Lakers Legend James Worthy Is Selling Los Angeles Home
by Kristine Hansen - realtor.com

Just a few days after signing on to help coach the Los Angeles Lakers, James Worthy—a seven-time NBA All-Star dubbed “Big Game James” who snagged three NBA championships and was the No. 1 draft pick in 1982 for the Lakers—put his home in Los Angeles on the market for $2,195,000.

The four-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom Mediterranean-style home in the gated community of Bel Air Crest is slightly under 4,000 square feet. It was built 25 years ago.

Byron Scott defends conditioning-heavy practices
by Mark Medina - dailynews.com

The Lakers players stood hunched over along the baseline, eager to catch their breath for any free second they had. But they soon heard the sound from Byron Scott’s whistle that meant only one thing.

They needed to run again.

The guards and post players sprinted separately with varying distances. The drill always started and ended at the baseline. The distance traveled varied from the free-throw line, half-court, the free throw-line at the opposite side of the court and the opposite baseline.

Once it ended, the players gasped for air. Every bead of sweat and every grunted noise revealed the strain of a physically demanding three-practice.

“It’s mental,” said Scott, the Lakers’ coach. “You have to think, ‘I can’t allow anyone to be in better shape than I am.’”

But with the Lakers hoping to avoid last season’s nightmare that entailed missing an NBA-record 324 games to injury, should Scott tone down his practices?

by Nathaniel Lastrapes - lakersnation.com

The Lakers will go into their second preseason game looking for redemption against the Jazz after they gave the game away in the second half of their first action.

In their first exhibition game, the Lakers shot poorly from the field, but the play of their new additions was encouraging. D’Angelo Russell showed poise in his starting role, Julius Randle crashed the boards with ferocity, Roy Hibbert anchored the defense and made things difficult for the Jazz in the paint, and Lou Williams showed promise of being a scoring threat for the second unit.

Jazz Projected Starting Lineup

Kobe On Michael Jordan Comparisons: ‘My 37 Isn’t MJ’s 37′
by Corey Hansford - lakersnation.com

As Kobe Bryant enters his 20th season with the Los Angeles Lakers at the age of 37, the constant comparisons to the legendary Michael Jordan have continued. Jordan, of course, returned to the NBA at the age of 38 with the Washington Wizards, but was far from his prime self.

Bryant, however, doesn’t believe the Jordan comparisons are valid as he told Sam Amick of USA Today that their experiences were not the same:

My 37 (years old) isn’t MJ’s 37 (when he returned after taking two seasons off to play for the Washington Wizards), you know what I mean? Nor is it the same team or the same system that he was playing in. It’s much, much different. There’s really no barometer, no (precedent) for training physically, for recovery. It’s unchartered territory.”

Game Recap: Julius Randle, Roy Hibbert Shine In Lakers Overtime Loss
by Jolene Nacapuy - lakersnation.com

After dropping their first preseason game of the 2015-16 season, the Los Angeles Lakers (0-1) were back in action Tuesday night, as they faced the Utah Jazz (1-0) once again, for their last game of two, at Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, Hawaii in another sellout game.

The Lakers managed to keep things steady at the beginning of the first game of the preseason Sunday, trying to find some type of rhythm and led by six heading into the second half. The team soon fell behind, as they struggled to get shots in and were handed a 90-71 loss.

This time around, the Lakers hoped to keep the momentum going and show some improvement, both offensively and defensively, to stop the Jazz throughout the game.

D'Angelo Russell exits after hard fall, suffers bruised glute
by Baxter Holmes - espn.go.com

Los Angeles Lakers rookie guard D'Angelo Russell, the No. 2 overall pick in this year's draft, left Tuesday's preseason game against the Utah Jazz with a bruised glute that he suffered after crashing to the court in the first quarter.

Russell, who is 6-foot-5, went down after absorbing the brunt of a drive to the hoop from 7-foot-1 Jazz center Rudy Gobert with 7:42 left in the first quarter at the University of Hawaii at Manoa's Stan Sheriff Center.

