Of course he can't. That's fine. The team shouldn't be in the position of being in 1-2 possession games every night in the final minutes of the game. That's the mark of a .500 team, not a championship contender. We were like this a few years ago when Kobe had to carry the team all the time, and he actually had a really low percentage of hitting game winners then and he was shooting a low percentage even in the last few minutes. That's because his legs were dead.

Kobe can't be the hero every night. The team has got to pick it up or we're going to start seeing a lot more nights like this because Kobe will go into hero mode and he can't keep it up.

You know what though, I can live with close games so long as it's due to consistent defense. Right now the margin for error is slim, and even that's fine, but not with the style of play that has led to the small margin for error.

Unfortunately the Laker games have been close because it just turns into an offensive battle. That's not a winning style of basketball.

Close game with a consistent defense?

Yeah, I'm certain everyone would like our chances in that situation as Kobe wouldn't be as tired going into the last couple minutes and be as qualified as anyone in the league to close out the game, and with a consistent defense, could even afford to miss some shots.

Phil Jackson Interview:

-Not sure what to say, many disputable calls that changed the ball game, however Terkoglu and Nelson hit some big shots.

-Defensively we weren't aggressive or active enough.

-Kobe had some real good looks but some shots didn't go in. The message is that defense is what carries you night in and night out. Shots don't go in, you play defense and stop a team and we didn't do that tonight.

-(Re: Andrew's rebounding): It doesn't make sense. Andrew should be competing at Howard's level. Andrew had only 3(?) rebounds and Howard had like 20. Somewhere along the line, it's not right. If you're in the game you should be getting rebounds. There were a couple of times when he let someone else rebound the ball for him.

-(When asked if the Lakers turned into a jump shooting team in the second half): No, Kobe, Trevor and Lamar went to the basket. During the timeouts the emphasized trying to get the ball inside.

Trevor Ariza Interview:

-Lost because we got out-rebounded and they came through in the clutch and made big plays.

-(Regarding questionable calls down the stretch): You never know...The officials call the game and all we can do is play it.

-Thinks that while the Magic is a good team, we beat ourselves tonight.

-A lot of long rebounds got away from us, we didn't box out and they beat us on the glass real bad.

-Need to go back to the drawing board and figure out what's the problem.

After the HOU game, I said, "They played way too hard to play that weak." I hope that at one point it's clear to them that they can put winning distance between them and opponents well before the last few mins (and not lose big leads in mere minutes)...by playing consistent D. Kobe could've been sitting the last 3-5 minutes of the last 6-7 games, short on manpower or not.

We've never had a talented team THIS listless. People bring up the 3peat teams, they weren't as bad with this problem. They just didn't give a (bleep) about the RS. The current team honestly seems to care about winning each game enough that they'll expend a lot of effort all the way thru. The effort is wasteful, though, if not applied in the right directions.
