Blazers 6-3 1.5 Games Behind
10.Rockets 6-3 1.5 Games Behind

Hopefully we win by twenty and keep it moving.

It kind of hard to gain any separation this early in the season. There aren't enough games to build up any reasonable cushion. The Lakers just need to continue to lockdown on D, improve their offensive execution, which has been average at best, and they'll be fine.
