UPS is the coolest, but I cant imagine the announcers saying it when he dunks it. Showtime is my favorite out of the bunch.
Thats the thing about nicknames. You have to imagine which ones would sound the best if an commentator said it. Can you honestly imagine Stu saying something like Shanwow?

Seriously. That's (bleep) heresy. My guess is those that voted that way are on the young side and have no concept of what true Showtime is and it's irreplaceable status in Laker lore.
Though, in fairness to the voters who took the wrong route, it shouldn't even have been on the list.

Too many fans don't realize that TRUE nicknames happen because the players themselves bestow an occasional one on worthy players.
They think that everybody who steps on the court should have some cheesy manufactured one just because.

i get what you're saying but one of his first memorable plays was a block that got his team of the bench. there were several poster here who almost immediately made there avatars of the bench's reaction...kobe, et al. i loved the spontaneous gesture that all of those posters!
this kid has the hops and here in lakerland folks like the idea of giving a nickname.
sure, it would be great if and when he makes a great mark...post season mark would be sweet...
but there's been enough of an ado where he almost has to get one. though i like that he's humble enough to just say let the fans give him one.

Showtime, for the Lakers, is a team nickname. It would be pretty presumptuous of FSN to put that title on any one Laker. What a letdown to anybody who watched the Lakers during Showtime and could see an entire team put on a fireworks display, not just one player. Showtime was a dynasty no less. Even Kobe doesn't get "Showtime" to himself. If FSN starts calling Shannon "Showtime" they lose a lot of cred for many fans, particularly those who are not still in high school or who haven't just jumped on the bandwagon recently.
FSN's nickname list was mediocre at best. FSN: Let players give him a nickname or expand the list of choices before you put one on the air; you got lucky with "machine," don't get cheesy with "showtime." |

Yeah I get that whole thing. I would just rather have that than Go Go Gadget Calf Muscles. But I think we should let him pick his own name. The list is pretty bad.

He will end up being called Shannon Brown, and everyone will get over it. |
