This wasn't who I expected... I could see him more as Mike McCarthy though.

Kevin James to play Sean Payton in movie based on 2012 Bountygate suspension

Nine years ago, a gross miscarriage of NFL justice carried Saints coach Sean Payton out of the NFL for a year. During that year, he helped coach his son’s youth football team.

And there’s a show, that’s a show. Or at least a movie. From Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions, Home Team stars Kevin James as Payton, via Peter King of Football Morning in America.

King writes that Payton recently read the script and made some corrections. Filming starts later this year; the movie will land on Netflix.

James starred in the long-running CBS sitcom The King of Queens along with multiple films, including the Paul Blart: Mall Cop franchise. Which is fitting, because it was mall-cop level investigation and decision-making that resulted in such stringent penalties being imposed against the Saints for a cultural phenomenon that happened in most if not all NFL locker rooms until the league office decided to make an example out of one team — and to ignore everywhere else that it was happening.

Sean Payton's Kevin James-led Netflix movie has a release date

Mark your calendars: “Home Team,” the upcoming Netflix film from Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions company featuring the comedian Kevin James as New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton will be released on Jan. 28, 2022.

Christopher Titone, the film’s writer and Sandler’s brother-in-law (and boyfriend of Payton’s daughter, Meghan) shared the news on Twitter with a new plot synopsis from the Los Angeles Times:

“When Super Bowl-winning coach Sean Payton gets suspended, he returns to his hometown to coach his son’s Pop Warner team. Kevin James, Taylor Lautner and Rob Schneider star. Directed by Charles Kinnane and Daniel Kinnane. Written by Christopher Titone & Keith Blum.”

Reactions to James being cast as Payton earlier this year were, well, mixed to say the least. Sandler’s frequent collaborator doesn’t exactly share a resemblance to the Saints head coach, but we’ll suspend our disbelief for a bit if it’s a good story. If nothing else Payton’s cameo should be funny.

He is probably the closest of Sandlers friends. I cannot see Chris Rock or David Spade playing Payton.

Sean Payton just became really tan during that suspension

However I know why Adam chose him but its still an interesting casting choice as they don't look alike.

I mean Omar Epps playing Mike Tomlin would be a slam dunk of a casting choice this not so much..
