PostPosted: Wed Feb 04, 2009 11:26 am    Post subject: Powell on Pierce?

I would think that Powell could slow down Pierce for stretches at a time. He is taller than Pierce so it would be hard to shoot over him, he's stronger than Pierce so it would be hard for Pierce to actually bully him around. Powell seems quick and strong enough to contain Pierce for certain stretches, but that would create a mismatch elsewhere, unless we have Odom/Powell in at the same time alongside Gasol. It would be interesting to watch.

I say let's throw a healthy Mihm on him and see what happens.

Powell was on Maggette for some time when we played the Warriors.

Pierce would kill him on the deep shot but I wonder if Powell could neutralize some of Pierce's "strength" advantage. I'm pretty tired of seeing him drop the shoulder into his defender and using it to push off. What's worse is he usually gets the call on that.

What????.....I'll tell you what happens-- Paulina goes for 40 and Mihm fouls out mid- way through the second quarter. Powell on Pierce not good either-Pierce too quick for Powell. Lamar or Powell on KG; Luke gets his 2 fouls on Pierce in the first five minutes then Trevor or Kobe for the majority of the game

I think he means to literally throw Mihm at Pierce.

I laughed out loud...

I don't think that pierce is to fast for powell. Of all of the "superstars" pierce is easily the least athletic

Agreed, I think it's something worth looking at for the coaching staff. At least I know Doc won't see it coming.

Oh i don't think it will happen. But it is interesting matchup.
Basically if Powell is out there and he is switched over to pierce off of a screen I think it would be fine.
again interesting to see how Powell would handle it.

I don't think it's a bad idea. It's similar to what Denver tried to do by using Kenyon Martin on Kobe. Kobe's way more athletic than Pierce so it didn't work as well but Powell is strong enough and fast enough to keep up with Pierce. Question is whether he will get enough respect from the refs to allow him to play some physical D on Pierce.

It's worth exploring.

pierce would foul powell out in 2 minutes

not saying powell cant stay in front of him but pierce has a way of drawing contact

I think we need Powell for KG, Big Baby Davis, and Powe--although he could possibly be effective on Pierce but Powell tends to stay close to the paint which is why he is such an effective rebounder and he wouldnt instictively cover Pierce on the 3 point arc.

We'd have to change his name to Fowell. You know how that's gonna turn out. Refs don't respect him.

And did an admirable job on him...As a matter of fact, in that game thread I asked the question, "Could Powell defend Paul Pierce?"

What Powell would be able to do is take away PP's post game...Pierce is decent at the dribble drive and catch and shoot, but he really kills us with his low post game...

I say try Powell on him and see if he can take that away....

It could work because Poweel is a good man defender who moves his feet and plays hard also Pierce doesnt have great foot speed he beats people off the dribble using his size and foot work. I would like to see this happen for short spurts of time Thursday.

Ariza on Ray Allen is a much more important matchup, IMO. Shut down Ray and Celtics will have hard time winning. Kobe on Paulina and Fisher on Rondo.

Kobe needs to guard Pierce and take it personally, just like he did when he faced Lebron.

Ray Allen is the cog that drives their offense. Look how he struggled in the playoffs in the east when he was contained defensively and struggled. Then he blows up against us in the playoffs.

And it coincides with the celtics streak that Ray Allen is playing great again. I hate that ugly smirk on him.

Mihm is completely broken. Mihm seems to be sporting two 50 pound ankle bracelets.

Missing those easy buckets tonight looked even worse when he got his own rebound and missed again.