Russell remained on the court for several minutes while teammates and Lakers trainers gathered around him. He was taken to the locker room soon after.

A Lakers spokesman said that had it been a regular-season game, Russell could have returned, but the team elected to sit him out for precautionary reasons.

Bryant, Randle impress in loss to Utah Jazz
by Bill Oram - ocregister.com

Perhaps the moment 34-year-old Metta World Peace dove over the bench in pursuit of a loose ball we should have known this wasn’t going to be the typical preseason game.

The Lakers lost 117-114 to the Utah Jazz in Honolulu, an overtime defeat that came with several layers of drama.

There was an apparent injury to D’Angelo Russell that turned out to not be as serious as it looked. A Jazz player took a swing at Roy Hibbert. And on the basketball front, both Kobe Bryant and Julius Randle looked like stars – Randle an emerging one, and Bryant an established one who’s still got it.

A few notes from Honolulu, where the Lakers will practice a final time on Wednesday before heading back to the mainland:

D’Angelo Russell Updates On Glute Injury: ‘I Wanted To Get Back Out There’
by Ryan Ward - lakersnation

Rookie D’Angelo Russell gave fans, coaches and his teammates quite the scare on Tuesday night. Russell fell hard to the floor after trying to block Rudy Gobert’s shot by the basket and remained on the floor for some time while clearly in pain.

After witnessing Julius Randle go down with a season-ending injury in the team’s first regular-season game last year, everyone had a reason to be concerned by seeing Russell in pain on the floor.

Fortunately, the injury wasn’t serious and Russell actually wanted to get back on the floor against the Jazz. Russell tried to make his case, but Gary Vitti and company wanted to take a cautious approach, according to Lakers reporter Mike Trudell:

Russell: "“I feel fine, man. I wanted to get back out there, but Gary Vitti and (staff) said they didn’t think it would be a smart idea."

A hero in the Philippines, Jordan Clarkson looking to raise his profile with the Lakers
by Bill Oram - ocregister.com

It was 2:30 a.m. and the Lakers would practice twice that day, but Jordan Clarkson was keeping an eye on a basketball game being played on the other side of the world.

China and the Philippines met in the final of the FIBA Asia Championship on Saturday with a bid to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro on the line. Clarkson, whose mother is Filipino, has vowed to play in Brazil if the Philippines can qualify.

They didn’t Saturday, losing to China, 78-67.

It was something of a national controversy in September whether Clarkson would be able to participate in the tournament.

It’s a quick transformation for Clarkson, who as a lesser-known college player was practically begging for a shot with the Philippines national team.

“I contacted one of the coaches once,” Clarkson said, “and we just talked for a little while,” Clarkson said. “But that was it.”

Ultimately, it conflicted with the Lakers training camp in Hawaii and Clarkson was unavailable.

After being drafted No. 46 a year ago, Clarkson emerged as a key member of the Lakers’ core by averaging 15.8 points in 38 starts. That stateside success helped make him a hero in the Philippines. Before Clarkson arrived, the national team had to rely on players well below the NBA talent threshold and Andray Blatch, the former Washington Wizards forward, who became a citizen in 2014.

Now the country has a full-fledged star of its own, one with honest-to-God Filipino heritage.

“I’ve been over there twice now since being in the NBA,” Clarkson said. “And they’ve opened up to my family. Even in the states I get love from a lot of Filipinos.”

What is good for the Philippines is also good for the Lakers.

Lakers’ young players soaking in Kobe’s feedback
by Mark Medina - dailynews.com

The attentive Lakers players eagerly pulled up a chair. They sat around Kobe Bryant, ready to soak in every word that came out of his mouth. The Lakers’ star then talked, fueled by both his teammates’ endless questions and his own desire to share his wisdom.

