Blowing Out the Nets?!!... The Nets pose many questions for your defense. But it’s that Nets defense that is the biggest question mark of their game.

Both teams had guys sidelined. For the Nets, there was no Harden. For the Lakers, no LeBron, AD, Kuzma, Gasol and Matthews. So the Lakers would lean on their newcomers and role players.

Hitting threes and getting scores from the post, the Lakers forced a timeout up 18-7 early. Dennis Schröder abused the Nets switches using speed and hitting threes for an efficient first quarter as the Lakers took an early 33-25 lead.

The Nets would go on a run after a flagrant foul on the offensive end by Kieff. They’d take the lead, but the Lakers would hang tight and lead 61-58 at the half.

Schröder and Kyrie Irving would get into it and both would get tossed. With THT now running the offense and KCP hitting threes, the Lakers went on a run to push the lead to 17 and force a timeout.

With KD’s minutes limited and now no Kyrie, the Nets lost their firepower and their defense was torn apart. Once Ben McLemore got on fire from the perimeter, they broke the Nets backs.

The Lakers had contributions from everyone tonight, but 22-11 from Drummond and 17 from McLemore made this one especially enjoyable. They cruised to the 126-101 road win. They needed to steal one of these tougher games and they pulled that off tonight.

Schröder -- -- Locked in early, he was methodical. The Nets would switch, he’d get the ball back and attack. If they gave him space, he’d take and hit threes (3-4). His passing was also clean, breaking down defenders and making the easy pass to finishers. He’d have 19 points on 7-10 shooting and 4 assists with no turnovers in the half. That first step on the mismatches was death. He also drew a charge to get a stop, but that one pained him as he hit his tailbone. He was hobbling around after that, but still effective. He was a team-high +15 in that half. He and AC had the Kyrie assignment, and Dennis got into it with Kyrie early in the second half. Kyrie was tossed, then moments later so was Schröder. The Lakers were up 4 at the time. The question would be whether we had enough in AC and THT to run the offense without Schröder and that first half +15. Of if the Nets didn’t have enough firepower to make up for their poor D. Either way, the Lakers dominated after that exchange. Dennis said he didn’t realize he got a double check. So he said “Bye” and apparently waved when Kyrie got ejected. So the refs said Dennis was going to. Despite not playing most of the second half, Dennis said this was his favorite win of the year. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 7-11 shooting (3-4 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 4 assists and no fouls in 20 minutes. He was a +16.

Drummond -- -- The numbers -- 20 and 11 in just 22 minutes. He and Bob McAdoo are the only Laker players to get 20+ and 10+ in 22 minutes or less. That’s getting it done. He was overpowering Aldridge from the start. That made some of the offense pretty simple. Give him the ball to go to work and he could get you some points. The Nets have a lot of firepower, but their interior defense is a problem against teams that can expose that. It’s not just post ups, either. Our guards were able to draw defenders and set up Drummond. THT and Schröder found him. KCP ran a two-man sequence and lobbed it up for him. He just went to work and the team put up big numbers. (Keeping an eye on the three shooting with him in the mix now, the Lakers were hot again… he does draw attention at times). Defensively, he’s getting down in his stance well and rotating a little better. It still looks like the timing on rotations and shotblocks isn’t quite there yet. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 8-15 shooting (4-6 from the line) to go with 11 boards (4 offensive), 1 steal, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a +18.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Three times in the first half, Vogel drew up ATOs to get KCP a shot. KCP came up empty on all three possessions. A clear focus by Vogel to jumpstart KCP’s offense. In the second half, we ran an ATO out of a timeout and KCP hit the three on a great look on the weakside wing. That was the best play of those ATOs. He’d get going, start scoring and now the Lakers were trouble. That took some focus by the coaching staff, but glad to see KCP get it rolling again so he can build that confidence up. Once the team got the D locked in, he was also able to get out on the break. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-10 shooting (4-6 from three) to go with 3 boards, 5 assists, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a +7.

Morris -- -- Hard to understate how important he has been for the Lakers lately. He gives us that floor spacing four that allows guys like Drummond and Schröder space to go to work. Defensively, we were so thin at the PF that having him give us 30 quality minutes was huge. When he’s not hitting those threes, we get him the ball in that midrange where he can knock down those turnarounds. Those look money any time he’s got a small on him. He’d pick up a flagrant-1 when he’d clip Kyrie in the face with an elbow on one of those iso’s. Rough night for Kyrie. The three shooting from the starters tonight: 11-18. That’s getting it done. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 6-8 shooting (2-3 from three) to go with 6 boards, 2 assists, 3 steals, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +20.

