Lakers lose in worst way
Poor play angers Jackson and Bryant and leads to a loss against lowly Charlotte.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – When you can do almost nothing your coach and your star player ask, you can lose to the worst team in the NBA.

And the Lakers didn't just lose, 112-102, they helped make Charlotte Bobcats history Friday night by allowing the Bobcats to lead from start to finish for the first time in the franchise's 11/2 years of existence.

It happened despite Charlotte having lost 13 consecutive games and playing without top players Emeka Okafor and Gerald Wallace. It happened because Lakers coach Phil Jackson and NBA leading scorer Kobe Bryant (35 points on 12-of-18 shooting, five assists) couldn't get their messages across despite spending most of the game alternating between directing and rebuking players.

Odom Can't Provide a Lift
By Mike Bresnahan, Times Staff Writer

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — At or near the top of the Lakers' growing list of troubles is the unclear health status of forward Lamar Odom.

The Lakers' second-leading scorer could barely raise his arms Friday because of torn rib cartilage. He has not slept well and was told by Laker trainers to try to avoid coughing or sneezing for fear of causing further discomfort.

"It doesn't feel good at all," said Odom, who sat out the Lakers' 112-102 loss to Charlotte. "I couldn't even put on deodorant this morning."

Odom, averaging 14 points, 9.4 rebounds and 5.3 assists, said he hoped to return Tuesday against Dallas, although Coach Phil Jackson was less optimistic.

"We have no idea how long it's going to take," he said. "One game, two games, we can't comment. Maybe this whole trip and then maybe all the way through the All-Star game, who knows? We just have to cover for him."

The Lakers have three more games on their current trip and six more games overall until the All-Star break.

Ronny Turiaf's request for a work visa has been approved, making him eligible to play for the Lakers next week.

A French citizen born on the Caribbean island of Martinique, Turiaf will appear Monday in Toronto to sign appropriate paperwork. He had to leave the country and then re-enter it again, as per terms of upgrading his student visa to a work visa, a Laker spokesman said.

"He should be eligible to play," Laker spokesman John Black said. "At that point, it becomes Phil's decision."

Jackson indicated it might be a while for Turiaf, who has not been scrimmaging with the first or second teams at practice.

Trapped in 'Cats' cradle

Bobcats snap losing streak

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The box score will show Kobe Bryant finishing with 35 points on 12-of-18 shooting Friday night against the last-place Charlotte Bobcats. What it won't show is the frustration evident for Bryant after the most inexcusable loss of the Lakers' season.

The Bobcats snapped a 13-game losing streak with a 112-102 victory over the Lakers, totaling a franchise-record 40 points in the first quarter and taking the ball out of Bryant's hands with one double-team after another in the fourth quarter.

As he put it afterward, Bryant was "zoned in" during the third quarter, converting six long jumpers from all over the court as the Lakers closed to 88-84. The Bobcats never had led a game from start to finish in their two-year existence - until Friday, that is.

Bryant had no choice but to give up the ball in the fourth quarter with the Bobcats sending two and three defenders at him every possession. The results were less than encouraging as the Lakers hit 4 of 17 shots in the final period and lost.

"I expect those shots to go down," Bryant said. "They didn't fall for us tonight. Hopefully, they'll fall for us the next game.

"This is the game plan guys are going to continue to deploy against us. You have to be ready to step in and take the responsibility and the accountability to knock those shots down."

Odom struggles with rib injury

By Ross Siler, Staff Writer

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Lakers forward Lamar Odom isn't expected to play again until Tuesday night's game against Dallas at the earliest, with the rib injury he suffered showing little improvement Friday.

Odom sat out his first game of the season and said he couldn't put deodorant on in the morning because he still is struggling to lift his arms. But Odom did say he felt a little better after receiving treatment later in the day.

"I definitely knew right away when I woke up," Odom said. "It didn't feel good at all. It's probably an injury that I just have to let get better."

Lakers coach Phil Jackson started Devean George in Odom's place and had Kobe Bryant move from the wing to the backcourt. George finished with 12 points on 2 of 9 shooting while Bryant had to play 41 minutes, including the entire second half.

The possibility exists that Odom won't play again on this road trip, which still has three more games to go. The Lakers are now 0-3 this season playing without either Bryant or Odom.

"We have no idea how long this could take," Jackson said. "One game, two games, we can't comment. Maybe this whole trip. And then maybe all the way through the All-Star Game, who knows. We just have to cover for him."

'Cats and 13 Are Bad Luck for the Lakers
# Charlotte scores 40 points in the first quarter and ends losing streak, 112-102. Former Laker Jones has 31 and Mihm injures shoulder.

By Mike Bresnahan, Times Staff Writer

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Where once there were habits of deep playoff runs and annual victory parades snaking through downtown L.A., there is now less palatable, less celebratory behavior by the Lakers, who are suddenly in the business of ending other teams' losing streaks.

Two nights after allowing the Indiana Pacers to halt a six-game skid, the Lakers were drilled by one of their former players and kindly let the Charlotte Bobcats end a 13-game drought.

Jumaine Jones, traded by the Lakers to the Bobcats in October for a second-round draft pick, had a career-high 31 points, and Charlotte stunned the Lakers, 112-102, Friday at Bobcats Arena.

Playing without Lamar Odom, the Lakers had an abysmal showing against the team with the worst record in the league, turning the ball over a season-high 24 times and giving little thought to defense, particularly in the first quarter, when the Bobcats scored 40 points.