For all the significance training camp has on Bryant to build his rhythm nine months after having right shoulder surgery, the week-long excursion here also brought another development for No. 24.

The trip afforded Bryant both time and convenience to hold frequent fire-side chats with his younger teammates after practices.

“Whenever he’s talking, I try to gather around and listen,” Lakers rookie point guard D’Angelo Russell said. “I could listen to him all day.”

The Lakers do not have the luxury of listening to Bryant for that long.

Entering their second exhibition game against Utah on Tuesday at Stan Sheriff Center, the Lakers have had three two-a-day practice sessions in the past week. Each session has lasted between two and three hours. Bryant’s daily routine typically involved an early-morning workout, a pre-practice shooting session and post-practice icing and massage treatment.

But Bryant and various teammates revealed he has held informal conversations during post-practice meals, some that teammates said lasted 2 1/2 hours.

“There’s a generational gap, but the universal language is the game,” Bryant said. “These guys are thirsty for knowledge.”

Lakers From The Outside: The Kobe issue
by Baxter Holmes - espn.go.com

Kobe Bryant runs into the noise, the deafening roars and the thumping music blasting throughout Staples Center.

"And at the other guard, 6-foot-6, in his 21st campaign from Lower Merion High School ..." arena announcer Lawrence Tanter bellows, but he's drowned out by a thunder of cheers.

An injury-free Bryant buries a contested jumper just after tip-off, and as he sprints and cuts, shaking 25-year-olds like he has for decades, it's as if he, at age 38, is not only beating Father Time but turning back the clock.

The game ages into the fourth quarter, the score tight, and, as usual, the ball finds Bryant's hands, just like old times, and he comes through, once again, sending the crowd into a frenzy. It's another game-winner, another highlight for the all-time reel.

Could it get any better?

Such a turn of events would be a godsend for some Lakers fans, many of whom worship at the altar of Bryant. Numerous people around the NBA, however, say Bryant deciding to play beyond this upcoming season would be the Lakers' worst nightmare.

"They've got to get rid of Kobe," a scout said.

"You let him walk," an agent said.

"Get rid of Kobe by whatever means necessary," an executive said.

The Lakers may have a bright future, but they're a mess right now
by Paul Flannery and Tom Ziller - sbnation.com

Paul Flannery and Tom Ziller are discussing every single NBA team in this Flanns and Zillz marathon leading up to the 2015-16 season.

ZILLER: It fills me with immeasurable glee to have reached the Lakers portion of the program. We have Kobe Bryant, Lou Williams and Nick Young sharing one ball (unless I missed an inspired rule change over the summer). We have the big prize of the summer being Roy Hibbert instead of Kevin Love or LaMarcus Aldridge. We still have Byron Scott. We still have Jim Buss.

I'm going to be honest, though: I don't see L.A. being a total embarrassment. Hibbert and Brandon Bass should offer some defensive toughness -- and you know Scott is going to play his vets. Given the backcourt depth (admittedly of questionable quality), Swaggy might be out of the rotation by Thanksgiving. (Kobe and Lou are getting big minutes, and it'd be foolish not to play plenty of Jordan Clarkson and D'Angelo Russell.)

This isn't a playoff team -- not even close in the West. But 35-plus wins seems reachable to me.

FLANNERY: Considering the state of the franchise and the fanbase's notion of exceptionalism, mediocrity may be the best revenge. The Lakers: They're just like everyone else!

This is such a strange step in their process. For the first time since the halcyon days of the Lake Show, they actually have some intriguing young players. And yet they've got veterans either blocking their progress (like Bass with Julius Randle) or soaking up the spotlight (cough *Kobe* cough). What's the end game here? Middling results disguised as "progress?"

I don't think we should casually dismiss what happened over the summer, either. Aldridge's meeting was a disaster and Love didn't even bother with the process. I think this is actually a dangerous time for the Lakers. They need to pick a direction and get on with it, whether that means changes at the top or the roster construction.

