The Return of AD... After missing the last couple months of basketball, Anthony Davis made his return to the court.

He played just one half as they eased him back in from the injury. His shot was off and didn’t make much of an impact, but getting him back on the floor after the injury is great to see.

“I didn’t think about it one time tonight,” Davis said of the injury as he hit the floor.

He was a -11 and that’s how much the Lakers trailed at halftime.

To start the second half, the Lakers rattled off an 11-0 run to tie the game up. Then, they’d give it right back allowing the Mavs a 10-0 run of their own. That only forced the Lakers to answer with another run. Dennis Schröder would score 10 straight during a Laker 15-4 run to regain the lead.

The Lakers back court was scorching in the third quarter and Dennis and KCP were a one-two punch. Once Schröder sat, they’d lose some momentum.

Despite 29 from KCP and 25 from Schröder, both would be in on some key miscues in the final few minutes on the offensive end. KCP missed a finish on the break, that resulted in a layup the other way and a 4-point switch to trail by 9. They had chances to get the lead down to just a bucket, but would turn the ball over, get blocked or miss a layup.

Tough finish for the Lakers and they’d fall 115-110. The number of Lakers in foul trouble in this game was something we don’t usually see. Hopefully, they can get AD integrated and take the next one.

Davis -- -- I finally don’t need to delete his name from my template. AD is back. He was supposed to be limited to just 15 minutes in the first half. He went slightly longer. “I felt good out there,” he said. I’m not sure if he had his confidence back yet and was just feeling things out, but he struggled a bit. During the time out there, the one question we wanted to see was how would the combined size of our two ADs would look together? They imposed their size early on the offensive glass, overpowering the Mavs early. We need more dribble penetration to really see their impact in that regard. Defensively, we saw the Drummond get down low on a switch to challenge the ballhandler and that resulted in a kickout that Davis stole. That length in the passing lanes will be a key. Anchor wise, I think the two did a fairly poor job. Davis did have a block on KP’s jumper and forced an airball by Luka pressuring him. He said they’ve had one practice together. Offensively, Davis was off the mark with his shot, missing his first five attempts before finally hitting a jumper. He’d get another score on a post-up spin for his only points in 10 attempts. Mixed results dealing with the double teams in the post (one pass led to a McLemore three, another straight out of bounds). Later in the second quarter, AD played opposite Trezz. Nothing much to report there. The pace is going to pick up with AD grabbing boards or getting steals and pushing out on occasion, but we need LeBron out there to see if he can make it all come together. Davis broke a sweat tonight, hit the floor a few times, showed a little explosiveness. He wasn’t terribly effective impact-wise yet. Can’t wait until he dials it in. “It was just fun to be out there again. Long time coming,” AD said. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-10 shooting (0-1 from three, 0-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and no fouls in 17 minutes. He was a -13.

Schröder -- -- Strong second half as he went on a one-man run in the third to score 10 straight and bring the team back after vocally encouraging them to get going. Great stretch of ball. He and KCP in that third were balling at a high level. Hope they can continue to do that around LeBron and AD. He struggled a bit down the stretch and was in on some key miscues (getting blocked on a jumper, turning the ball over and missing a layup). Tough breaks after a great game prior to that. He would foul out with 18 seconds left. Defensively, he had the Luka assignment quite a bit. Luka would take KCP on the other end. Occasionally, they’d get into a cross match and Dennis would attack that (he had an easy layup in the second half that forced a timeout). There wasn’t a lot of that early on as the Lakers were getting whistled for a lot of fouls, which allowed the Mavs to set their D. Some excellent passing, especially on those two-man sequences that have really improved with all the reps. He’d finish with big numbers. The Stats: He scored 25 points on 9-13 shooting (2-3 from three, 5-6 from the line) to go with 2 boards (both offensive), 13 assists, 4 turnovers and 6 foul sin 38 minutes. He was a +3.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Huge scoring night, but let’s quickly run through the D first. We put him on KP defensively to start this game with our other two bigs hanging back instead of getting pulled out on the perimeter. Interesting matchup when they did that. I think there was really only one post up attempt by Porzingis in that matchup. (The Lakers didn’t lockdown in this game, giving up 94 points after three quarters. Porzingis would leave the game later in the second half with an injury.) Offensively, KCP had 11 points in the first half, then dropped 12 points in the third quarter, sinking a three threes, a layup in transition and a tech. He’d knock down 6 threes being aggressive. Late in the game, he couldn’t finish a dunk and it resulted in a 4-point switch with 4 to go. That was a tough miss. From the perimeter, it felt like most of his misses were off balance shots where you could see his legs trying to correct the balance in mid jump. Love seeing the big numbers from KCP. Keep it up. The Stats: He scored 29 points on 9-17 shooting (6-12 from three, 5-5 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 steal and 2 foul sin 34 minutes. He was a -5.

Drummond -- -- He looked motivated to hit the boards tonight with Davis out there. He’d finish with 19, including 6 offensive boards. The first one he pulled down led to a KCP three. Should be fascinating to see the Lakers impose their size on the glass with the return of big lineups that teams have to match up with. Defensively, some better moments challenging shots at the rim. I’m going to be really interested to see the length and speed from our bigs as we switch. He said he felt like a kid again on Team USA with Davis. Wish some of the lob finishes were under more control. He had one tonight, but missed a couple others. He was hosed on a few calls tonight. One was an obvious And-1. Another looked like certain FTs but they called it non-shooting. It only took a few of those calls to make a difference in this one as close as it was. We were much better with him on the floor tonight. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-10 shooting (4-4 from the line) to go with 19 boards (6 offensive), 3 assists, 1 steal, 3 blocks, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +14.