Friday marked the first time the second-year franchise ever led from start to finish without relinquishing the lead in their 130-game history.

Lakers continue road trip vs. Hornets

The Lakers try to put the brakes on a two-game losing streak when they play the fifth contest of a season-long seven-game road trip. On Friday, Jumaine Jones came through with a career-high 31 points as Charlotte ended its franchise-worst 13-game losing streak with a 112-102 home victory over the Lakers.

Kobe Bryant finished with 35 points and nine rebounds in the loss to Charlotte for the Lakers, while Smush Parker scored 19 points in defeat.

Lakers rare victims of Bobcats
BY JENNA FRYER
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Published Saturday, February 04, 2006

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Jumaine Jones swears there was nothing personal about his career night against the Los Angeles Lakers.

If there was any doubt, he erased it by taking a bag of gear into his former team's locker room for Kobe Bryant to sign for him.

Jones, traded from Los Angeles to Charlotte in late October, scored a career-high 31 points to help the Bobcats snap their franchise-record, 13-game losing streak on Friday night with a 112-102 shocker over the Lakers.

"It's definitely a big deal that I had a good game against the team that traded me," Jones said. "But we had a 13-game losing streak. I just wanted to get a win. That means more to me than anything."

WIN FOR L.A.-EX

Former Laker Jones comes through for Bobcats
Exactly what you expected: Some guy with a Los Angeles Lakers connection churning out points all night, holding his team together through whatever, then walking away with a smug grin.

No, not Kobe Bryant. Jumaine Jones.

The ex-Laker had a career-high 31 points Friday, including five three-pointers, to carry the Charlotte Bobcats to a 112-102 victory against his old team. This broke a 13-game losing streak, the longest this season in the NBA.

Jones was traded to Charlotte early this season, once it became obvious he had no place in the Lakers' rotation. Considering how that team is hurting for scoring options beyond Bryant (35 points), the decision now looks curious.

"You're going to get that extra energy boost against the team that traded you," said Jones, who was 13-of-20 from the field and had nine rebounds.

It took a performance like this to end the streak. The Bobcats never trailed, opening a 7-0 lead, then surviving a 3-of-11 shooting slump early in the fourth quarter.

Lakers humbled yet again

Bobcats 112, Lakers 102: Lowly Charlotte snaps a 13-game skid as LA falls to 1-3 on its road trip.

01:57 AM PST on Saturday, February 4, 2006

By BRODERICK TURNER / The Press-Enterprise

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - It's becoming a nightmare of a road trip, with the losses mounting, the frustration setting in, the Lakers getting beat by all sorts of teams.

On Friday the Lakers' seven-game journey made a stop in Charlotte, where the Bobcats, the team with the sorriest record in the NBA, entered with a 13-game losing streak and missing four key players.

Luke Walton and the Lakers struggle, committing 23 turnovers against Kareem Rush and Charlotte.

Even with a day to rest and prepare, to mull over Wednesday's loss to an Indiana team that had lost six straight and was missing four top players, the Lakers still were not up to the task, losing 112-102 to fall to 1-3 on their trip.

It was Jumaine Jones, a former Laker, who did in LA with a career-high 31 points. Brevin Knight (15 points, 10 assists), rookie guard Raymond Felton (16 points, 8 assists) and center Primoz Brezec (22 points) also were up to the challenge for Charlotte, which earned its first win over the Lakers.

Kobe Bryant had 35 points but just four in the fourth quarter, missing all three of his field-goal attempts as the Bobcats double- and triple-teamed him.

Smush Parker (19 points), Chris Mihm (15) and Devean George (12), who started in place of injured Lamar Odom, carried much of the Lakers' scoring load. But the Lakers' reserves missed 15 of 18 shots.

Notebook: Odom out 2 weeks?

01:55 AM PST on Saturday, February 4, 2006

Broderick Turner

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Lamar Odom missed his first game of the season Friday night against the Charlotte Bobcats because of sprained cartilage between his ribs, and Coach Phil Jackson suggested it could be two weeks before Odom can return.

Odom still finds it too painful to lift his arms and wasn't sure if he would be able to play tonight when the Lakers play the Hornets in Oklahoma City.

The Lakers have two days off after that game before they play the Mavericks in Dallas. Odom said he might be better served to wait until then.

"I can play through pain," Odom said. "When I'm able to lift my arms, I'll play. I'm just achy in my chest. I can't sleep, can't lie on my side."

Jackson didn't want to put a timetable on Odom's return.

"Maybe all the way through the All-Star game. Who knows?" he said.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Desmond Mason wanted to pressure Kobe Bryant on the defensive end. Bryant just wants his teammates to take some pressure off him on the offensive end.

Mason scored 21 points and Chris Paul added 19 points and 13 assists Saturday night, leading the New Orleans Hornets over Los Angeles 106-90 and past the Lakers in the Western Conference standings.

"I just wanted to be aggressive and try to put some pressure on him, make him foul," Mason said. "Try to just put pressure on him, make him play defense on that end of the floor and try to wear him down, try to run a little bit.

"I think that's what you need to do with a guy like that who can play offense like that. You just have to wear him down a little bit, and I think we did that."

Mason, guarded much of the game by Bryant, beat the Lakers star twice on New Orleans' first three possessions and the Hornets never trailed. They moved two games above .500 for the first time this season and passed the Lakers for seventh place in the West.
