Lakers starting to find form with Christmas victory

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Lakers beat the New York Knicks for their biggest victory of the season, but coach Mike D'Antoni wasn't breathing a sigh of relief on Christmas.

"You know the NBA season … it spirals out of control easily and we got high expectations," D'Antoni said. "We just got to keep getting better."

The Lakers are better off than they were a couple weeks ago. Despite a slow start to the season that saw Mike Brown fired and D'Antoni chosen over Phil Jackson to replace him, the Lakers have used a five-game winning streak to improve to 14-14. With Steve Nash back running the offense, D'Antoni is still hopeful of delivering on the championship aspirations befitting a roster this talented.

"It's not an easy position to be in," Nash said of D'Antoni taking over the Lakers. "Everyone expects the world out of this team.

"On paper it looks easy, but it's not. But no training camp and with a team that wasn't really in position to play [up-tempo], let alone wasn't mentally conditioned to play this way, it's a little tough transition for us."

Lakers vs. Knicks draws big ratings for ABC

By Eric Pincus

December 26, 2012, 11:47 a.m.

The Lakers' win over the New York Knicks on Christmas Day (100-94) brought in big television numbers, according to ESPN/ABC.

The 5.9 overnight rating was the best ever for ABC in the "early window of a doubleheader" on the Christmas holiday. Last year's Boston Celtics/Orlando Magic matchup in the same time slot brought in 5.3.

Locally, the game had the sixth-best rating for an NBA regular season game on ABC at 11.9. In New York, the game brought in a 9.2 rating, which is the third-best regular season game in the market.

The Clippers hosted the Denver Nuggets in the evening, bringing in a 2.0 overnight. While that's significantly lower than the Lakers/Knicks game, it ranked as the second-highest "ESPN Christmas Day prime-time game ever."

The second ABC game, featuring the Oklahoma City Thunder visiting the Miami Heat, actually out-drew the Lakers/Knicks with a 6.0 overnight rating, the fourth highest-rated NBA regular season game ever on the network.

The Oklahoma City market certainly tuned in with a 23.2 rating, highest ever on ABC in the area.

Rihanna, Chris Brown Spend Christmas Together At Lakers Game

Rihanna and Chris Brown made their first public appearance together in years, spending Christmas Day at a Lakers game in Los Angeles.

Rihanna and Brown were seated courtside at the New York Knicks versus Los Angeles Lakers game at the Staples Center on Tuesday, according to Us Weekly. They were "laughing and chatting" and "looked happy together," a source told the magazine.

Dwight Howard's Health Holds the Key to Lakers' Championship Hopes
By
Tyler Conway
(Featured Columnist) on December 26, 2012

Dwight Howard may not have missed a minute of action in the 2012-13 NBA season due to injury, but that doesn't mean that the Los Angeles Lakers' star is fully healed from his back surgery last April.

In a candid interview with USA Today's Sam Amick, the 27-year-old center admitted that his recovery is still very much a work in progress:

I'm still in that [healing] process. People don't understand that. They just come out and see me make a couple dunks and blocks and say, 'Oh, he's back.' But it does take a while for all this stuff to heal. This is not something easy, so I understand that. It will come.

While Howard's candor is a refreshing surprise, his lack of health is the opposite of that. All realistic pundits knew it would take time for Howard to return to form—especially after his recovery went so slowly.

However, Howard still being admittedly less than 100 percent has to be scary for the Lakers' championship hopes.

No, the Lakers are not adding Derek Fisher. Or anyone else.

Kurt Helin

Dec 26, 2012, 3:02 PM EST

Steve Nash is back for the Lakers and that means less Chris Duhon and Darius Morris. Which is good thing for the Lakers offense.

But plenty of Lakers fans saw Derek Fisher ask out of the Dallas Mavericks and say, “we should totally pick him up, he could help us.” Which is absolutely not true, but you can understand Lakers fans soft spot for Fisher, so they look past his slipping play and terrible defense now.

But the Lakers see what he is now and they aren’t picking him or anyone up, reports Marc Spears of Yahoo Sports.

Lakers Look Like Lakers Again

By Jeremy Gordon

Perhaps Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash will be allowed to wear the classic Lakers gold again when their team stands fewer than eight games behind the Clippers.