Horton-Tucker -- -- Career high in assists. With Wes also sidelined, we slid THT into the starting lineup. Really good experience for him to get some reps against the Nets team and find a little comfort. They were going under the screen and THT would hit a couple of threes. Early in a possession, maybe not the best shot. Some of his shot selection wasn’t the greatest. He had a stretch where he would compound his errors. That’s what we want to avoid. Don’t have two or three possession in a row where you come up empty or turn the ball over. Get others involved...and I think we started to see that develop tonight. “I was just trying to make the right decision every time down the court,” he said. Two plays I loved involved THT. When McLemore had it going and the D was paying extra attention, THT faked a handoff to him and took it for an uncontested dunk. Another play out of a timeout, the D was looking for McLemore but the play was a slip screen for Trezz and THT found him on the lob. Best pass of the night from him was a bullet feed threw defenders to Morris on the break for a dunk. Defense is looking for one thing and you change it up on them, that just broke the Nets for good tonight. He’d dish out 11 assists under control more often than not. Not a good shooting night, but the numbers (14 points, 11 assists, 3 steals) from your 20-year-old? Yeah. Defensively, he was anticipating and rotating well. Love seeing a player get steals because you rotated into the right spot and they passed it right to you. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 4-16 shooting (2-5 from three, 4-5 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 11 assists, 3 steals, 4 turnovers and 4 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a +18.

Harrell -- -- Not an easy night for him. He wasn’t able to finish around the rim like usual. I love that Vogel drew up that lob play for him late. Get your guys who are struggling some easy ones. A couple blocks by Trezz tonight as he rotated an anticipated well. Having good D from guards allows him to easily gobble up some blocks when an offensive player is trying to make a tough play. He also had a nice steal on the perimeter jumping a passing lane and taking it for a score. Early on those were big plays when we were in the heat of the battle. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-10 shooting (2-4 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a +5.

Caruso -- -- Just one assist tonight, but a good one. He found McLemore across court for a three that started his shooting to get on track. They had him mic’d up and you could hear how much talking he does on D. A lot of leadership on that end of the floor. The team had 12 steals and AC had a couple of them, including one he took for a dunk. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-3 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a +3.

McLemore -- -- He had 11 straight points early in the fourth. He’s a streaky shooter and in the second half of this one, he got hot at the right time. Just money once he got going. You could see Vogel discussing where to find some shots after he got going. And AC and THT were trying to get the ball to McLemore. AC a nice find early on a cross-court feed to the corner to help him get rolling. They’d work those handoff plays and he was stroking them. Then with the D concerned about his shot, we’d get a dunk from THT as he faked a handoff and attacked. We’d also run a slip screen lob for Trezz as both defenders went to McLemore. When LeBron and AD return, there will be more pressure on McLemore to pay attention to shot quality (for instance, in the first half, Schröder had a mismatch and wanted the return pass, but Ben chucked up a three). But I don’t think it matters much when he’s rolling. Hopefully, shot quality will be much, much better for him with our stars and he can get into a groove with more frequency. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 6-12 shooting (5-10 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a +17.

McKinnie -- -- He had to run as our small ball PF with the thin front court we had. That meant matching up with guys like Griffin and KD. Just a very scrappy job. The Lakers depth at PF is a problem at the moment. With no AD, LeBron, Kuzma and even Gasol who could slide Trezz down to PF, they needed some minutes from someone besides Morris. Really impressed with McKinnie’s effort on the glass, as well. He had some nice work there despite us being undersized. He actually played big on the glass. Most impressive game from him in a Laker jersey as a result. He got his first couple of scores on putbacks, one muscling his man, the other snatching a board from behind him and scoring. Late in the game, he knocked down a couple of threes. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-6 shooting (2-4 from three, 0-2 from the line) to go with 9 boards (3 offensive), 4 assists, 1 steal and 4 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a +17.

Cacok -- -- I wouldn’t have predicted us being on this end of the garbage time run where we call a timeout to bring the deep bench in because we’re blowing out the Nets. Cacok got a block in his time out there. The Stats: He didn’t shoot or score, had 1 board, 1 block and 1 foul in 3 minutes. He was a +2.

Antetokounmpo -- -- He powered in an And-1 layup in garbage time. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-2 shooting (1-1 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist and no fouls in 3 minutes. He was a +2.

Vogel -- -- Key Moment: Schröder gets tossed. Vogel brought AC in to replace him and the team never looked back. Drummond said he pulled the guys together after that ejection and told them to lock in. The game was in the balance right then and the Lakers responded. With Kyrie out, the Laker D just put on the clamps in the third, holding the Nets to 19 points (and just 43 points in the second half). The offense went into flamethrower mode from the perimeter. They outscored the Nets 60-39 after the ejection.