Los Angeles Lakers 2015 roster: Kobe, D'Angelo Russell lead interesting group
by Satchel Price - sbnation.com

The Los Angeles Lakers enter the 2015-16 season looking radically different from a year ago. From the return of a healthy (if aging) Kobe Bryant to offseason additions like No. 2 overall pick D'Angelo Russell and center Roy Hibbert, Los Angeles made moves in the hopes that this season doesn't end up like the last.

There is indeed some thought that the Lakers are onto something after struggling through the past two years. Russell is a potential star and joins second-year players Julius Randle and Jordan Clarkson as building blocks for the future. Hibbert isn't too far removed from being one of the best defensive big men in the league. Lou Williams, reigning Sixth Man of the Year, is sure to bring some added offensive punch.

And of course, there's still Kobe, Nick Young and Metta World Peace, who will ensure that every Lakers game will be entertaining regardless of how good the team is.

This also underscores that the Lakers are a franchise with one foot in two camps. The team has worked hard to build up some young talent in Russell, Randle and Clarkson, yet veterans like Bryant, Hibbert, Williams and Brandon Bass will play pivotal roles. That should be enough to make the team competitive, but it could prevent the Lakers from keeping the top-3 protected first-round pick they owe to the 76ers.

Still, there's some positive momentum building for Los Angeles, and the team should be a major player in free agency next summer with a ton of big money off the books. This is a transition year for the Lakers, but it should still be fun.

An aging Kobe Bryant, for once, doesn't want to be compared to Michael Jordan
by Kelly Dwyer - sports.yahoo.com

In a few weeks, Kobe Bryant will become the first NBA guard to play in his 20th season, a remarkable accomplishment for any player, much less one counted on in his prime to act as the league’s best player.

The hope, for his rebuilding Lakers, is that in spite of three consecutive season ending injuries (a torn Achilles, followed by a broken kneecap and then torn rotator cuff), Bryant will be refreshed during what could be his last year with the Lakers. He’s played in just a quarter of all potential regular season games over the last two years, that’s got to aid those weary legs, right? And, at 37, he’s even younger than Michael Jordan was when MJ came back to work up two solid enough seasons for the Washington Wizards in 2001!

Not so fast, Kobe Bean reminds. From a talk with Sam Amick at USA Today:

“This is uncharted territory,” he said. “My 37 (years old) isn’t MJ’s 37 (when he returned after taking two seasons off to play for the Washington Wizards), you know what I mean? Nor is it the same team or the same system that he was playing in. It’s much, much different. There’s really no barometer, no (precedent) for training physically, for recovery. It’s uncharted territory.”
(#actually MJ turned 38 eight months before his first game with the Wizards so …)

As we’ve talked about with LeBron James, Kobe and his preps-to-pros ilk are genuinely working in “uncharted territory.” LeBron will have far, far more miles on his legs at age 37 than Kobe will (presuming he decides to play that long), but even with two and a half years’ worth of injury woes, Kobe still has quite the minutes resume under his belt.

Brandon Bass to have follow-up exam after knee X-ray is inconclusive
by Eric Pincus - latimes.com

After an inconclusive X-ray, Lakers forward Brandon Bass' left knee will undergo further tests on Friday, according to the team.

Bass took a hard fall, banging his knee into the court in the Lakers' overtime exhibition loss to the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night in Hawaii.

The team is traveling back to Los Angeles after training camp and two preseason games (both losses to the Jazz). Bass will likely have an MRI and CT scan, performed by team doctors.

Lakers like first glimpse of Metta World Peace
by Bill Oram - ocregister.com

At least he didn’t shatter into a million little World Pieces.

When the former Ron Artest dived over the Lakers bench in pursuit of a loose ball Tuesday night – in a preseason game! – it was fair to wonder just what he was thinking.

Metta World Peace, 34, knows that an October injury likely keeps him from making the Lakers regular-season roster, and that such a development could very well mean the end his days in the NBA.