Kuzma -- -- He picked up his fifth foul midway through the third quarter and had to sit. That limited his minutes. He had some scoring early on, hitting a baseline jumper, a layup in transition off a made basket and a stepback jumper in the corner early on. Really impressed with the passing tonight. He saw lobs, he’d fake a handoff and hit KCP for a corner three. Feels like he is manipulating the D now to get what he wants with the pass. That’s some good growth there and winning ball around superstars. Keep it up. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-10 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 6 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 5 foul sin 31 minutes. He was a +12.

Harrell -- -- Not a great combo with THT out there defensively. Our guards were making it too easy to get to the rim and Trezz isn’t going to make a big impact deterring that. What is interesting is that we saw Trezz/AD combo out there for a stretch. I’m curious if that’s something they are looking at to keep some length on the floor and shore that problem up. Trezz had 8 points on 4-5 shooting in the first half. He and Schröder worked that two-man game for a dunk and a layup. Trezz also had a putback crashing the glass. AC also found him in transition for a score. He’d get some finishes around the rim in the second half and not a lot of love from the refs at times, as well He’d also get into foul trouble. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 7-8 shooting to go with 6 boards, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 5 fouls in 17 minutes. He was a -19.

Caruso -- -- Feisty game, especially late when he was causing Luka to turn the ball over or stole and inbounds pass. We had little business remaining in the game, but he kind of kept us in it coming up with multiple big plays down the stretch. Offensively, he’d sink a three and also scoop a layup in around WCS. Really looking forward to when Lebron gets back so AC and THT don’t have to be primary ball handlers/playmakers as much. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-6 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block and 1 foul in 28 minutes. He was a +4.

Horton-Tucker -- -- Not a good game defensively as Luka hunted him on switches. With Trezz backing him up, the Lakers were giving up some easy buckets. Meanwhile, offensively, THT struggled to get to the rim and when he was there, bigs were often waiting. The 12 minutes he was in the game was really where we lost this one. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-5 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 12 minutes. He was a -17.

Morris -- -- He got the start in the second half in place of Davis, but never really made an impact. That three ball was just not dropping. So many wide open looks and he couldn’t knock them down. Just hit a couple and who knows what happens in this one. The refs really found some ways to keep us at arms length in this one. One of those was an obvious foul on Morris as he attacked baseline and got pushed. Little non calls like that added up. The Stats: He scored4 points on 2-8 shooting (0-5 from three) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 22 minutes. He was a +5.

McLemore -- : -- Noting that Wes didn’t see any time in this one. He’d sink a three in this one and foul too much. That’s pretty much his game in a nutshell. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-3 shooting from three to go with 1 board, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 10 minutes. He was a -10.

Vogel -- -- Key Moment: Just some of the miscues down the stretch. The Lakers pushed out the break off a steal by AC and KCP missed a dunk attempt to cut it to 5, then Luka scored an uncontested layup the other way to push it to 9 instead with 4 minutes left. We called a timeout after that and Schröder lost the handle for a turnover out of that. They would trim it down to 4 with a chance to cut it to 2 or 1 with a couple minutes left, but Schröder would get blocked on a jumper and we’d give up a wide open three on the other end. Lakers down 7. Again, Schröder could have cut it to 3, but missed a layup with 36 seconds left that he knew he should have had.

Key Substitution: THT in this game was just not good. He was a -17 in 12 minutes. Defensively, picked on. Offensively, no impact.

Key Stats: The Mavs had a 36-17 advantage on freethrows.

Thanks DB

I liked how ADx2 looked to start the game...felt we saw the type of issues that could cause opponents. Once mavs sped things up it seemed (as ecpected) AD was just a step slow.

Once AD is back to normal timing and speed Im telling you he and dre are gonna scare the 💩 out of opponents

Kuzma deserved a middle finger emoji. He can not have games where he is completely invisible out there, and he does this way too many times for my liking.

JJ Redick killed us in his limited minutes, he looked like white chocolate out there with his fancy passing, cannot afford performances like this from opposing third stringers

I feel like we are now at a tipping point where we need to get the full compliment of guys together. we will still have some growing pains (1 or 2 games) but lets start to lock in.

Thank you for putting these together DB.

Remember when we used to read post game articles from local rags written by English majors who didn't (&still don't) know crap about the game? (Plaske, Ding...etc)

Thoughts and ratings is the only post game material I look at now.

Overall, we were competitive with a limited, rusty AD. Now the countdown begins before Bron gets back. The re-integration and chemistry needs to progress "like clockwork" as there is only about three weeks left in the regular season.

I will say we got to give some credit to JJ, too. I didn't recognize some of what he did out there as actually being part of his game.

DB:

That officiating seem extra dubious to you? 28 fouls called on lakers v 15 on the mavs. Its not like the mavs werent bodying up either...they suddenly became experts on playing foul-less d?

Was just curious about that disparity in last nights games. Only other eye popping one was celtics. 23 fouls on suns v 12 on celtics.

That crap drives me up the wall. Our guys didnt stop knowing how to play defense without fouling. Plus watching the non calls vs the mavs, eg when powell pushed kieff out of bounds forcing a turnover. Whistle held- powell was laughing at the non call. Then luka jumping into ds to get 3 foul shots - it was so pathetic a call that even tnt announcers laughed and were like who is fouling who?

And dont get me started on lukas ridiculous use of his off arm when he dribbles to create space. Its an offensive foul half yhe time but refs dont call it. Hes not very good at “hiding” that push like many vets yet he gets away with it.

It was inconsistent last night. I think there's been a handful of games where it stuck out this season (maybe less) and last night was one.

Kind of funny Vogel burned that coach's challenge with a few seconds left on an intentional foul. Not sure if that was totally strategy related or him just messing with them.