Basketball isn’t the most traditional of Christmas sports. But with hockey on indefinite hiatus and football relegated to weekend, the gap in the schedule is one NBA commissioner David Stern is too pragmatic to avoid passing up. It’s a chance to provide another distraction for families both happy and unhappy–along with flu-ridden, couch-bound relatives like this Fixer–and an opportunity to showcase some of the league’s most impressive teams. As the lifeless Rockets-Bulls blowout proved, it’s not always a bet that pays off across the board. Otherwise, it was a slate of games that portended real changes in the state of the league, on top of being an excellent way to avoid talking about exactly how dry the ham was.

Welcome back, Steve Nash

December, 26, 2012
Dec 26 2:17PM ET

By Beckley Mason

Steve Nash's floater has been accurate since his return from a broken leg.

Since coming back from his leg injury, Steve Nash has helped the Lakers to wins over the Golden State Warriors and New York Knicks -- the Lakers' best victories of the young season. Nash has averaged 14 points and 10 assists in those contests and infused the Lakers with a greater sense of organization and purpose on offense.

Here's a look at what Nash has been up to since his return:

Shooting running one-handed floaters

The Lakers’ first two points on Christmas came off a Nash running floater on which he picked up his dribble just behind the free throw line and casually, delicately lofted the ball in without ever touching it with his off hand. Nash has a way of performing trick shots like that one with an earnestness that suggests he’s practiced the shot hundreds of times.

The Lakers gutted out their fifth straight win, defeating the New York Knicks on Christmas Day (100-94).

Now tied for 10th place in the Western Conference, the Lakers are just a half-game behind the seventh-place Minnesota Timberwolves as well as the Denver Nuggets, who are tied for eighth. The Lakers visit Denver on Wednesday with a chance to pass the Nuggets in the standings.

"It was an important win for us. We're a little bit desperate," said Steve Nash of the team's performance Tuesday. "We've got to get on a roll and not only improve as a team, but while we're improving and figuring things out, we need to win some games."

Kobe sets Christmas mark as Lakers win fifth straight

December 25, 2012

LOS ANGELES -- Oscar Robertson, move over.

Christmas has a new king.

Kobe Bryant scored 34 points to become the NBA's career Christmas Day scoring leader, and he lifted the Los Angeles Lakers to their fifth straight win, a 100-94 victory over the New York Knicks at Staples Center.

Los Angeles trailed 80-79 with nine minutes to play before Bryant sparked an 8-0 run, scoring six points, and the Lakers never trailed again.

The Lakers (14-14) visit the Denver Nuggets (15-14) Wednesday night, playing on the second night of a back-to-back after beating the New York Knicks (100-94) on Christmas Day.

The Nuggets also played Tuesday in the nightcap at Staples Center, losing 112-100 to the Clippers. Denver is a half-game ahead of the Lakers in the standings.

The two teams met previously this season on Nov. 30 in Los Angeles as the Lakers won easily (122-103) despite playing without Steve Nash. Dwight Howard scored 28 points while collecting 20 rebounds. Antawn Jamison had his best game as a Laker with 33 points and 12 boards.

The scheduled back-to-back may be harder on the visiting Lakers, even if they arrived ahead of the younger, more athletic Nuggets on Tuesday.

D'Antoni dishes on Nash's minutes, defense

December, 26, 2012

ESPNLosAngeles.com

DENVER -- There is no doubting the impact Steve Nash had on the Los Angeles Lakers' offense in his first two games back from the fractured fibula in his left leg, but there are still two areas of concerns for many Lakers fans: Nash's minutes and his defense.

Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni shrugged off both of those issues before L.A. played the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday night.

When asked about Nash averaging 39.5 minutes in his first two games back, which allowed him to get to his 14.0 points and 10.0 assist averages along with the Lakers scoring 109 points per game, D'Antoni said he's keeping an eye on Nash's playing time more out of concern for public perception than his point guard's health.

"Yeah, because I will get killed if I say no," D'Antoni said with a chuckle. "He's only 38, come on. Here's how I look at it: I agree, we should get it down to about 34 [minutes per game]. Is three minutes playing better than having a day off the next day? I'm pretty liberal about giving him a day off and don't practice him and making sure he is ready to go. Is it better to go ahead and practice for an hour and a half or give him three minutes on the floor? I go the other way. I think it's more important that he plays, obviously. But, we will watch it, and as [Steve] Blake comes back and we get a little bit more comfortable about where we are, then I can cut it down a little bit more."