So, why not take it a bit easier?

That would be so unlike Metta.

World Peace returned took the court for the first time in two years as a Laker and made his preseason debut in Tuesday’s 117-114 loss to the Utah Jazz in Hawaii. He finished with 7 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists in 21 minutes.

He also, the record shows, used only four of his six fouls.

But hey, it’s only the preseason.

World Peace’s presence, as expected, was felt most on the defensive end.

The Lakers trailed by as many as 19 points in the first half, but with World Peace on the floor they cut it to one by halftime.

“I think it started with Metta,” Coach Byron Scott said. “As soon as he came in the game in the second quarter, he just turned it up. And it fed off of him.”

Lakers players advocate for World Peace, too.

Jordan Clarkson works away to improve his play
by Mike Bresnahan - latimes.com

The daily clusters of media members ran from Kobe Bryant to Julius Randle to D'Angelo Russell to Metta World Peace to Nick Young.

It was understandable. Each player had his own storyline for this season, be it redemption from injury, the hope of youth or rehabilitation of a career.

Practically ignored during the Lakers' nine-day Hawaii stay was Jordan Clarkson.

He can't offer the allure of high draft position (46th overall, 2014). He doesn't fill 140-character spaces with amusing one-liners. He's trapped in the interstitial of being neither today's new promise nor tomorrow's honored retirement.

Even Roy Hibbert gets more attention, fitting into the on-court image rehab concept.

It's unusual to see a player taken for granted after only three successful months on the job. Clarkson was handed the Lakers' point guard position last January and followed through with averages of 15.8 points and five assists in 38 games as a starter.

He was a rookie then and only 23 now, apparently old enough to understand the humor in his lack of headlines.

"I can be quiet and not in the way and then make noise on the court. That's what my plan is," he told The Times after one of the Lakers' practices ended. He smiled when the various constellations of interviews were pointed out to him, microphones and TV cameras in front of seemingly everybody but him.

"I don't care about none of that stuff, man," he said. "I come here and work hard and try to win games. I don't get into everything else."

Lakers glory years gone, but Inland Empire fans still have Ontario arena
by Ryan Carter - dailybulletin.com

It’s an L.A. Lakers moment etched into Steve Eckerson’s mind.

The scene: Citizens Business Bank Arena — Ontario, California.

The moment: Fourth quarter, tied preseason game. Crowd going crazy.

Significance: None.

But that didn’t seem to matter to Kobe Bryant, then in his early 30s and as spry as ever.

There he was. Not at Staples, with Jack Nicholson looking on. Not at Madison Square Garden, with Beyonce and Jay Z courtside. Nope. There he was, the legendary Kobe, back in a technically meaningless game, 40 miles east of downtown L.A. — to help his team win in overtime, Eckerson said. It was a simple exhibition game — a tune-up for the regular season.

But that’s just it. It wasn’t meaningless.

For Kobe and for scores of Inland Empire Lakers fans who filled the arena to watch their team, it was huge.

“They stayed to the end,” Eckerson, the arena’s general manager, said of the fans. “They cheered like it was a playoff game.”

And Kobe played like it, he added. He just wanted to win. Classic Kobe, Eckerson said.

Jordan Farmar’s Advice To D’Angelo Russell - ‘Be Ready For The Bright Lights’
by Trevor Lane - lakersnation.com

Jordan Farmar knows what it’s like to feel the pressure of playing basketball in Los Angeles. He grew up in Woodland Hills, and starred at Taft High School before moving on to UCLA. Following a stellar college career, he was selected by the Lakers with the 26th pick in the 2006 NBA Draft, allowing him to continue playing in the city of Angels.

Farmar would end up playing two stints for the Lakers (2006-2010, 2013-2014) and helped bring home two championships during that time. Given that Los Angeles can be laser-focused on their Lakers (and UCLA, for that matter), Farmar understands better than most what it’s like to have the eyes of Los Angeles on you.

