Thank DB!

It's great as ever to read your analysis of the game. LO has been looking very good lately.

It appeared that when teams are trying to "stretch" Kobe on the high screen - he's just splitting the double teams during this game. Wondering why he didn't do that in the Kings game
All depends on how they play him. He likes to split it, but they can tighten that and make it hard to split.

Is PJ trying to light a fire under Cook's butt, while trying to integrate Turiaff into the playing rotation? Or is PJ saying - play 150% for 24 minutes and don't coast for playing the entire game (probably good advice to Smush)
I think he's trying to figure out what buttons to push with Cook. Cook responded so PJ may go back to that again (despite the turnovers by Ronny). In fact, I think Ronny has been kind of used to leverage both Kwame and Cook into playing better.

What was Smush thinking on the last play of the game, he wasn't guarding KG or Marcus Banks - he did have a good seat for the last shot?!?! FYI: Smush does have the talent when he is being aggressive, just like LO!
This was another brainlock moment for Smush. He didn't even try to recover... good thing that sucker didn't go down.
Regarding Kobe "splitting" the double teams" on the high pick&rolls, if they prevent him - isn't the counter is to have the other Laker (preferably either LO or Cook) "pick&pop for a clean shot for Cookie and/or "pick&roll" with LO where he "slips" the pick/screen and dive for the basket? If so, why didn't the Lakers execute it at least a few times - especially since LO creates mismatches for the opposing teams?

Question: Did Cook get "infected" with the dreaded "LO Disease" of always being "mellow" while playing balling?!?!?! Hopefully Cook will (just like what LO is doing more now - along with Smush) start attacking the basket with "mean attentions" and DUNKING the ball, which will open the perimeter shots for him. It will be interesting if PJ (again) has Turiaff in the staring lineup in the next game - since it DID get Cook's attention. Do you think that Cook has the endurance to play the entire game as a starter - even in games that he has started, he has gotten into foul trouble early in the game that pretty stopped him from getting any kind of rhythm. Maybe playing half a game will allow Cook (and the coaches) not have to think about fouls (even if gets 2 to 3 quick ones) and to play at a higher energy level - hey, maybe he can come of the bench as one of the "hired guns" (offensively) to give the Lakers a spark - along with DGeorge (when he returns)

Question: Stu stated that with Kwame and Turiaff, there wouldn't be much offense. I agree that there wouldn't be many (if any) set plays for them, but hopefully they will get their "hustle points" in the way players like Shawn Marion/Ben Wallace (in the old days) and others have gotten their points - by hustling and crashing the boards. Turiaff definitely committed rookie mistakes, but by playing him at the beginning of the game - it minimized the consequences while getting Rony comfortable playing with the 1st team. Do you think that when Mihm is able to play that Turiaff will spend time as one of the starters, since they won't be as concerned with scoring with Mihm on the court?

Question: Smush commits some of the silliest fouls. In addition to the last play of the game, there was a play where it was a high P&R resulting in KG rolling towards the basket and Smush tried to block an athletic 7 footer's dunk shot from behind?!?!? Definitely a case of "Brain Cramps?!?!?!" Maybe Sasha needs to get more PT from Smush at selected times cuz Sasha does provide persistent and annoying defensive pressure on opposing PGs. What do you think needs to happen to MOTIVATE Smush to develop fundamental basketball skills and (of course) the focused mindset to be a good basketball player? As stated by James Worthy on Fox stated that MJ had (obviously) all the talent in the world but still needed to constantly work on his fundamental basketball "skills" that allowed his talents to shine - should somebody "persuade" Smush to take this lesson "to heart?!?!" Playing on the playground is DEFINITELY different than playing for championships - just ask Stephen Marsbury or Steve Francis after watching Kobe display great footwork to score the key basket of last night's game - LOL

Note: For those people who think that Kobe has a recent series of "bad games" - the vast majority of the other NBA players wish that their stats on the BEST GAMES come closs to Kobe's "bad games" and he still produces during crunch time/end of games?!?!

Defense, Defense, Defense...

Marcus Banks (18 points and 8 assists) was driving the TWolves attack, getting penetration, scoring, setting up others. Late in the game, Phil switched Kobe onto him defensively and it cooled him off...good thing because he was wide open to tie up the game from three and airballed.

Banks led the TWolves scoring because KG was held to just 16 points on a poor 4-14 shooting. Kwame, once again, provided some lockdown D on one of the league's better players.

Vujacic -- -- I don't know if the Lakers will make a run at Banks in the offseason...they might since it was said that they offered a second-rounder for him this year. If you look at the spark that Banks gives the TWolves versus what Sasha gives us, you can see the punch we are missing at the guard spot.

Just a note for all those posters who said Banks was a POS and would never be a good NBA player!

Smush ...He helped force a turnover on Davis, which led to a bustout and Smush scored a layup high over KG on the break.

That was a legit finger-roll that Gervin himself would've been proud of... not one of those scoops posing as finger-rolls, but the real honest-to-goodness McCoy.

Thanks, DB.

Marcus Banks is a good player, but the jury is still out if (at this time) that he would be a good match for the Lakers considering that he's commiting the same mistakes that Smush and Sasha are making while not under the harsh glare of the Lakers' fans!?! DFish was really taking it to Marcus Banks and he's not a premier guard - imagine what guards such as Nash, T. Parker, Billips, et. al would do to him. Smush has shown the potential of providing some firepower, while (IMO) that Sasha will in the very near future. Sasha and Bynum need to have some time for their bodies to mature and to upgrade their fundamental basketball skills.

I always think back to Rambis' comments that this team is young and dumb whenver the Lakers are struggling. I don't know whether patience is all we need with this team if some of them just won't learn enough.
