|
|
Phil on the Meyers and Hartman Show today (about 15 mins ago):
Quote: | - Said he was very surprised just like other Lakers fans that contract talks between Ariza's agent didn't go well. Says Ron Artest has more dimensions defensively but Lakers will miss Ariza's youth and speed. Said Ariza found a nice niche defensively with the Lakers last year.
- Said that he was glad the Lakers got Ron Artest. Talked how versatile Artest is on defense; he can play a variety of roles on defense - big or small. Says Artest is a strong shut down defender and does it well; and that's his calling card. Said he also has an accurate 3-point shot, and a good post-up player. Said he wanted to have a kind of player like Artest; was on his wish list for the last 3 years.
- Said he wants Lamar to do what's best for him. But says with the crazy market out there, Lamar may not get the level of money he wants, and he maybe forced to go to a team with less money. Says he wants Lamar back on this team; says Lakers really want him back here.
- Shared the story 2 years ago after the Lakers lost to Boston in Game 6, about how Ron came into the Coach Locker Room (only supposed to be accessed by the coaching staff) and told Phil that he wanted to help win a championship for him. Phil said thank you, and appreciated what Artest said. Then Artest left and went across to the Players Locker Room (for the team players only) and said the same thing to Kobe while he was showering. Phil said it left a good impression on both him and Kobe.
- Said coming in to coach again back in 2005-2006, he always knew that even though the Lakers were in "rebuilding mode" that Kobe was a wild card and knew that they could always contend. Phil wants to make sure that before he retires from coaching, that his successor will inherit a good team that can contend for championships.
- Talked about Bynum's maturity coming in sooner, and just in time to be able to win a championship.
- Said his decision to come and coach for another season wasn't because of money, but also about the guys inside that locker room. Jokes that his money all goes to the NBA anyway with all his fines complaining about the Refs.

After the interview, Hartman joked that he will still complain about Phil not calling timeouts. |

I like that part about Ariza going to both locker rooms to offer his services to help win titles going forward after the Lakers lost to the Celtics... ... funny... _________________ Rule = win titles

You meant Artest, but ya. I like that he talked to both Kobe & Phil like that, even though it was probably just "talk" at that point, and nothing more. |

You can tell Phil was uber excited about getting Artest. As if the vision of back to back or even another 3-peat is flashing before his eyes. _________________ The road back to the top... |

I don't know if Phil and Artest should be talking about this publicly. Artest was still under contract with the Rockets and this could be considered tampering. _________________ Take away Kobe's skills, leadership, intangibles, and rings and add a couple inches, 40 pounds, and some jumping ability...and you're left with Lebron. |

This conflicts with emplay's story that Ariza was plan A. If Lakers FO and players knew all along how badly Artest wanted to play for the Lakers, they were already willing to let Ariza go to begin with. |

How? Just because they were willing, doesn't mean that is what they preferred. They had another option. _________________ "Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships."

What? How does it conflict it when Phil himself said there were contract talks between Mitch and Trev's agent and it was unfortunate that it broke down???
Also, Artest has been wanting to play for the Lakers for quite some time. Right before he go traded to Sacto, he was at Staples watching our games. _________________

It's not like we gained an advantage. We lucked out with Yao's injury, it's that simple. |

It conflicts in a way that they were more than willing to let Ariza go knowing that Artest is ready to serve himself in golden platter to the Lakers once he was a FA. They didn't value Trev as much we thought. |

I remember during the playoffs this year i think it was against the nUggets or the finals against magic. Artest went to the game with Tyrese. Tyrese and him were sitting courtside and Tyrese twitted that Ron is a Laker fan even though he wont say it publicly. |

Yeah Tyrese sat a few rows in front of us and Ron was around schmoozing with a lot of folks for Game 1. The guy is where he wants to be... most importantly he *wanted* to be a Laker, no matter what it would take. |