Now, with Farmar plying his trade in Israel, there is a new young point guard that seems poised to rule the city: D’Angelo Russell. The second overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft has struggled so far with injuries and adapting to the NBA game, as his Summer League play featured an endless string of turnovers (5.2 per game) and his lone full preseason game was solid, but not spectacular.

Farmar, in a recent interview with Shlomo Sprung of SheridanHoops.com, had this advice for Russell:

Jordan Clarkson's Development Key
by Maxwell Ogden - hoopshabit.com

The Los Angeles Lakers are entering one of the most important seasons in franchise history. Kobe Bryant could be entering his final year, No. 2 overall NBA Draft pick D’Angelo Russell is coming to town and 2014 Top 10 pick Julius Randle is on pace to be healthy after missing all but one game a season ago.

Through it all, the most important player on the roster may be the man being most commonly overlooked: Jordan Clarkson.

Clarkson was a draft-night acquisition by the Lakers in 2014. He was selected at No. 35 overall by the Washington Wizards, but Mitch Kupchak acted fast and found one of the Lakers’ few bright spots from 2014-15.

Clarkson made 59 appearances, starting 38 and averaging 11.9 points, 3.5 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 0.9 steals in 25.0 minutes of action per game.

In a tale of two halves, Clarkson struggled to find the floor before the 2015 All-Star Break. As his playing time increased, however, Clarkson evolved into a local fan favorite, averaging 16.7 points, 5.4 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 1.0 steal after All-Star Weekend.

The question is, can he evolve into the player Los Angeles needs to be along a crowded perimeter?

Lakers Vs. Raptors Preview
by Alan Huerta - lakersnation.com

After dropping their first two games of the 2015-16 preseason to the Utah Jazz in Hawaii, the Los Angeles Lakers (0-2) are still in search for their first win as they fly back to California to face the Toronto Raptors (1-1) in Ontario, CA. However, although being winless, the Lakers showed a sense of grittiness and toughness in the second game that wasn’t seen all of last season, but still fell short in an exciting 117-114 overtime loss. The team looked better across the board as they got strong contributions from Roy Hibbert (16 points, 11 rebounds), Julius Randle (16 points) and Lou Williams, who led all scorers with 20 points. Kobe Bryant also looked sharp, scoring 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting in under 21 minutes of action.

The only scare came with 7:42 left in the first quarter when rookie D’Angelo Russell took a hard fall on a foul he committed against Rudy Gobert that caused him to miss the rest of the game with a bruised glue muscle. The fall looked worse than it actually was, but head coach Byron Scott decided to take precautionary matters and not take his chances on the second overall pick of this year’s draft. His status for Thursday’s game is questionable.

Lakers see positive signs in loss to Toronto
by Mark Medina - dailynews.com

The pieces appear to come together with every moment the Lakers play together.

Kobe Bryant has continued shedding off his rustiness. Julius Randle has continued exerting his dominance. Jordan Clarkson has continued showcasing his growth.

Yet, the Lakers have still lacked two things through exhibition play.

They have yet to pick up a win, the Lakers’ 105-97 loss to the Toronto Raptors Thursday at Citizens Business Bank Arena marking their third consecutive loss in preseason play. The Lakers also do not have a fully healthy lineup.

The results from an MRI and CT scan showed Lakers forward Brandon Bass has a bone bruise in his left knee, leaving his status as day-to-day. Lakers guard Marcelo Huertas missed his second consecutive game, while the Brazilian native finalizes immgiration papers in Vancouver.

The most high-profile absence, however, involved Lakers rookie point guard D’Angelo Russell. He sat out Thursday’s game because of a bruise in his glute stemming from a fall in Tuesday’s game against Utah. Russell immediately left the game early in the first quarter and did not practice on Wednesday. But coach Bryron Scott said that Russell will “hopefully” return on Sunday against Maccabi Haifa at Staples Center.
