Lakers Future Draft Picks - Our '07 1st round draft pick going to Boston or Phoenix???

Questions about our future draft picks...see quote below...

"Boston will receive a Los Angeles Lakers 1st round pick. Lottery Protected in 2005, top 10 protected in 2006, top-5 protected from 2007-2010 and unprotected in 2010. Gary Payton/Chris Mihn trade. If Los Angeles finishes from 14-30 in 2006, and Boston finishes lower (worse), this pick will be conveyed to Phoenix via Atlanta as part of the Joe Johnson/Boris Diaw Trade"

What does it mean when it says protected and unprotected...Does it mean we will lose our draft picks to Boston and Phoenix in the future???

It was protected in 2005, because the Lakers were in the Lottery with Andrew Bynum. However, the Lakers were not in the top 10 last season, so Boston received their pick. I believe it changed hand perhaps twice, but that trade is done. The first round pick used to select Jordan Farmar at #26 was the Miami Heat #1, which was part of the Shaq trade. The Lakers own their own pick in 2007, but it will probably be around #25 overall.

so what does it mean when it says "top-5 protected from 2007-2010 and unprotected in 2010"

The bottom line is that debt is already paid, so the Lakers situation will be similar to last draft. They drafted Jordan Farmar at #26 last Summer. The 2007 pick should be in the same range. The Lakers have their own second round pick along with the Bobcats second round pick. The Bobcats pick looks like a low thrities pick, so the Lakers might have #25, #33, and #55. The Lakers have recently drafted Walton and Turiaf in the thirties, so it's possible to get a decent role player in that range.

It's supposed to be a pretty deep draft, so someone decent might fall to the Lakers' pick. The last draft wasn't supposed to be as deep, but the Lakers still managed to land Jordan Farmar. I hope the second round pick can be used on a quality European prospect, who can remain in Europe for a while. There are some very good players, who can't move due to buyout situations. The Lakers are currently a fairly deep team, so adding one player with their first round pick would likely be enough for the roster. The second round picks can be used for player development. Of course these picks can also be used in trades.