Lakers at Nuggets: Live updates

By Eric Pincus

December 26, 2012, 6:46 p.m.

Nuggets 57 - Lakers 54 (halftime)

Turnovers (eight) and missed free throws (7-14) hurt the Lakers but they managed to keep close to the Nuggets.

Pau Gasol scored 13, hitting a pair of three-pointers (a shot he said he's been practicing to fit into the offense). Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with 15.

Steve Nash struggled with foul trouble, dishing six assists in 13 minutes before committing his third.

The Lakers had trouble staying in front of Ty Lawson who had 11 points and six assists. The Nuggets shot 43.4% from the field while the Lakers shot 46.7%.

Kenneth Faried had a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards in just 18 minutes.

Lakers lose to the Nuggets, 126-114
Dwight Howard is ejected in the third quarter and the Lakers' longest winning streak of the season ends at five.

By Eric Pincus

December 26, 2012, 8:43 p.m.

Nuggets 126 - Lakers 114 (end of regulation)

The Lakers gave up 69 points in the second half to the Denver Nuggets, falling to 14-15 on the season. The Nuggets shot 54.5% from three-point range (12-22), led by Corey Brewer's 27 points in just 24 minutes.

Dwight Howard was ejected in the third quarter for a Flagrant 2, committed against Kenneth Faried. The Lakers never fully recovered, although a fourth quarter run nearly got the team within five.

Instead, Metta World Peace missed a lay-up and Danilo Gallinari hit a three-pointer to put Denver back up by ten.

The Lakers shot 49.4% from the field but the problem on Wednesday night was their inability to get stops. Six Nuggets scored double figures. Ty Lawson had 17 points and 14 assists. Faried scored 21 and grabbed 15 rebounds.

Kobe Bryant scored 40, topping the 30-point mark for the 10th straight game. Pau Gasol had 19 points with five assists and even hit a pair of three-pointers.

The Nuggets climb to 16-14, with a dominant 9-1 home record (best in the league).

The Lakers play again on Friday night at Staples center, hosting the Portland Trail Blazers. Flagrant fouls can be accompanied by suspension. Expect the league to make a ruling either way before the Friday.

Rapid Reaction: Nuggets 126, Lakers 114

December, 26, 2012
Dec 26
8:43
PM PT

DENVER -- Heading to the altitude of Denver for the second night of a back-to-back after playing at home on Christmas looked like a tall task when the NBA schedule was released in the summer. The challenge proved to be too much for the Los Angeles Lakers, who had their five-game win streak snapped and fell back under .500 at 14-15.

How it happened: After the Lakers kept things close in the first half, Denver exploded for a 39-point quarter in the third, with Corey Brewer (27 points) surprisingly being the one doing most of the damage. It was the same type of big quarter that teams like Houston, New York and Oklahoma City had hit the Lakers with back before their five-game win streak and it was discouraging to see, especially considering their defense looked so good in the fourth quarter Tuesday when they held the high-scoring Knicks to just 16 points.

What it means: The Lakers had a chance to go one game over .500 for the first time since they were 6-5, but will have to try to restart their momentum after facing their first bit of adversity since Steve Nash returned. Also, L.A. is now just 5-9 on the road, which needs to improve if the Lakers are going to make a run at getting a decent playoff seed.

Lakers' Pau Gasol steps up three-point game Wednesday night

He makes two three-point shots in the first half of the game against the Denver Nuggets. He had taken only 11 three-point shots previously this season.

By Mike Bresnahan

December 26, 2012, 11:16 p.m.

DENVER — Hey, if you can't beat the system, join it.

Pau Gasol hasn't exactly been the perfect fit for Mike D'Antoni's push-the-pace offense, continually finding himself away from the basket.

So he's shooting more often from three-point range, and succeeding.

He made two three-point shots in the first half of the Lakers' 126-114 loss Wednesday to the Denver Nuggets. He missed one in the third quarter.

Before Wednesday, he had taken 11 three-point shots this season and only 49 total since the Lakers acquired him in February 2008.

"It's a shot that I can take a couple times a game," Gasol said. "Some nights, some are going to go in. It's a lower-percentage shot, but tonight a couple went in. That was good."
