Thanks Fish, but you should've retired at the end of last year. You pushed your luck and forced management to make the decision for you.

That's not really showing your "appreciation"...

Everyone marvels, and rightfully so, at Kobe's unbelievable ability to play through injury after injury- in his own way, Fish's streak of consecutive games represents the same iron will. He was the epitome of professionalism, and in this age of the prima donna athlete, one of the last throw backs to the golden age of professional sports.

We love you Fish! You will forever be one of the greatest Lakers of all time.

... or to quote JRR Tolkien:

“All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.”

Everyone, including superstars like Lebron James, could stand to learn fearlessness, character, professionalism, and leadership from Derek Fisher.

Fisher will always be a Laker great in my book. I'd love to see him back with the organization as some kind of assistant coach or something along those lines. Kobe could use the influence of an old friend.

Definitely. I hope he's like the next Brian Shaw. At least his speeches would be valuable.

I will NEVER forget what Fisher did for this franchise. He is and always has been a class act on and off the court. To say I'm going to miss the guy is a HUGE understatement. I think it hasn't quite sunk in yet for me but will once playoff time comes around.

Fisher is and always will be a champion and a Laker and I hope he finds his way back to the team whether as a coach or announcer sooner rather than later.

It was time to move on but it still hurts.

Good luck #2. You hung on too long, but so would all of us if we could.

Fish was a great Laker, but there comes a time, when NBA Players have to retire or change roles..

I hope Fisher can sign with the Heat, that would be a fitting way for him to ride off in the sunset...

Here's something Lazenby linked earlier, a Derek Fisher predraft report:

http://cgscoutperspective.blogspot.com/2012/03/derek-fisher-before-lakers.html

Typical Jerry West pick, a total unknown that was overlooked. Even Lakers fans considered him an afterthought as he came up with Kobe, not to mention that we already had an All Star starting at PG. Hell, even our freebie first rounder Travis Knight grabbed more PT, praise and attention. Yet in the end character and dedication triumphed.

Fish has the heart of a warrior. He always left it all on the court. I will miss having him on the Lakers and wish him the best. Fish is smart and has good basket ball IQ. I see him starting his next career in coaching. You will always be a Laker Fish. I wish they would hang your Jersey at Staples.

Yeah, I want to thank Derek too, for showing how selfish he is by not reporting to the Rockets. Fisher made a contribution to the Lakers over the years, but he would still be here if he would have asked for a backup role. He got what he deserved.

Who remembers Fisher sending a message to Luis Scola? That was a great memory.

My 3 year old cried when I told him Fish was not a Laker anymore.

I would consider myself a big Derek Fisher fan, having first seen him alongside Kobe at those summer league games at the Pyramid back in 1996. Nevermind Kobe, who was a showstopper, but Fish was impressive as well.

He was a glue guy, one of those players who brought cohesiveness to the team, both on the court and in the locker room. But I wouldn't get so carried away to say Fish should have his number retired and hung from the wall.

I would put Fish's value to the Lakers on par of a Happy Hairston, Mychal Thompson, Michael Cooper, Bryan Shaw, Rambis, etc., guys who brought hard hats and lunch pails to work. None of these guys are HOF'ers or Laker wall guys, but their contributions to the Laker championships were irrefutable and their ability to play big when it counted became their distinction.

If I were Jeannie, I'd give Derek a fan appreciation night when he officially retires, but I'm not breaking concrete and erecting a D Fish statue anytime soon.

I would love to see Fish play on a contending team. If he wins a ring, it would be Fish 6, Kobe 5, Shaq 4 unless, of course, the Lakers can pull it together and win now. He deserves some bragging rights, even if it might be temporary.

But I think Fish has a higher calling somewhere down the line and I don't think it's on the sideline. I could see him filling that empty Ronnie Lester chair or getting pulled into corporate world. It's apparent to me he definitely has some chops as a business man.

Unlike so many other basketball players who never planned beyond their basketball careers, Fish has a wide open court full of opportunities because of his intelligence, his devotion, and his character. He'll be fine.
