PostPosted: Wed May 05, 2010 6:01 am    Post subject: Fun Sports Facts: Bo Jackson Vs Deion Sanders

I was over my boys place this past weekend to hang out , chill and watch the Lakers game. Well during half time, not sure how the subject came up, but we (there was a group of us) had a conversation about Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders, and if they ever played against each other while they were in the NFL and MLB. I think we all concluded that they never meet on the football field.... I think the overlap was only for a season or two, however baseball is a different story...

One of my boys said, it wasn't possible, Bo played in the AL his whole career and Deion played his whole career in the NL and when they played, there was no inter-league play. However, I vaguely remember Deion playing for the Yankees and vaguely remember a game they played against each where Deion hit an inside the park homerun, and Bo went yard in 3 consecutive at bats.

Well after some research, I was able to locate the boxscore for the game I vaguely remember... the game took place in July of 1990:

Some quick interesting facts about the game and players:

Both Bo and Deion played the same position, center field.
Bo Jackson hit three consecutive homeruns on three at bats before being injured; coincidently, his injury came on the same play Deion hit an inside the park homerun. Because of the (shoulder) injury, Bo was out of action for 6 weeks; upon retuning, he hit a homerun at his first at bat... hitting his 4th consecutive homerun, be it over a 6 week period.
Bo had 7 RBIs before leaving in the 6th with a shoulder injury, Sander was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs.
Hall of Fame George Brett was on base for each of Bo's homeruns.

Anybody know where I could possibly get a copy of this game? At the radio call? I think it would really cool game to have in the library.

Anyway, thought it was interesting sports fact, thought I'd share...

Do you remember this?

Bo Jackson's Raider 34 is the only jersey I bought and rocked... I only idolized two athletes growing up, Bo Jackson and Muhammad Ali.

I had three. Walter Payton, magic Johnson, and Ozzie Smith.

Naw, I don't remember that game, but props for finding the box score of it.

And Maj was the only other athlete I idolized.

Ozzie Smith was one of my fav's as well. Sugar Ray Leonard, Ozzie Smith, Jerry Rice, Magic, Bo Jackson and Barry Sanders... Frank Thomas was a later favorite.

It probably was a good thing that, Neon playing a dback never got the chance of trying to stop Bo as a running back.

The guy was running over linebackers.

It would of never come to that... we all know Deion wasn't one to try and hit/tackle somebody, let alone the freight train that Bo was. It would of been pure comedy to see!!!

Mine too.

Consider looking up his Autobiography: "Bo knows Bo" - he had a very intereting childhood, it gives good insight to his personality and what drives him.

I remember doing a book report on this way back in elementary school - that, and I have tons of his cards and figures.

Another fun fact... Bo Jackson was originally drafted by the Yankees back in 82, while he was still in high school... Bo opted for Auburn U. instead...

^lol I did a book report on that book too. My pops was a Raider fan so I grew up watching Bo and Marcus Allen.

I was never a baseball fan, but I do remember watching Bo's 4th homerun (after the injury). There was a lot of anticipation before the game about what he was going to do. If my memory is correct, it was right up center field.

Bo was unreal. A truly singular athlete. It seems a shame that Marcus Allen had to be pushed aside to make room for Bo but if you're a GM, how do you pass on a talent as incredible as Bo Jackson?

Now here's a question (that'll surely get people fired up): Who's a more remarkable physical specimen? Bo or Lebron? I'd have to take Bo myself because he had all the agility and overwhelming power to boot.

Bo. 6'1/235lbs./4.3 Forty. All Pro at BOTH football and baseball. Bron's a specimen, no doubt, but I don't know if he could play 2 sports at the pro level and play them at all star clip.

I say Bo as well... No way LBJ can duplicate Bo's college career, let alone pro career.... Dude was an Allstar in two sports.... At the same time!

I want to say he ran tracks as well, but that might be Hershal Walker (speaking of a phyiscal specimen) Im remembering...

I think Bo did in fact run track. I remember reading that somewhere.

This is what I got off Wiki...if true, then DAMN!

Quote:
Jackson qualified for the 100 meter dash in his freshman and sophomore years. He considered joining the USA Olympic team, but sprinting would not gain him the financial security of the MLB or NFL, nor would he have sufficient time to train, given his other commitments.

What if he DID go out for sprinting? Can you imagine him and the guy I consider to be the single greatest athlete of all time - Carl Lewis - battling it out for about 5-7 years? DAMN!

DAMN!

Damn... he had World Class speed like that!

Just found this:

My favorite Bo story....

Quote:
From behind the wheel of an obscenely muscled Dodge pickup, Vincent Edward "Bo" Jackson is reminiscing about the time he took down a 300-pound bear from point-blank range with a .45-caliber pistol. This was a decade ago in Alaska, a few years after Bo retired from organized sports and a few days before the Princess of Wales died in a car crash, and if you're wondering whether Bo was scared, hell no, Bo was not scared. Not even when that bear got so close Bo and his hunting companion could see the hairs bolt upright like pine needles on the back of its neck.

The way Bo tells it, he waited as long as he could, then he fired a slug into that bear's skull. The bear kept coming. His buddy yelled, "Shoot him again!" and Bo shot him again, firing another bullet directly into the bear's noggin. Bo 2, Bear 0. And then Bo skinned that bear on the spot and dragged the 70-pound hide the half-mile back to camp. Of course he did.

Awesome.
