An elementary school teacher in Boston explains to her class that she is a Celtic fan. She asks her students to raise their hands if they, too, are Celtic fans. Everyone in the class raises their hand except one little girl. The teacher looks at the girl with surprise and says, "Mary, why didn't you raise your hand?"
"Because I'm not a Celtic fan," she replied.
The teacher, still shocked, asked, "Well, if you are not a Celtic fan, then who are you a fan of?"
"I am a Lakers fan, and proud of it," Mary replied.
The teacher could not believe her ears.
"Mary, why, pray tell, are you a Lakers fan?"
"Because my mom is a Lakers fan and my dad is a Lakers fan, so I'm a Lakers fan too!"
"Well," said the teacher in an obviously annoyed tone, "that is no reason for you to be a Lakers fan. You don't have to be just like your parents all of the time. What if your mom was a prostitute and your dad was a drug addict, what would you be then?"
"Then," Mary smiled, "Then I'd be a Celtic fan". |

The hate for the Lakers didn't really come until title #2 and didn't hit its peak until after title #3, but even then I don't think they were hated as much as the Celtics ... certainly the first team wasn't hated at all really (no more than any normal champ would be) and not even close to the disdain this Celtics team faces universally.
I will say that the 2004 Lakers were pretty hated... but they weren't champions and that was easy to spot due to Kobe's recent legal troubles and the Shaq/Kobe feud stuff.
The Celtics, like many of Boston fans in general, are just poor winners and everyone's picked up on it. It's more than just hating the guy on top (like it mostly was with the Lakers pre-Kobe legal troubles). You'd figure with three guys who have so much time in the NBA struggling with nothing to show for it that when they got their ring after all those years, and many bad teams, everyone would feel good about it... but that's not what happened at all.
KG's probably the main reason. Without committing some crime or doing something monumentally stupid in the media, I don't think anyone has ever been turned on quicker in such an extreme as people have done with KG. Paul Pierce's random inopportune comments and Kendrick Perkin's mug certainly don't help much either.