Key Substitution: McLemore dropping 17 off the bench with 5-10 three shooting. He had 14 of those in the fourth. “All I kept hearing was keep shooting, keep shooting,” Ben said of his new team. Got to love when your new coach has confidence in you.

Key Stats: The Nets average over 14 threes a game and made just 5-27 tonight. Compare that to the Lakers 19-34 shooting from three. That’s the game. The Nets didn’t have Harden. They didn’t have Kyrie for half a game, and KD was on limited minutes, playing just 24. But they still have some shooters and the Lakers just dialed in the D even more when the playmaking was missing from the equation.

Terrific summary DB

An extremely nice surprise of a game. Was happy with the effort and execution on both ends. Only 15 turnovers.

Dre was impressive. Interestingly, he is now 3-0 v Nets this year. I am really looking forward to seeing him and AD defensively together.

Except for jawing with Kyrie, DS was a savvy vet tonight. LBJ-like in hunting for the mismatch.

McLemore - loved it when he got going. Great to see that sort of player come alive. He also was solid on D.

THT - rough game shooting (another missed dunk lol), but was setting up guys and playing solid D

8 lakers 10+ points

Just need to keep focused v Knicks. Lakers wont shoot 56% from 3 that game, so just need to play solid D and keep turnovers on the low end again.

That Nets frontcourt was shook by Drummond

LMA and Griffin have been solid for them as of late, but they looked like little children against us lol

And that was only AD2, they haven't seen the main event yet, The Brow.

This is the fifth game in a row where DeAndre Jordan received a DNP-CD stat line. He really could've helped them tonight because we kept attacking the paint with him out. Dennis in particular got in there over and over again (which may have been what upset Kyrie).

Funny how they built the team for D’Antoni ball and then only hired him as an assistant.

The Lakers are going to absolutely destroy the Nets inside in a series. Destroy them.
The question will be how much our boys can do on defense to slow them down. Really could be some interesting looking lineups.

But the Lakers will beat the Nets up physically, I think.. wear them down.. keep throwing perimeter defensive demons at them... Caruso, Schroeder, KCP, Mathews, Kuz...

Could be a lot of fun.

And I didn't even mention THT! Not sure what role he has in a finals right now... I don't trust his 3 quite enough.. but he'll get there.

This was McKinnie's best game!

If McLemore and Drummond can continue playing like they did tonight, after Lebron & LeBrow get back, I like the Lakers chance at repeating...!

Nash is dantoni. They just want to spread you out and come at you in waves. Works in reg season but good coaching can adjust I’m giving them BOTD but I think phillly bucks heat will all push them physically

I like the match up in favor of the Lakers as well. Tonight's results are definitely encouraging. I'm still worried though as they have so much firepower. A couple of early fouls on say AD could result in a snowball situation especially if their 3 ball is falling and ours is not.

Well that was fun and very unexpected. We’re starting to figure out how to play without our stars. Drummond is a big part of it, his presence on both ends of the floor really make a difference.

Thanks DB! I've had to miss a few games, busy schedule, so it's great to see your in depth analysis of what happened. Appreciate it!

In this game, I fell asleep somewhere in the 2nd when DS was coming back in the game after his hip pointer injury and still scrapping.

This is like the 2nd game in a row where every player has made contributions. All the injuries could be a blessing in disguise. Developing the bench, giving them confidence, and then when Bron and AD get back they will be rested and refreshed.

Finally a game like this!
Been a while.

We looked so good on both ends.

Really like the way Drummond played. Curious whether he can do that with Bron and AD as well, but he was getting a lot of touches on the move or in face up situations and did very well.

Schroder is more effective when he goes into SG mode than he is trying to be a PG. Liked his aggression to shoot the ball.

THT is a talent, we all knew that. However when he has games like this, we see why we see a mini Lebron in him.

Morris has been so steady for a vet min signing. All through this injury process of not having AD and Bron, felt Morris has been a rock. Very solid at playing the “4” role in the traditional sense but then also can space the floor.

McLemore immediately showing why we signed him.

I can’t wait to see this group with a healthy AD and Bron, but will we have time left in the season to go on a run?

Thanks DB!

Turnovers and three pointers dictate how the game is going to go for the Lakers this season.

Low turnovers and a high number of three's = wins.

High turnovers and / or a low number of three's = loss.

I really like THT running the point. Gave me hope in case DS decides to walk this summer. Made some mistakes but he has potential.

Dre is effective but not dominant in the post offensively. More of a pick and roll than a clear out then let me do my thing kind of guy. He and LBJ on the pick and roll could be a major weapon.

Really liked how LBJ and AD were coaching the guys from the sidelines. Gave guys some confidence and let some players hear a different voice than a coach.

Very enjoyable game to watch.
